This alcid breeds in the Aleutians and other islands in southern Alaska, the Bering Sea and eastern Siberia. Their winter range is not well known, but most are thought to winter in the north central Pacific. They are very rare in California waters, especially southern California, with most records coming from research ships far offshore or dead birds washed ashore.

These shots are of seven birds found in two groups about 90-100 miles southwest of Santa Barbara on a pelagic birding trip sponsored by Los Angeles Audubon.

Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center. This room was full of parrots and suchlike. Very cool. Not sure why an aquarium had so many birds, but there you are. Virginia does things differently, I guess.

That's the biggest flock to have passed over here. Caught me unawares whilst watching the sunset, so my settings were wrong.

Ring-necked Parakeet in Indian Bean Tree (Catalpa speciosa)

Not a remarkable image but not bad for handheld. In order to get a shot of one right out in the open I could only position the lens by handholding :0)

Fortunate enough this afternoon to have a flock of 11 Ring Necked Parakeets flying around in my neighbourhood in Yardley.

We had 3 in the afternoon, going between the tops of the Oak & Sycamore trees. it looked like they were eating the sycamore fruits & possibly the acorns higher up the trees. Then a group of 7 more arrived together and joined the 3 for about 20 minutes, all flying together zipping low over the gardens & then settling in the tree tops. The 7 then flew off & came back about half hour later & joined up with the 3 again for 10 minutes, before the 7 flew off in the direction they came from originally. I think one of the original three is a juvenille .

They are really colourful birds but they are very hard to photograph because their colour is perfect camouflage against the tree leaves & because they fly really fast.

The Rose-ringed Parakeet, also known as the Ringnecked Parakeet, is a gregarious tropical parakeet species that has an extremely large range. Rose-ringed parakeets are popular as pets.

This non-migrating species is one of few parrot species that have successfully adapted to living in 'disturbed habitats', and in that way withstood the onslaught of urbanisation and deforestation. In the wild, this is a noisy species with an unmistakable squawking call.

Rose-ringed parakeets measure on average 40 cm (16 in) in length including the tail feathers. Their average single wing length is about 15–17.5 cm (5.9–6.9 in). The tail accounts for a large portion of their total length.

The Rose-ringed parakeet is sexually dimorphic. The adult male sports a black neck-ring and pink nape-band while the hen and immature birds of both sexes either show no neck rings, or display shadow-like pale to dark grey neck-rings, and nape-bands that are lighter coloured than the surroundings.

I don't usually think about parakeets spending time in pine trees, but the feral population around here isn't exactly particular about what types of trees they perch in.
