Oxford Castle is a large, partly ruined Norman medieval castle on the western side of central Oxford in Oxfordshire, England. Most of the original moated, wooden motte and bailey castle was replaced in stone in the 11th century and played an important role in the conflict of the Anarchy. In the 14th century the military value of the castle diminished and the site became used primarily for county administration and as a prison.
Most of the castle was destroyed in the English Civil War and by the 18th century the remaining buildings had become Oxford's local prison. A new prison complex was built on the site from 1785 onwards and expanded in 1876; this became HM Prison Oxford.
The prison closed in 1996 and was redeveloped as a hotel. The medieval remains of the castle, including the motte and St George's Tower and crypt, are Grade I listed buildings and a Scheduled Monument.

The place seems to have a dark and varied history. There was a museum here once, although this is now closed.
Folsom Prison Blues
Johnny Cash
I hear the train a comin'
It's rolling round the bend
And I ain't seen the sunshine since I don't know when
I'm stuck in Folsom prison, and time keeps draggin' on
But that train keeps a rollin' on down to San Antone
When I was just a baby my mama told me
"Son, always be a good boy, don't ever play with guns"
But I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die
When I hear that whistle blowing, I hang my head and cry
Just got back from a fantastic three days of non stop photography down around the Cooma area with my mate Paul. The conditions were amazing from 6:30am each morning, right throughout the days, and into the evening and early night.
First image from the trip. This is the old Maclaughlin Meatworks, nestled in amongst the hills. I climbed up onto the old railbridge over the road below, and shot this comp around two in the afternoon.
Hope you like "Folsom Prison Blues"

Pray Thomas doesn't get out, I can just imagine the mess he'd make. He's doing time for raping a female hamster. Lots of movement with that nose, wouldn't want to be him, but his wheel sure looks like fun :) Pet store drama!

Hegningarhúsið (The Penalty House) is the oldest prison in Iceland, founded in 1874. It was closed June 1, 2016 after 142 years of operation. The prison could house a total of 16 inmates. These photos are taken a few days after the last prisoner left.
The Eastern State Penitentiary is a former prison in Philadelphia. The penitentiary refined the revolutionary system of separate incarceration (known as the Pennsylvania system), which emphasized principles of reform rather than punishment. When the Eastern State Penitentiary was erected in 1829, it was the largest and most expensive public structure in the country. The prison was closed and abandoned in 1971, as it became too expensive to maintain. It now is open as a museum, but is minimally maintained, making it an exciting place for a photographer.

Abandoned "Prison Guillotine" (France).
Built early 19e century circa, this old prison located in southern France is now abandoned.
Only forty years ago some prisoners were sentenced to death by decapitation (the famous french "Guillotine") inside those decayed walls... No need to describe the overwhelming creepy feeling while spending a day taking pictures alone inside this now silent place...
