Every internet activity involves huge amounts of data taht both needs to be stored somewhere and consumes vast quantities of energy. It is estimated that powering the internet accounts for 2% of global greenhouse emissions. In 2009 Google purchased a paper mill in Finland, designed by the renowned architect Alvar Aalto, and converted it into a data centre. Positioned by the Baltic Sea, the mill's equipment was designed to be environmentally sustainable and its technology has been repurposed to cool the centre's facilities.

The old Papermill in Plainwell. It's an interesting old building(s) as most shutdown mills are. I handheld three shots with the intention of creating a panorama. I had to shoot from between a fence to get this. I would have loved to sneak on to the grounds to get a better position- that light pole is (in my opinion) in a horrible spot!
