New 53 ~ Exotic Special Award Thread ~ # # # EXOTIC IMAGE(ADM. INVITE) ~

There's lots of parrots and parakeets flying around south Florida who successfully established a population here after escaping from captivity. They are very social and fly around in small flocks, almost always communicating with one another along the way. I would love to be able to translate animal talk and can just imagine the conversations that are going on. Anyway, this guy is a Black-hooded Parakeet. It looks very similar to a Nanday Parakeet. The Nanday has a while band around its eyes and more colors in its feathers visible when in flight. Both have the red bands above their feet. If you're interested, here's a link to a Nanday I took in the Tampa area in 2019: www.flickr.com/photos/mykeyc/40566064213/in/photolist-24N... ) I think they are confused with one another as I read that the Nanday is also known as a Black-hooded Parakeet and when looking at images on line I saw the species mixed with each other.

(Black-hooded - Nandayus nenday; Nanday - Aratinga nenday)

I got home from a busted day at the wildlife haunts I often visit and saw parrots in my neighbor's feeders and was able to get some nice shots. This is a Blue-crowned Parakeet, also referred to as a Blue-crowned Conure. They show up at the feeder in a small flock and stay 20-30 minutes before probably heading to the next bird feeder on their itinerary. I'm glad they stopped here when I was home. I'm sometimes asked how or why the background is white. When the background (the sky in this case) is much brighter than the subject, it's necessary to overexpose the background. Otherwise, the sky would have had some detail (not much on this day) but the bird would have been dark. Happy Holidays on the way!

Thank you all for visits, faves and comments - greatly appreciated!

This crimson fronted parakeet was pretty far in the distance but I was excited to capture it in its environment.

Nanday Parakeet, also called Black-hooded Parakeet, is a distinctive small parrot of south central South America, which occurs from southeastern Bolivia and southwestern Brazil south to northern Argentina. It occupies gallery forest, deciduous forests, and palm stands. primarily in the Pantanal, although it also occurs in moist chaco woodland and low dry scrub. Nanday Parakeets feed mainly on palm nuts but will take a variety of other seeds, fruits, flowers and buds, which often are procured from the ground. When not breeding Nanday Parakeet is notable for forming large flocks that wander widely.

Nanday parakeet ~ (Aratinga nenday)

The Nanday Parakeet is typically found in South America, but it has established populations in Tampa and a few other (expanding) areas of Florida. Most likely their origins here are from pet-trade escapees in the 60s and 70s.

Thanks for visiting!

A monk parakeet taken in Florida.

I was lucky to see the UK's only naturalised parrot - The Ring-necked parakeet, he was popping in and out of a whole in the tree. Apparently they became established in the wild in the 1970's after a captive birds escaped or were released.
