St Mary of the Purification, Blidworth, Nottinghamshire UK preserves an unusual custom whereby the baby born nearest to Christmas in the Village is ceremonially rocked in a flower-decorated crib on the first Sunday in February. This is supposed to represent the presentation of Baby Jesus to the Temple. This image was taken on December 17th, so 2023's chosen child's arrival is probably imminent! Rocking's Babies are added to a list of names on display in this tiny historic church which dates to the 15th Century.
If we look carefully, Pandan reservoir offers some great details. I kept on walking, till I encountered this tube. It is coming from the
purification station just next the reservoir.

I could have taken essentially the same photo as yesterday, same loco, same working, even the cloud was similar, however I tried Kingsbury Junction instead, with River Tame and its Purification Lakes in the background. 6D95 Bescot - Toton.
6E01 Wolverhampton - Immingham passes the Lea Marston Purification Lakes and Kingsbury Junction, in a lucky patch of sun. According to the information boards, pollution in the Tame as it emerged from Birmingham used to affect downstream to Nottingham, so the river was diverted into a series of lakes, old gravel workings, and slowing down the water flow allows silt to settle (the top lake is dredged from time to time, I think) and the water generally to become cleaner.

Shinto ritual purification
Shinto priests at a temizuya at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shinto Shrine to Inari, the god of rice, Kyoto, Japan. The temizuya consists of a water basin to perform "misogi," a ritual that involves rinsing the hands and mouth with water, symbolizing the purification of the body and mind before visiting the deity.

Even more important than Christmas in Guatemala, Semana Santa commemorates the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ and is characterised by countless church services, numerous public processions and vast Andas, or floats , that can require up to 100 people to carry them through the streets. The incense purifies the air and spirit before the arrival of the sacred Anda.
The faces of the mourners are what made me select this version of this deeply moving scene. The silhouette of the volcano, and cross are also key. My memory is only missing the smell of the incense.

Ritual Purification Building (Mizuya)
Donated in 1618 by the Nabeshima clan from Kyushu, the water basin is made of granite. Unusually, the pillars holding up the roof are also made of granite instead of wood; wooden pillars would be prone to rotting. The carvings of waves and of dragons with waves are typical examples of Momoyama period (1573-1603) carving and polychrome decoration.
Excerpt from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itsukushima_Shrine:
Itsukushima Shrine (厳島神社, Itsukushima-jinja) is a Shinto shrine on the island of Itsukushima (popularly known as Miyajima), best known for its "floating" torii. It is in the city of Hatsukaichi, in Hiroshima Prefecture in Japan, accessible from the mainland by ferry at Miyajimaguchi Station. The shrine complex is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Japanese government has designated several buildings and possessions as National Treasures.
The Itsukushima shrine is one of Japan's most popular tourist attractions. It is most famous for its dramatic gate, or torii on the outskirts of the shrine, the sacred peaks of Mount Misen, extensive forests, and its ocean view. The shrine complex itself consists of two main buildings: the Honsha shrine and the Sessha Marodo-jinja, as well as 17 other different buildings and structures that help to distinguish it.

Excerpt from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gion_Matsuri:
The Gion Festival (祇園祭, Gion Matsuri) is one of the largest and most famous festivals in Japan, taking place annually during the month of July in Kyoto. Many events take place in central Kyoto and at the Yasaka Shrine, the festival's patron shrine, located in Kyoto's famous Gion district, which gives the festival its name. It is formally a Shinto festival, and its original purposes were purification and pacification of disease-causing entities. There are many ceremonies held during the festival, but it is best known for its two Yamaboko Junkō (山鉾巡行) processions of floats, which take place on July 17 and 24.
The three nights leading up to each day of a procession are sequentially called yoiyoiyoiyama (宵々々山), yoiyoiyama (宵々山), and yoiyama (宵山). During these yoiyama evenings, Kyoto's downtown area is reserved for pedestrian traffic, and some traditional private houses near the floats open their entryways to the public, exhibiting family heirlooms in a custom known as the Folding Screen Festival (屏風祭り, Byōbu Matsuri). Additionally, the streets are lined with night stalls selling food such as yakitori (barbecued chicken on skewers), taiyaki, takoyaki (fried octopus balls), okonomiyaki, traditional Japanese sweets, and many other culinary delights.
