Pip, Squeak and Wilfred are the affectionate names given to the three WW1 campaign medals — The 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal respectively. The nicknames come from a newspaper cartoon strip, where Pip was a dog, Squeak was a Penguin and Wilfred was a young rabbit.

My Grandad was 16 in 1914, and served in France throughout the war in the Royal Field Artillery; he had a chestnut horse (called Jimmy) and helped haul gun carriages. He was seriously wounded in the last month of the war. He recovered but was seriously weakened. He died, aged 56, a few months before I was born, so, sadly, I never met him.

The Grizedale Stages Rally consists of six stages held on the same day. Four of the stages are in Grizedale Forest - two in the morning and two over the same route in the afternoon - the other two are on Broughton Moor.

This year the event was won by Paul Bird and Kirsty Williams in rain, mist and fog.
