In those days the news spread everywhere: the Americans were liberating Italy with the help of the partisan gangs and the Nazi army was in scattered retreat. But my parents had run away before, and I didn't even know where, exactly. It was not a normal family, mine: my father was Jewish, and this was enough to justify the flight in the previous months. Now, I had no more news of them, and when I got home, I had the gun in my hand and a bad foreboding in my mind ...

I think the country and the world could use you right about now. We are being torn apart by partisan politics at home and war in Ukraine. Joe Biden needs a new backbone to make the tough decisions that need to be made before it becomes too late. Nobody likes a weak, ineffective president, especially with a lunatic ex-president running amuck and on the loose. A supreme court trying to turn back the hand of time. Taking away people's right to choose. What's next? When did we become a banana republic? Both Democrats and Republicans have become a real joke. The country is in desperate need of real leadership? and no one over the age of 65 should be allowed to run for president.

♫ Bella Ciao ♫

The song Bella Ciao is the song of the Italian resistance and partisans who fought against the fascist dictatorship of Mussolini and the occupation by Hitler's Nazi soldiers. It is the song of April 25th, the day Italy celebrates the liberation from Nazi fascism.

Who were the partisans?

The partisans were the Italian resistance against the fascist dictatorship and the Nazi occupation. Their help was crucial for the liberation of Italy by Anglo-American troops. The partisans were common people who armed themselves as best they could. They belonged to different political tendencies (communists, shareholders, monarchists, socialists, democrats, liberals, republicans, anarchists) gathered in the Committee for National Liberation (it. Comitato di Liberazione Nazionale). They hid mainly in the mountains and weakened the enemy with insurrections and sabotage, for example by damaging communication and transportation routes. Women also played an important role and were often the relay women, carrying information and messages.

Stamattina mi sono alzato,

Oh bella, ciao! Bella, ciao! Bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!

Stamattina mi sono alzato,

E ho trovato l’invasor.

Oh partigiano, portami via,

Oh bella, ciao! Bella, ciao! Bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!

Oh partigiano, portami via,

Ché mi sento di morir.

E se io muoio da partigiano,

Oh bella, ciao! Bella, ciao! Bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!

E seppellire lassù in montagna,

Oh bella, ciao! Bella, ciao! Bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!

E seppellire lassù in montagna,

Sotto l’ombra di un bel fior.

Tutte le genti che passeranno,

Oh bella, ciao! Bella, ciao! Bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!

Tutte le genti che passeranno,

Mi diranno «Che bel fior!»

«E questo è il fiore del partigiano»,

Oh bella, ciao! Bella, ciao! Bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!

«Questo è il fiore del partigiano,

Morto per la libertà!»

This morning I got up,

Oh beautiful, hello! Hello beautiful! Beautiful, bye, bye, bye!

This morning I got up,

And I found the invader.

Oh partisan, take me away,

Oh beautiful, hello! Hello beautiful! Beautiful, bye, bye, bye!

Oh partisan, take me away,

Because I feel like dying.

And if I die as a partisan,

Oh beautiful, hello! Hello beautiful! Beautiful, bye, bye, bye!

And if I die as a partisan, you have to bury me.

And bury up there in the mountains,

Oh beautiful, hello! Hello beautiful! Beautiful, bye, bye, bye!

And bury up there in the mountains,

Under the shade of a beautiful flower.

All the people who will pass,

Oh beautiful, hello! Hello beautiful! Beautiful, bye, bye, bye!

All the people who will pass,

They will say to me «What a beautiful flower!»

«And this is the flower of the partisan»,

Oh beautiful, hello! Hello beautiful! Beautiful, bye, bye, bye!

"This is the flower of the partisan,

Died for freedom!"

And one of the most evocative symbols of the partisan struggle is the red poppy: its color evokes the blood shed during the war, while its flowering on the battlefields represents rebirth and hope.

The 25th of April 1945 the Committee of the Italian Resistance gave the order of general insurrection. The partisans had fought the Fascists and the Nazis since the end of September 1943. The Resistance started in Naples that was the first major European city to be liberated after 4 days of fighting against the retreating German Army (27-30 September 1943). The 25th of April 1945 the partisans entered in the northern Italian cities. Since then the poppy has always been the symbol of the Resistance.

Around 45.000 partisans died to free Italy fighting the Fascists and the Nazis. Most of the Italian soldiers refused to fight with the Nazis after the armistice of the 8th September 1943. Around 800.000 of them were deported to Germany were ten of thousands of them died.

Boško Buha (1926 – 27 September 1943) was a young Yugoslav Partisan and an honored icon of the Yugoslavian resistance during World War II.

On 10 June, 1944 a German Waffen-SS company led by Adolf Diekmann sealed off Oradour-sur-Glane and ordered everyone within to assemble in the village square to have their identity papers examined. The women and children were locked in the church and the men were led to six barns and sheds, where machine guns were already in place. The village was then looted.

According to a survivor's account, the SS men then began shooting, aiming for their legs. When victims were unable to move, the SS men covered them with fuel and set the barns on fire. Only six men managed to escape. One of them was later seen walking down a road and was shot dead. In all, 190 Frenchmen died.

The SS men next proceeded to the church and placed an incendiary device beside it. When it was ignited, women and children tried to escape through the doors and windows, only to be met with machine-gun fire. 247 women and 205 children died in the attack. The only survivor was 47-year-old Marguerite Rouffanche. She escaped through a rear sacristy window, followed by a young woman and child. All three were shot, two of them fatally. Rouffanche crawled to some pea bushes and remained hidden overnight until she was found and rescued the next morning. About twenty villagers had fled Oradour-sur-Glane as soon as the SS unit had appeared. That night, the village was partially razed.

Several days later, the survivors were allowed to bury the 642 dead inhabitants of Oradour-sur-Glane who had been killed in just a few hours. Adolf Diekmann said the atrocity was in retaliation for the partisan activity in nearby Tulle and the kidnapping of an SS commander, Helmut Kämpfe.

A new village was built nearby after the war, but President Charles de Gaulle ordered the original maintained as a permanent memorial and museum.

"Bella ciao" (Italian: [ˈbɛlla ˈtʃaːo]) is an anti-Nazi and anti-fascist Italian folk song[1] dedicated to the partisans of the Italian resistance, who fought against the occupying troops of Nazi Germany and the collaborationist fascist forces during the liberation of Italy.

The exact origins are not known, but it is theorized to be based on a folk song of the late 19th century, sung by female workers (mondine) of the paddy fields in Northern Italy in protest against harsh working conditions. There is little evidence of the song being used during World War II, with the current partisan version becoming widespread only after it ended. Versions of "Bella ciao" continue to be sung worldwide as a hymn of resistance against Nazism, fascism, injustice, and oppression.

The 1963 version of Yves Montand shot to fame after the group Il Nuovo Canzoniere Italiano presented it at the 1964 Festival dei Due Mondi at Spoleto both as a song of the mondine and as a partisan hymn, and the latter so "inclusive" that it could hold together the various political souls of the national liberation struggle (Catholics, Communists, Socialists, Liberals...) and even be sung at the end of the Christian Democracy (Democrazia Cristiana) 1975 congress which elected the former partisan Zaccagnini as national secretary (from Wikipedia)

Spanish communist partisans, lining up for a demonstration. They did not like to be photographed but behaved disciplined under the watchful eye of the Guardia Civil.

Lying that is, being partisan or, to put it mildly, being economical with the truth. This is why we can't trust an image unless it has been "verified" as our news bulletins often call it. Sometimes, one and the same image can be used for two mutually exclusive "narratives". We are observing this in relation to the imagery of the war in Ukraine. Corpses of civilians in Mariupol, we are being told, are the result of Russian war crimes, or, alternatively, of the action of the snipers of the (Ukrainian) Azov Battalion with its neo-Nazi background. These things need to be "verified". Seeing and believing are two different things.

The Monument to the Kalnik Partisans is a socialist-era war memorial located in Ludbreški Ivanec, Croatia, near the Kalnik mountain range, which was a centre of Partisan resistance. It commemorates the Partisans who fought in the Kalnik region during World War II against Axis forces and their collaborators

It is one of many spomeniks, or socialist-era monuments, erected throughout the former Yugoslavia to honour fallen partisans and victims of fascism. Like many monuments of its kind, the Kalnik Partisans monument has been subjected to neglect or vandalism since the breakup of Yugoslavia.

During the socialist era of Yugoslavia, thousands of these anti-fascist memorials were built to commemorate battles and victims of WWII. They were often financed by local municipalities and organizations of former Partisan fighters. Today, these striking monuments are often viewed as relics of a bygone era, with many falling into disrepair

Once it was a renaissance building, erected on the Zagradec hill towards the end of the 15th century. With owners changing it survived till the middle of the 20th century, when it was, like so many other castles, demolished by Slovenian partisans. Only the northern tower survived. The picture shows castle's NW facade.

IMG_1740r1The Church of Saint Nicholas is a Late-Gothic and Baroque church in the Old Town of Prague. It was built between 1732-1737 on the site of a Gothic church from the 13th century which was also dedicated to Saint Nicholas.

The church was formerly used by the Czech and Slovak Orthodox Church. Since 1920 it has been the main church of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church and its Prague diocese.

During the Prague uprising in 1945, the church was used by the Czech partisans as a concealed site for Radio Prague, as the main radio building was under attack by the Waffen-SS.

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh...

Such scenes are hard to apprehend in western culture. Judeo Hellenic devotion to martyrdom is still prevalent in eastern cultures, A mother who has lost part of her flesh is torne between her grief and exuberance about her son's martyrdom, a hero who devoted his life for a "juste cause" so nicely depicted in Tolstoy's War and peace.

To me the last three years have been a downward spiral. The partisan approach to the impeachment hearing in which facts are irrelevant and the goal is to maintain the status quo regardless of its impact upon We, the People is a symptom of the federal government's present state of health.

I took this photo in Philadelphia in 2011 during very different times. It represents my present feelings towards the federal government of the United States-can it be fixed or how can we change it?

I try to keep away from politics in my Flickr posts, but sometimes it's just too damn hard to do so.

The Spomenik Database was set up in 2016 by writer, history hobbyist and travel enthusiast Donald Niebyl to act as a comprehensive online resource for the most significant and notable of the abstract & modernist World War II monuments built in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from roughly 1960 to 1990 (structures commonly referred to as 'Spomeniks'), which are now, after the breakup of that country in the 1990s, scattered across the present-day regions of Croatia, Slovenia, N. Macedonia, Serbia, Kosovo, Bosnia i Herzegovina and Montenegro.

This spomenik complex at Mostar commemorates the 810 named fallen World War II fighters from Mostar whose bodies are interred in the cemetery here; each of the fighters were members of the Partisan National Liberation Army and died fighting against the Axis Ustaše and German occupiers. Along with the 810, the bodies of hundreds of WW2 fallen Partisan fighters were interred in the staircases leading up to the top of the monument

Since the fall of Yugoslavia, as the site has fallen into disrepair, a great number of markers have been vandalized, displaced and smashed. Even engraved markers that have been recently refurbished and replaced continue to be destroyed.

Located in the center of the village of Bud, Norway, I thought this was a lovely cottage and church.

Bud is a fishing village in Hustadvika Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county in western Norway near Molde. The village is located on the Romsdal peninsula along the Atlanterhavsveien road (Atlantic Road or Atlantic Ocean Road). During the Nazi occupation, the hill above the harbor from where I took this shot had a small German outpost with bunkers and a few gun placements. There is now a small museum and the hill serves as a monument to the Norwegian resistance and the brave partisans that fought and died in WW II.

Tomorrow, May 28th, in Brussels, is the Open Day, in the European Parliament and other EU institutions. This event gives visitors opportunity to learn more about how institutions work and brings EU closer to its citizens.

I’m glad, that this picture was chosen for one of the posters, created for tomorrows Open Day. The poster is dedicated to the Climate Change. As a Green Earth supporter, I couldn’t dream about a better use for my photograph.

Macugnaga. Italy.

Alpe Meccia.

October, 22th, 1944. Teodoro Picchetti, 27 years old, Mario Lana, 24, Mario Bassi, 30, Anselmo Scomazzon, 22, Benito Andreoli, 18, Angelo Falsone, 24, Luigi Magnaghi, Bruno Magnaghi with his pregnant wife Giuseppina, all partisans of the Garibaldi brigade, are killed in this place, a small settlement facing the huge East flank of Monte Rosa, by a Nazist commando. Another young woman, whose name is not remembered, is captured, raped and beaten by the Germans, and then let free just to tell her family and friends about the ‘power’ of the Third Reich.

After the killing, the bodies of the young partisans are transported like dead goats, tied to a pole, to a common grave, by the people of the village of Macugnaga, under the menace of the heavy weapons.

The big mountain surely watched over the entire horror, maybe through the thick clouds that often hide her shining icefields from the human eyes, maybe shining in the sunshine, as in this photo; silent, impassible, as the God that the young brave fighters were probably praying.

History loves to repeat herself…

22 ottobre 1944.
