Urbex Benelux -

In 1939 the factory was shut down due to a shortage of workers as a result of the second phase of the general mobilization for the Second World War . 72 percent of the personnel were requisitioned.

Between 1940 and 1945, the factory was badly damaged by bombing, which caused major fires in the paper and wood supplies. At the end of the war, only one machine was ready to use, but a law passed in October 1942 had to stop businesses with damage exceeding 25 percent.

After a slow start-up, the company worked back in 1947 with 140 employees and production had increased to four tons per year. It would take until 1949 before the supply could be normalized.

In the early 1950s, a new crisis arose in the international paper market, causing both demand and prices for paper to drop sharply. From 1954 the market normalized and the De Naeyer factory was able to start growing again. New machines were purchased and a new hall built. During that period they received compensation for the measured war damage.

We haven't heard much about this factory, expect for the fact it was abandoned. Not all parts were abadoned (yet?) when we where visiting. So we kept low profile, sneaking through the bushes and hiding around corners, we found way further and further into the heart of the factory. Most machines have already been removed and most buildings are stripped. Not the most photogenic location, but great fun to explore!

This paperfactory, hidden among the pine trees, has had a rich history. It was built in the beginning of the 20th century, in quite hostile terrain, and had more than 300 employees working on the site. During it's existence it has had many ups and downs, but it managed to remain active during the century. At one point the company was on the brink of bankruptcy, and luckily there was a possibility of acquisition. Unfortunately this did not last long, and according to people who worked here, the company stopped existing due to failing and corrupt management. It has now been left alone in the woods...

I processed this photo with the Tonal Contrast and Glamor Glow filters from the Color Efex Pro 3 filter set. Tonal Contrast allows you to adjust the contrast of the highlights, midtones and shadows separately, plus colour saturation. The overall opacity can be adjusted to control the strength of the filter, or the effect can be applied selectively using any of the available selection tools or brushes (that's true of all the CFX3 filters). Fiddling around with the sliders can result in an HDR-like effect, among many other possibilities. I applied just a touch of the Glamor Glow filter and desaturated the entire image. I'm happy with the grainy result.
