The remains of a window and window seats in the ruined keep of Hopton Castle, just outside the small village of Hopton Castle (South Shropshire, in the Welsh Borders region of western England), on a mostly sunny morning at the beginning of June.
The castle originated as an Anglo-Norman site, located by an earlier settlement -- there had been a late Anglo-Saxon manor there. The keep, all that remains, has Anglo-Norman features of the 11th or 12th century, but it may have been built during the 1260s (1264 being the date of the earliest surviving written record of it) in a deliberately "archaic" style. During the "English" Civil War (which actually involved Wales, Scotland, and Ireland as well as England), it was held by Parliamentarians until it was taken by Royalists during a fierce siege in 1644. The part of the structure that survived the siege subsequently fell into disrepair and ruin. A restoration project begun in 2006 shored up walls, conserved plaster, added railings for safety, and provided explanatory panels; the restored site opened to the public in December 2011.
Hopton Castle is located in a quiet valley off a side road not far from the border between southwestern Shropshire and northwestern Herefordshire.
(Information about the castle from the Hopton Castle Preservation Trust website and Wikipedia, both last consulted 30 July 2019.)
As restored, one can imagine these seats covered with cushions, with people sitting in them, making the most of the light and the view.

To commemorate 50 years (to the day) of main line preservation running, a commemorative special train ran from London Victoria to Bath on 27 April 2024. The loco had just emerged from a heavy overhaul and had undergone a few test runs in the previous week or so. On a cold and damp morning, the train approaches Byfleet and New Haw at around 75mph. The train was accorded the rare honour for steam of the fast line from Wimbledon all the way to Worting Junction.

Sally B is the name of an airworthy 1945-built Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress, the only one remaining airworthy in Europe. Based at the Imperial War Museum Duxford, England, Sally B flies at airshows in the UK and across Europe as well as serving as an airborne memorial to the United States Army Air Forces airmen who lost their lives in the European theatre during World War II. The aircraft was delivered to the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) on 19 June 1945 as 44-85784, too late to see active service in the war. After being converted to both a TB-17G training variant and then an EB-17G it was struck off charge in 1954. In 1954 the Institut Géographique National in France bought the plane for use as a survey aircraft. In 1975 it moved to England and was registered with the CAA as G-BEDF to be restored to wartime condition. The Sally B was first fitted with accurate gun turrets and other much needed additions for her role as Ginger Rogers, a B-17 bomber of the fictitious bomber unit featured in the 1981 LWT series We'll Meet Again. During the winter of 1983–84, Sally B was painted in an olive drab and neutral grey colour scheme, in place of the bare metal scheme she had worn since construction, in order to protect the airframe from the damp UK weather. At the same time, she received the markings of the 447th Bomb Group. The Sally B was used in the 1990 film Memphis Belle as one of 5 flying B-17s needed for various film scenes, and it was used to replicate the real Memphis Belle in one scene. Half of the aircraft is still in the Memphis Belle livery, following restoration of the Sally B nose art and the black and yellow checkerboard pattern on the cowling of the starboard inner (no 3) engine, carried as a tribute to Elly Sallingboe's companion Ted White, whose Harvard aircraft had the same pattern on its cowling. Sally B was reworked to B-17F configuration for filming. Since 1985, Sally B has been operated by Elly Sallingboe's 'B-17 Preservation Ltd and maintained by Chief Engineer Peter Brown and a team of volunteers. The aircraft is flown by volunteer experienced professional pilots. The B17 Charitable Trust exists to raise funds to keep the plane flying. In 2008, Elly Sallingboe was awarded the Transport Trust 'Lifetime Achievement Award' in recognition of over thirty years of dedication to the preservation and operation of Britain's only airworthy Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress as a flying memorial to the tens of thousands of American aircrew who lost their lives in her sister aircraft during the Second World War. One of the key events in the flying calendar for Sally B is an annual tribute flypast following the Memorial Day service at the American Military Cemetery at Madingley, Cambridge. This takes place over the May Bank Holiday weekend. Flypasts over former Eighth Air Force bases are also carried out whenever possible during the summer months.

The GCR tried a new event last weekend running trains continuously overnight Saturday to Sunday. I was rostered to sign on at 04.00am on BR Standard 5 4-6-0 73156.
We headed the 05.00 Loughborough to Leicester North service but after running since Saturday morning the fire was clinkered and 73156 didn't steam as well as it normally does. On our return we went on shed where I serviced the loco cleaning the fire & emptying the ashpan. We are now ready for our next trip to Leicester at 09.30.
Another BR Standard, 2-6-0 78018, is also simmering away on shed after working through the night.

Built in 1898, the Romanesque architecture building was designed by George McRae.
was reviewing the HDR tutorial from Trey, one of the skill i was not too aware so far was the multi-layer masking technique, this is a old image that i reprocessed from my Australia Trip.
its a hand-held standard 3 shot HDR further processed with layer masking to choose the best part of each photograph.
my objective in processing this was to make it closest to how my eyes saw it and my brain interpreted the scene. comments and suggestions most welcome as always.

After a short station stop Southern Railway Bulleid Battle of Britain pacific 34081 92 Squadron departs southwards from Rothley during the October Gala. There is a 10mph Speed limit from the platform out to the Up Section signal at Rothley Brook. This can catch the fireman out especially on such a free-steaming engine like 34081.

Not everyone's cup of tea from my generation, but to the younger enthusiast, this is what they grew up with and as a result deemed worthy of preservation in the modern world.
Anyway, a younger customer of ours has seen fit to buy, and throw a substantial sum of money at this bus which has included a new gearbox, an almost complete re-panel, new batteries, new front tyres, various mechanical components and a complete re-spray back into Notts & Derby colours.
This was the Optare Solo yesterday when it arrived back from the paintshop. Now to make some decals . . .
On reflection I wasn't 100% happy with the Conserved shoot so I decided to do a reshoot. This feels much more me and more in line with the concept.
