Techniques for using gorgeous handmade papers then the chance to make their

own. Great results with Josie Beszant

I found out about a Red Dzao village in Sapa that makes bamboo paper. On a lark hiked to the village after a long day trekking. It was late in the afternoon and late in the season for making paper. They were only prepared to show me the paper and describe the process.

They boil the bamboo fibers, beat them by hand and then take the pulp patting out onto fabric to try in the sun. The finished sheet is approximately 1 x .5 meters. After talking the men were prepared to demonstrate the process but with a 2-kilometer walk back to the Topas eco village and the sun setting I declined.
