Nomadic families travel to holy places in Tibet from all around the realm. Visiting the Tashilumpo Monastery in Shigatse, Potala palace and circuiting the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa are extremely auspicious occasions and people of Tibetan origin take their extended families on these pilgrimages. In 1986-1988 there was a hopeful political window for resurrection of Tibetan Buddhism. Tibetans were allowed to renovate their holy places and traveling was fairly free. 1989 and Tianmen Square changed all that.
I was lucky to crisscross the amazing Tibetan plateau during 86-87 and meet nomadic people in many places. The memory of ancient places of worship during that time is vivid in my mind and the ambiance of Tibet filled me with awe and wonder.
This picture was originally photographed on slide film with my Nikon FE camera and 50 mm lens. I photographed the slide bracketing it with a Nikon D850 camera and enhanced the picture in Lightroom, Photoshop, and Topaz.
I originally created the church for RebelLUG's Abastonia collaboration at Brickworld, but since I didn't post anything with it, I modified it to be completely medieval and then created this fantasy landscape. I wanted to use a few different colors and try some new techniques for the landscape!

I met this sweet pilgrim at the Punakha dzong by the front gate. She was taking donations for string amulets. In Tibetan Buddhism, the threads' colors carry different meanings. Red represents bravery, life force, preservation, and the sacred. White is for friendship, and black for sympathy. Yellow symbolizes faith, rootedness, and renunciation, while green does balance, harmony, vigor, youth, and action. The thread restores the natural order of elements and brings people in a harmony together and makes the body and soul firmly tied together.

An elderly pilgrim advances slowly towards the entrance of the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa. Some would cover the entire distance around the outside of the temple by prostrating every few feet, and others would walk slowly, chanting sacred mantras and spinning hand-held prayer wheels. I presume it still happens.

Kakashi dolls depicting the Shikoku Island pilgrims (O-Henro-san), Kamiyama, Japan. The Henro is a 88 temple pilgrimage, one ofo the oldest in the world, honoring the Buddist monk, Kukai. It is traditionally done on foot, circumnavigating 1200 km of Shikoku Island, taking 30-60 days. The pilgrims wear white outfits, a stole, conical grass hats and carry staffs. Every time I visit Shikoku Island I never fail to see many O-Henro-san.
