On 10 September 2022, Bakhtawar, holds her her 15-day-old child Husna on the roadside in Jacobabad district, Sindh Province, Pakistan. Mother of four children, Bakhtawar gave birth to Husna as she and her family fled their flood-hit home, “I gave the birth to my daughter Husna on the roadside with help of my mother” says Bakhtawar. "It was raining and raining all day and suddenly in late evening we saw the water level start rising in our village, I (9 months pregnant at that time) have collected our few food items and we left our home. We walked approximately 3KMs in flood water and I have carried my young son Niaz, as the water level was higher than his height, “I was so worried about my baby”. We have not received the tent or any other help, except some cooked food which is not enough for my family," says Bakhtawar.
Ongoing torrential monsoon rains and the subsequent floods have washed away villages and infrastructure in all four provinces of Pakistan, killing more than 1,000 people, a third of them children, since June 2022. The government of Pakistan says at least 33 million people have been affected by this climate disaster, which has plunged already vulnerable populations into further distress. Unprecedented rainfall of up to 5 times the 30-year average swept away dams, bridges, health centers schools and homes within minutes, leaving entire families homeless. They are now out in the open with their young children, under unabating rains. These families need urgent access to shelter, safe drinking water, food, hygiene and medical services. Without help, they will be exposed to hunger and outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera, and many children could die. UNICEF is delivering clean water, hygiene kits, medical and therapeutic food supplies. Additional resources and supplies are urgently needed to support women and children.

Pak Ou Caves are about twenty-five kilometres up-stream from Luang Prabang, at the confluence of the Mekong and Ou Rivers. Kids hang around while their carers sell incense and offerings.
