Another cold Wisconsin winter night is nearing amid a snowstorm on the eve of December 3, 1990. I was out in the weather doing some photography after all of us were sent home from work early due to the storm. The last photo of the day ends up being a pan of the nose of Soo Line EMD SD40-2 No. 6602 leading an eastbound through Brookfield, Wisconsin, during the blue hour.
At f16 difraction is really kicking in and ruining sharpness for the small Nikon 1 system. However it was the only way to get a shutter speed slow enough for some panning.
ST PORU and OCS power lays over in front of the Rigby yard office on a Sunday afternoon in the last month of Pan Am operations. A week and a half later, CSX officially assumed control of Pan Am Railways becoming the latest successor to the Boston and Maine and Maine Central. Another chapter of New England railroading had finally come to a close.

Not as sharp as the first panning image posted, but I love how the light illuminates the rider's face. Unedited image.

As the saying goes, accidents can happen, as is the case here with westbound Amtrak passenger train #51, the Cardinal, as it makes its landing into the rebuilt Hinton, WV, station with an unintended pan shot of the leading venerable GE P42DC on the evening of May 25, 2022.

El sol atravesó el cristal de la ventana en una comida muy especial el día de Navidad y se formo el prisma de colores sobre el pan en la mesa donde nos reuníamos todos los miembros de mi familia que en la actualidad somos 20, padres, hijos y nietos.

Being a bit braver this time with the shutter speed, I gone for another pan shot of 43238. Seen passing Cossington working the 1B63 1645 Nottingham - London St Pancras International. My last pic of this powercar before it was withdrawn later that week. 19/4/21.

It's a typical summer evening in 2016 on the Springfield Line in Windsor, CT. Southbound freight EDPL is slowing in preparation for holding at the signal at Windsor Interlocking for northbound freights CSO-1 and CSO-5. Their consist at the time was "just the usual" but is now much more noteworthy in 2022, with MEC 350 and P&W 2007 both belonging to railroads which have changed ownership. Thanks to the unreliability of the Pan Am units the P&W visitors were common on these trains for a few years.

The panning experiment fascinated me. I like seeing common sights in a new way and panning does that. It turned the beach into something almost abstract but not so abstract that the automatic tags couldn't get it right.
Panned shot of GWR Prairie 4555 as it heads through the Somerset countryside with a short milk train. Seen during a 30742 Charters photography day.
Locomotive: Great Western Railway 4500 Class Small Prairie 2-6-2T 4555.
Location: Cranmore, East Somerset Railway.
I wanted more sharpness but it's my first try on panning. Few test shots with speed priority (Tv) and depending on the speed of the subject the Tv varies.
Another challenging part is the light..the slower the shutter speed it brings more light and it's getting overexposed. Not a good thing.
It's fun you should try it! if you have not so..
TIPS:
- start with your foot PLANTED - pointing at end point.
- select dark hue colors background - not like a white cloud, or power lines
- do (or set camera) continous shot (dont let go the index finger on shutter)
- twist your body to the direction of the subject, as subject approach, click and hold shutter to follow it through by moving your torso and arms (keep elbows tight and closed to body - no movement/shake or use tripod ;) and finish off at end point.
- this shot taken at speed of 1/10 sec.
