A Plains Bison at the side of the road in Elk Island National Park near Edmonton.

The alluvial plain about a mile south of Markyate in Hertfordshire. The River Ver is on its way south and here, just three miles from its source, still dependent on heavy rainfall. If there is, a few local roads will be flooded, if there is none, there will also be no river. At this point, the River Ver is almost seasonal and dependent on the willingness of the limestone hills to let go of its waters.

Thought I'd give everyone a break from fall pics. Since we've had some crappy weather, I've been indoors more. That's usually when I turn to Photoshop.

This was inspired by a sketch of an American Indian I did back in my collage daze. I had scanned it years ago then pretty much forgot about it. When I rediscovered it, I went into overdrive with it!! There were a few versions before it morphed into this.

This photo is part of a series within a series. In my post of the female bighorn sheep yesterday, I mentioned that the males of some ungulate species aren't the only ones with horns or antlers. So within my horns and antlers set, I'm posting some ladies with horns.

TGIF right? It’s been highly anticipated this week to be honest. I’m still roaming around the town and looking to shoot some more IR images. It gets me out of my usual routine and that is always a good thing. If you would like to try something different in your photography, what would that be?

Elk Island National Park

There were 2 fellows coming our way and Tabby, my dog, and I going the other way with this bison in between. It took 20 minutes to coax her/him off the trail.

The slaughter of the buffalo on the plains, being the main source of food and clothing for indigenous people contributed to their plight of hunger.

There are approximately 400 bison in Elk Island park

The Pannonian Plain is a large plain in Central Europe that remained when the Pliocene Pannonian Sea dried out. It is a geomorphological subsystem of the Alps-Himalaya system.

The river Danube divides the plain roughly in half.

The plain is divided among Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine.

The plain is roughly bounded by the Carpathian mountains, the Alps, the Dinaric Alps and the Balkan mountains.

Although rain is not plentiful, it usually falls when necessary and the plain is a major agricultural area; it is sometimes said that these fields of rich loamy loess soil could feed the whole of Europe. For its early settlers, the plain offered few sources of metals or stone. Thus when archaeologists come upon objects of obsidian or chert, copper or gold, they have almost unparalleled opportunities to interpret ancient pathways of trade.

The precursor to the present plain was a shallow sea that reached its greatest extent during the Pliocene, when three to four kilometres of sediments were deposited.

The plain was named after the Pannonians, a northern Illyrian tribe. Various different peoples inhabited the plain during its history. In the first century BC, the eastern parts of the plain belonged to the Dacian state, and in the first century AD its western parts were subsumed into the Roman Empire. The Roman province named Pannonia was established in the area, and the city of Sirmium, today Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia, became one of the four capital cities of the Roman Empire in the 3rd century.

The herd of Plains Bison that reside near Delta Junction Alaska came from Montana back in 1928. As of the last count, there are around 900 Plains Bison that roam Alaska in the wild. The biggest herd is the one near Delta Junction Alaska. There are smaller herds located in Chitna Alaska, Copper River Alaska and Farewell Alaska.

The male bison can weigh up to 2000 lbs and stand 6 feet tall while the females can weigh up to 1000 lbs and stand up to 5 feet tall.

Commonly, Bison are referred to as Buffalo. The word buffalo is derived from the French “bœuf,” a name given to bison when French fur trappers working in the US in the early 1600s saw the animals. The word bœuf came from what the French knew as true buffalo, animals living in Africa and Asia, and bison comes from the Greek word for beef animal or ox.

Almost all of my images from Tombstone come from a small number of places along an outstanding hike, however the park does have a number of other spots to see beyond the crazy and massive jagged peaks. The park goes from these vertical peaks to almost plains where from the right vantage point you can see for what seems to be ages. This year, I made sure to try at least one hike that wasn’t the well-known one.

These images were from a relatively easy hike which my friend and I did when we first arrived in Tombstone. The vantage points along this hike were really something. You could get up onto these spires and almost feel like you’re flying - it gave a completely unobstructed view of a really dynamic landscape. I couldn’t get over the changes in textures and patterns through the landscape, with some passing clouds, rain, and sunny spots really making the scene change by the minute. Neat!

Located just south of Spokane, in Washington state, The Palouse is a rich farming area of some 3,000 square miles. It is somewhat reminiscent of Tuscany, in Italy, except instead of vineyards the main crop here is wheat and rapeseed (Canola).

This is a stitch in Lightroom Classic of 4 vertical frames.

For the Macro Mondays challenge "Monochrome" (February 5th 2017)

For "Life is a Rainbow" January White no. 3

I wanted to create a macro monochrome image without using the short-cut of Photoshop post-processing. So this is the best I could do with daylight, enhanced with LED lighting giving a cool white light. The paper is thick watercolour art paper, and not as white as heavily processed printing paper. The paper was set on a sheet of 'bubble' glass to add reflected light. The size measured against a 2x3" credit card is in the first comment field.

HMM!

One from a very memorable (and cold!) encounter with a couple of Plains-wanderers out on the native grasslands of Northern Victoria. Absolutely stunning little birds.

KRUGER NATIONAL PARK is one of the largest game reserves in Africa. It covers an area of 19,485 km2 in the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga in northeastern South Africa, and extends 360 km from north to south and 65 km from east to west. The administrative headquarters are in Skukuza. Areas of the park were first protected by the government of the South African Republic in 1898, and it became South Africa's first national park in 1926. To the west and south of the Kruger National Park are the two South African provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. In the north is Zimbabwe, and to the east is Mozambique. It is now part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a peace park that links Kruger National Park with the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe, and with the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique. The park is part of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere an area designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as an International Man and Biosphere Reserve (the "Biosphere"). The park has nine main gates allowing entrance to the different camps. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kruger_National_Park
