Representatives of the Wiesbaden military community and their counterparts from the garrison’s partner unit, the Landeskommando Hessen, look at the remaining bridgeheads of the famous Remagen Bridge during a staff ride March 19. The bridge built during World War I to facilitate German troop movement into France survived several bombing raids during World War II and was the last remaining bridge across the Rhine River when U.S. troops approached in early 1945. As the group learned during the tour, the small German contingent left to defend the bridge was unable to destroy it before U.S. 2nd Lt. Karl Timmermann led his unit across on March 7, 1945, followed by 8,000 Soldiers within the next 24 hours, thus speeding up the end of the war. The bridge eventually collapsed 10 days later. -- Photos by Anemone Rueger, U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs Office.

As part of our advocacy programme we enjoyed a day showing and sharing Wild Ennerdale with partnership staff from across the country.

This is an especially auspicious moment for the friendship between New Zealand and the United States. This week, our friends in New Zealand will join us for a celebration of the 239th American Independence Day. On this day, we reflect on the universal values of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness enshrined by our Founding Father Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence. It will be a privilege to mark this important day for America in New Zealand, with whom we have such a strong connection.

The NZUS Council will also host the sixth U.S. – New Zealand Partnership Forum this week. The biennial Partnership Forums, held alternately in the United States and in New Zealand, have contributed significantly to the very positive current state of our relationship. The U.S. Embassy is proud to support the forum along with Government of New Zealand.

As in the past, the forum will convene high-level U.S. and New Zealand delegations from a number of sectors to discuss the current state and future of our relationship, and how we can best work together bilaterally and regionally to promote mutual peace, security, and prosperity. The forum will bring together senior government officials, academia, business, youth representatives, and non-governmental organizations from New Zealand and the United States to discuss increasing areas for cooperation, such as on climate change, which Secretary of State John Kerry called the defining challenge of our generation. They will also discuss emerging opportunities in a region with impressive growth. This year, the forum will focus on “Pacific Partners – the next generation,” and will combine current and emerging leaders in their fields.

The Ambassador of the United States to New Zealand and Samoa, Mark Gilbert, said, “The Partnership Forum is a great opportunity to build on our longstanding friendship and discuss how we can work together in the future on a range of issues important to us all.” In a press release, Foreign Minister Murray McCully welcomed the start of the US/NZ Partnership: “The U.S. is one of New Zealand’s most important partners and events like this reinforce the strong links between our two nations.” beehive.govt.nz/release/usnz-partnership-forum-opens

Also participating in the forum will be the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific Danny Russel; Simon Power, Chair of the NZ-US Council; Stuart van Scoyoc, President of the US-NZ Council; Andrea Smith, Deputy Secretary for the Asian and Americas Group, New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade; and Ernest Bower, Senior Advisor and Sumitro Chair for Southeast Asia Studies and Co-director of the Pacific Partners Initiative, Center for Strategic and International Studies.

The NYC Department of Transportation's Urban Art Program partnered with artist Will Ryman and the Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership Business Improvement District to install the sculpture, Bird at Flatiron Plaza in Manhattan. The 12-foot tall, 12-foot wide and 14-foot long sculpture is fabricated from fifty-five hundred found and manufactured nails. The work weighs five tons and rests upon a nest of ninety-thousand nails. Edgar Allan Poe's, "The Raven" inspired the form of the sculpture. Ryman has always been drawn to oversized figures that alter interior spaces and landscapes. He recently exhibited larger-than-life roses on the Park Avenue Malls during the winter of 2010 in partnership with the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation.

A native New Yorker, Ryman has exhibited domestically and internationally. Writer-turned-artist, Ryman is heavily influenced by the works of absurdist playwrights and philosophers. He is represented by Paul Kasmin Gallery.

Beauty Dungdung hails from Karanga Suri village, Kersai block, Simdega district, Jharkhand. One of the specialities of this district is that it is called the 'cradle of hockey', as it is the most popular game here, and this district continues to contribute illustrious hockey players to the Indian national team. It is also because of the Astroturf hockey stadium at Simdega, the district capital. Beauty DungDung is a part of the Indian junior women's hockey team which won a gold medal in the four-nation hockey tournament in Israel and won a test match against Belarus. She is the youngest child in a family that earns its living through farming. Since February 2016, Pratham's English team supports the Junior women's hockey team to learn English, and Beauty is one of them! In this photo with her teammates at the astroturf stadium, she is the one standing extreme right. The English program has helped these girls in the following ways:

1. Communication with other team members when they play outside their state or country where the medium of conversation and interaction is in English

2. Reading sign-boards, names of railway stations, and instruction boards at the airport which are in English.

3. Reading the instructions on sports medicine.

4. Browsing the internet to watch videos and read articles about Hockey.

5.Interaction with players from other countries.

In the summer of 2016, the BLM Burns District continued its partnership with the University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History and the Oregon Archaeological Society and conducted archaeological excavations at the Rimrock Draw Rockshelter site in southeastern Oregon.

The site, discovered in 2009 by BLM Archaeologist Scott Thomas, has hosted archaeology field schools since 2011. In 2015, it became internationally known after archaeologists found a small stone tool under a layer of volcanic ash from a volcanic eruption about 15,800 years ago.

This tool suggests one of the oldest known human occupations in the western United States.

The 2016 excavations encountered significant rock and boulder debris, resulting from at least two occasions of portions of the rock wall calving or breaking off – probably around 8,000 and 10,000 years ago. These rocks limited access to the ground beneath them, and many were removed only after drilling and splitting reduced them to removeable sizes.

In coordination with the BLM’s Scott Thomas, Dr. Patrick O’Grady with the University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History directed excavations for the fifth year in 2016, and Jordan Pratt, graduate student at Texas A&M University, served as the excavation’s site supervisor. Volunteers from the Oregon Archaeological Society, students from the University of Oregon, and archaeologists from the BLM conducted the excavations.
