Holes from special climbing shoes are created when workers climb up the tree to pluck coconuts from the top to keep vacationers safe. Geckos like to use the hole to lay their eggs.
My 'palm tree' was never more than a scruffy bush, pot-bound and very prickly. I decided to replace it with something more friendly, but the palm was difficult to dispose of - cutting off the thorny leaves, getting the roots out of the pot, cutting the trunk in half so it would fit in a bin bag. It turned out there was no solid trunk that one could cut part-way through and snap. It was layer upon layer of wooden leaf bases, separated by fibre (for coir mats!). Saw through a bit, pull the layers apart, saw a bit more...
Note the root ball in the background. No wonder the plant was sickly - there was almost no soil left in the pot.
I went for a walk with my camera in Beverly Hills on February 20, 2015--two days before the Oscars (February 22)---and one day after the beginning of the Chinese New Year, Year of the Sheep (February 19).
