Every internet activity involves huge amounts of data taht both needs to be stored somewhere and consumes vast quantities of energy. It is estimated that powering the internet accounts for 2% of global greenhouse emissions. In 2009 Google purchased a paper mill in Finland, designed by the renowned architect Alvar Aalto, and converted it into a data centre. Positioned by the Baltic Sea, the mill's equipment was designed to be environmentally sustainable and its technology has been repurposed to cool the centre's facilities.
