- New partnership will see MindRight's mental health and wellness program available to athletes through HeadCheck's software platform

Kelowna, BC - MindRight for Athletes Society ('MindRight') and HeadCheck Health ("HeadCheck") today announced a new partnership to advance athlete health and wellness by making MindRight's resources and peer-to-peer support available through HeadCheck's mobile app and web-based software platform.

"I believe we have helpful resources available for youth and need to support them to get help if they need it," said Myles Mattila, Project Developer and Spokesperson for MindRight.

Myles Mattila, currently a junior hockey player with the Kelowna Chiefs and business student at Okanagan College, developed MindRight after being inspired by the story of late Vancouver Canuck Rick Rypien. Myles thought of a friend who struggled with his mental health and developed MindRight to educate athletes, coaches, parents, and supporters about their mental health and the health of others. MindRight aims to provide information about available local resources, and help players make connections with the services they might need. MindRight will work within the community to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.

"Myles continues to do an incredible job in raising mental health awareness in a way that resonates with young athletes," said Harrison Brown, CEO of HeadCheck Health. "We're happy to provide our platform to support his initiative and make more resources available to athletes and their support network."

The three-day CAMP forum on sustainable mountain development in Central Asia took place on October 4-6, 2012, in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Titled ‘Sustainable Land Management –up-scaling benefits for rural communities’, the forum facilitated knowledge exchange and experience sharing among different stakeholders working at various levels, from local to national, and to the global.

Participants from Central Asia, France, Germany, England, Mongolia, Afghanistan, Russia and the Caucasus discussed an integrated approach on sustainable land management, focusing on land-reforms, improvement in decision-support tools and need in synergies for current regulatory framework on land use and management to be aligned with the internationally accepted good practices.

The Forum was organized by CAMP Kuhiston, Mountain Partnership member from Tajikistan. The multi-stakeholder organizing committee for the event included the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Committee on Women and Family Affairs under the Government of Tajikistan, University of Central Asia (UCA), Centre for Development and the Environment, University of Bern / Research Center of North-South cooperation, German Agro Action, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, FAO, CARITAS, UNDP, the Mountain Partnership and Oxfam in Tajikistan.

During the Forum Mountain Partnership Central Asia Hub (MPCA) facilitated a two-hour strategic planning session with 20 of its member institutions from the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Dagestan and Altai Republic of Russia, and MSRC. Since 2008, the number of MP members from Central Asia has doubled. As MPCA continues its process of institutional development and decentralization, two activities were conducted: 1) A joint review of tools and instruments to assess member contributions, with the goal of enriching regional and local platforms serving mountain communities and facilitating joint initiatives; and 2) An inventory of member needs and demands, which was last done in 2008, was updated, to better enable the Hub and its members to mutually address them.

This is an especially auspicious moment for the friendship between New Zealand and the United States. This week, our friends in New Zealand will join us for a celebration of the 239th American Independence Day. On this day, we reflect on the universal values of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness enshrined by our Founding Father Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence. It will be a privilege to mark this important day for America in New Zealand, with whom we have such a strong connection.

The NZUS Council will also host the sixth U.S. – New Zealand Partnership Forum this week. The biennial Partnership Forums, held alternately in the United States and in New Zealand, have contributed significantly to the very positive current state of our relationship. The U.S. Embassy is proud to support the forum along with Government of New Zealand.

As in the past, the forum will convene high-level U.S. and New Zealand delegations from a number of sectors to discuss the current state and future of our relationship, and how we can best work together bilaterally and regionally to promote mutual peace, security, and prosperity. The forum will bring together senior government officials, academia, business, youth representatives, and non-governmental organizations from New Zealand and the United States to discuss increasing areas for cooperation, such as on climate change, which Secretary of State John Kerry called the defining challenge of our generation. They will also discuss emerging opportunities in a region with impressive growth. This year, the forum will focus on “Pacific Partners – the next generation,” and will combine current and emerging leaders in their fields.

The Ambassador of the United States to New Zealand and Samoa, Mark Gilbert, said, “The Partnership Forum is a great opportunity to build on our longstanding friendship and discuss how we can work together in the future on a range of issues important to us all.” In a press release, Foreign Minister Murray McCully welcomed the start of the US/NZ Partnership: “The U.S. is one of New Zealand’s most important partners and events like this reinforce the strong links between our two nations.” beehive.govt.nz/release/usnz-partnership-forum-opens

Also participating in the forum will be the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific Danny Russel; Simon Power, Chair of the NZ-US Council; Stuart van Scoyoc, President of the US-NZ Council; Andrea Smith, Deputy Secretary for the Asian and Americas Group, New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade; and Ernest Bower, Senior Advisor and Sumitro Chair for Southeast Asia Studies and Co-director of the Pacific Partners Initiative, Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Altadena Works is a creative partnership based in California that emerged from a shared desire to produce quality goods manufactured within the USA. The products are rooted in simple and straightforward design, constructed meticulously with functionality and longevity in mind. Understated yet luxurious in their material quality, the bags deliver a solution both modern and practical for everyday use.

The backpacks are designed with the attitude that a bag should be an extension of what you’re wearing, with minimal design and slimmer profile referencing the simplicity of 1970’s outdoor equipment. Everything about the bags has been considered, from unique color schemes to user-friendly pocket placement and zipper pulls. All bags are made in the USA using the highest quality materials, including heavyweight canvas duck, military spec nylon webbing and hardware, and leather custom ordered from Horween, one of America’s oldest tanneries. Construction is fundamental – Altadena Works products are made by seasoned American artisans who’ve worked in bag production for over 30 years.

Taking the utmost care through every stage of production, they ensure the bags meet their own high standards as well as ours.

Their products are built to last, and provide functionality in every context, whether you are hiking, traveling, or on your daily commute.
