Day trip to Carrizo Plain National Monument. Carrizo's claim to fame is particularly that it lies on the San Andreas Fault so well known in California for its earthquake history. No shakin' today. This is one of my favorite views through the years, and the Tidy Tips in the foreground were wonderful. Especially of note here is the Soda Lake bed, usually dry and powdery white, actually has water in it from our historic rains of 2023.

I've lived in Alaska for 23 years now and have only seen bison three times. The first two times the herd was on the Deltana River at least a half mile away. The third time, five bison came to within 25 yard of us. We were on our way to see family near Tok Alaska when we seen these bison walking in a clearing. Needless to say, we, my wife and I were really excited to see them. We only had a few minutes with them, they turned and went back into the woods, but wow, what an experience.
These bison are part of a herd that was introduced to Alaska back in 1928.
The plain prinia, or the plain, or white-browed wren-warbler is a small warbler in the Cisticolidae family. It is a resident breeder from Pakistan and India to south China and southeast Asia.This skulking passerine bird is typically found in wet lowland grassland, open woodland, scrub and sometimes gardens. The plain prinia builds its nest in a shrub or tall grass and lays three to six eggs.These 13–14-cm long warblers have short rounded wings, a longish tail, strong legs and a short black bill. In breeding plumage, adults are grey-brown above, with a short white supercilium and rufous fringes on the closed wings. Underparts are whitish-buff. The sexes are identical.
In winter, the upperparts are a warmer brown, and the underparts more buff. The tail is longer than in summer.
This is a 5 stitch image captured by zooming in and panning to get a closer view from afar, but to get a nice high resolution capture of the dunes, mountains, and desert brush. The dunes are 800 feet tall and about 6 miles across in this view, to help give it scale.

The park is completely fenced and divided in half by a major highway. On the north half of the park is a managed population of Plains Bison while on the southern half is a managed population of Wood Bison. Excess animals are captured, processed (such as tagged and inoculated) and moved to new locations where they may be trying to reestablish bison populations.
The north half is accessible to the public while the southern portion is closed to the public. Wood Bison can be seen at times along the fence line along the highway so you get the opportunity to see the difference between the two sub species.

A 'Plain tiger' or 'African queen' butterfly( Danaus chrysippus) enjoying the nectar of Lantana flowers in my garden. This butterfly is widespread in Asia, Australia, and Africa.
The Carrizo Plain is a large enclosed grassland plain in southeastern San Luis Obispo County, California. It contains the Carrizo Plain National Monument and is the largest single native grassland remaining in California. It's widely known for its spring wildflowers. Soda Lake is a shallow alkaline lake at the north end of the Carrizo Plain. It has no drainage outlet. The infamous San Andreas earthquake fault runs through the region.
This photo was taken at the southern end of Soda Lake during the legendary 2017 California “super bloom.” The flower bloom there this year is off to a great start but it remains to be seen if it'll equal 2017.
The Carrizo Plain is rather isolated and there are no services for many miles.
