The heavy-duty shelves we bought at Lowe's begin to take shape inside the garage. Lisa has secured them to the garage side beam so they will not tip over. All shelves except the top one (which is open metal grid) are particleboard. There are reinforcements under the shelves (not visible) that spread the load. The shelves are rated to hold about 900 kg each.

(probably only useful to locals)

All for sale: Best offer:

Tuner: Pioneer SX-1300. 6 pairs of RCA input, two pairs of speaker output.

CD player: Pioneer PD-M453. 6-CD changer, uses cartridges for 6 CDs, comes with 8 empty cartridges.

Tape player: Fisher CR-W680A. Dual tapes. Oddly enough, nobody is buying these on eBay at all.

All of the above are circa 1990. They are in fine condition, never had any mechanical or electrical problems with any of them. Other than the CD cartridge I spilled root-beer inside, which is repaired and only holds 5 CDs instead of 6.

Also:

Speakers: two EPI model 100. In good condition. Apparently people buy parts for these on eBay to repair- they're supposed to be good speakers.

Shelves: Black particleboard. Fits the electronics, with two drawers below. 28" wide x 41" tall x 16" deep. A few dings/scratches, but they're structurally sound.

The filing cabinet is awesome. Tracy used it for her sewing supplies (was $7, now $4: Tracy says it's missing a top; still, very handy). The shelf is ugly laminated particleboard, but useful -- you know how it goes ($2). The space heater works ($withdrawn). Update: the space heater no longer works.

When we removed the particleboard subfloor, we could see on the original pine floor that where the double doors in the hall are, there used to be a wall and smaller door. This was probably once the back of the house, and the back hall was a porch. Maybe this is where the screen door was originally, since it used to face the other way.

A start to what may be an ongoing project. mostly just playing with different means of putting paint on particleboard. "Framed" with charred 1x3 so it doesn't chip or bow too much.

Particleboard is made of sawdust, or coarser ground wood particles. Liquid adhesive is sprayed on the particles and tumbled in a large rotating drum blender to evenly distributed it. Here is a colleague monitoring the adhesive flow while the particles tumble in the blender. He's watching for the flow to stop (which means a clog has to be removed) or the adhesive to run out, which means spraying is complete. - Uploaded with a demo version of FlickrExport 2.

Installing laminate flooring is a popular choice for homeowners looking to update their floors. Laminate flooring provides the look and feel of real wood at a more affordable price. The installation involves laying the laminate planks in a click-lock system, which makes for a quick and easy installation. The overall process includes laying out the planks, cutting them to size, staggering the planks for stability, and using a tapping block and hammer to close the joints. It is important to consider any obstructions, such as doorways and vents, during the installation process and make necessary adjustments.

Affordable laminate floor installation from Sky Roofing Construction & Remodeling offers an affordable, durable, and low-maintenance option for updating your home. Given the high foot traffic in many homes, laminate flooring's durability is a key advantage. Hiring a professional installer from Sky Roofing Construction & Remodeling can also help mitigate labor costs and ensure a high-quality installation. The advantages of laminate flooring make it a great option for those seeking a durable and beautiful flooring solution. When planning a flooring project, measuring the area accurately in square feet is crucial to determining the materials needed for the entire floor.

Durability and Longevity of Laminate Flooring

Durability and longevity are key factors to consider when installing laminate flooring. Laminate floors are known for their exceptional durability, making them an ideal choice for residential and commercial spaces. The materials used in laminate flooring, such as high-density fiberboard (HDF) or particleboard, contribute to its strength and ability to withstand heavy foot traffic. Additionally, the manufacturing techniques employed, such as the lamination process, further enhance the durability of the flooring by adding a protective layer that resists scratches, dents, and stains.

Some laminate flooring products extend their lifespan and include additional features, like water-resistant coatings or underlayment. These features make laminate flooring particularly suitable for high-traffic areas where wear and tear are a common challenge to homeowners. With proper care and maintenance, laminate flooring can last many years, offering a long-lasting and cost-effective solution for any space.

Installation Process

The installation process for laminate flooring involves several key steps that must be followed to achieve a successful and professional-looking result. Before beginning the installation, it is important to inspect the planks for any damage or defects, ensuring that they are in good condition. Once the planks are inspected, gather the necessary tools and materials to complete the installation. These may include a tape measure, rubber mallet, utility knife, and foam underlayment.

To begin the installation, start by laying out the planks in the desired pattern, leaving a small expansion gap around the room's edges for expansion. Spacers can be used to maintain a consistent gap between the planks. Cutting the planks to fit around doorways or other obstacles may be necessary as the installation progresses. This can be done using a saw or a special laminate-cutting tool. For uneven floors, additional preparation may be required to ensure a smooth surface for the laminate.

Once all planks are in place, filling gaps or seams with the appropriate filler is important. Using duct tape can help secure the underlayment and prevent it from shifting during the installation. Following these step-by-step instructions and using the proper tools ensures a smooth and professional laminate installation.

When planning your project, calculate the area in square feet to determine the flooring material needed. By adhering to these guidelines, you can achieve a beautiful and long-lasting laminate floor that provides many benefits and advantages for your space.

Maintenance and Care for Laminate Floors

Maintaining and caring for laminate flooring is essential to ensure its longevity and keep it looking its best. By following the recommended maintenance procedures and care guidelines, you can prevent water damage and maintain the beauty of your laminate floors. Regular cleaning removes dirt and debris that can scratch the surface, such as sweeping or vacuuming with a soft brush attachment.

Avoid using abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the laminate. It is also recommended to use furniture pads or felt under the legs of heavy furniture to prevent scratching. Common mistakes people make include not cleaning up spills immediately, which can lead to liquid seeping into the laminate and causing water damage.

Before performing any maintenance, always check for damage, such as scratches or chips, and address them promptly to prevent further deterioration. It is important to avoid excessive moisture on the laminate floors, as prolonged exposure to water can cause warping or swelling. Following these maintenance procedures and care guidelines can keep your laminate floors looking great for years.

Design and Aesthetic Options

Numerous design and aesthetic options can greatly enhance your home's overall look and appeal when installing laminate flooring. From various patterns and textures to various colors and finishes, laminate flooring offers endless possibilities to suit your style and preferences. Whether you prefer the timeless elegance of hardwood or the sleek and modern look of stone, laminate flooring can replicate the appearance of these materials with impressive accuracy.

Some laminate flooring options even offer textured options, adding depth and realism to the floor's appearance. By carefully selecting the design and aesthetic options that best complement your home's interior design, you can create a visually appealing space that reflects your unique personality. However, it is important to balance aesthetics with practicality, considering durability, maintenance, and functionality factors.

By striking the right balance between aesthetics and practicality, you can achieve a beautiful living space that looks great and meets your daily needs. Whether choosing from a wide range of laminate boards or considering the various textured options, laminate flooring offers versatility and style to enhance any room in your home.

Cost and Budget Considerations

When considering laminate flooring for your home, it is essential to consider the cost and budget considerations associated with the project. Laminate flooring prices can vary based on multiple variables, such as the quality or grade of the laminate, the desired style or design, and the overall scope of the installation. However, it is crucial to remember that additional costs may arise during installation, such as removing and disposing of old flooring, purchasing underlayment or moisture barriers, and any necessary floor preparation. By understanding these relevant facts and considering these additional expenses, you can better plan and budget for your laminate flooring installation project.

When estimating your project's square footage, it's important to factor in material and labor costs. While laminate flooring typically offers an affordable option compared to other flooring materials like hardwood flooring or tile flooring, it's essential to consider the average costs associated with installation. Requesting quotes from multiple contractors can help ensure you receive a competitive project price.

Moreover, additional preparation may be required if your home has a concrete floor, adding to the labor costs. However, despite these potential expenses, installing laminate flooring remains a cost-effective and durable option for many homeowners. By considering the cost factors and keeping these budget considerations in mind, you can make an informed decision and enjoy the benefits of laminate flooring for years.

I drilled 361 holes with a faustner drill head into a particleboard on Sunday. It's been hard sudatory work, my right hand still is a bit sore and our kitchen now is all dusty to the last corner. However - this is the result and I hope it will pay in means of lots of playing fun. This board can be used for a variety of games such as Go, Xstones, Tak, Parcheesi and so on... I just have to think of ways to mark the actual playing fields...

The finished test panel. From here, we place the panel in an insulated box with the rest of the days panels to allow continued curing of adhesive as might be seen in a particleboard plant where panels are stacked as they come out of the press. I think that's a wild grape, beside the torn particleboard. I like how the torn board's insides are as close to "colorful" as this shot gets.

The next step is to sand the rings flat. I have mounted a flat piece of particleboard to my faceplate of my lathe and use two-sided tape to mount the ring to the board. With the lathe at slow speed, I use a sanding board to flatten the ring. If the ring is really bad, I will use a gouge to true it up, and then a sanding board.

MFC Boards stands for Melamine Faced Chipboards, also known as Pre-laminated Particleboards. MFC’s have a denser and more uniform constitution as compared to general wood and plywood.

Here's our board in the press. The press is surrounded by walls and has a vent hood. Plastic curtains allow pressing of materials that may release fumes, and wet materials that may release steam. Since we are a research facility, we study materials and processes that do not have complete information. These safety measures help us work safely while still pushing the limits of knowledge. - Uploaded with a demo version of FlickrExport 2.

This adorable shelf I just got at the nun's thrift store a couple weeks ago! It's a mirror and the shelf has white picket fencing around it. I've got to clean the dust off and stabilize it, because it's made out of cheap particleboard and the shelf "wiggles" due to only being attached to the mirror by staples.
