The secret to getting a shot like this (for those of you that might be wondering) is to know EXACTLY when and where a bird is going to land. Simply set up for the shot and beginning shooting just a fraction of a second before the bird lands. That's how I do it. Simple, right? The plant is Teasel, which is one of my favorites.

BTW - the nest in the previous photo is already gone. Raccoons raided a couple of nearby turtle nests the previous night and the bush was almost flattened, so I'm blaming the raccoons.

Photos I haven't posted here...

During our photo walk last night, we were walking around downtown Austin, trying to capture some of the holiday spirit with our cameras. At one point, we could get a glimpse of some wonderful color in the sky between some of the buildings, and decided to abandon the holiday subjects and make a mad dash down to the river so we could get a clear view of the beautiful colors. This shot clearly has no focal point, other than the color in the sky, and probably violates several logical rules of photography, but what the hell? I loved the color.

This photo is taken just below a glacier. Its also at the start of a massive cave-system going underneath the glacier.

Met up with George my flickr friend (gobayode photography) to take some shots around Cleveleys & Blackpool.

Dans l'urgence, un rendez-vous fut donné à un indic, mais aucun signe du tatoué...

I took this photo Sunday night, having taken only a small break from working at home all through the day. I'd had hopes of going down to the coast and shooting among the rocks at Land's End because San Francisco had some nice cloud cover (as opposed to fog or bland overcast skies).

It turns out that more of the coast is still blocked off from the oil spill than I had realized. All the beach and trail access was closed off and I kept looking for a place where I could find access. I eventually found a path and hiked downhill. The path got ever more vague on the way down but I eventually reached the beach. Since the sun was setting, the path was sketchy, and the location wasn't very nice anyways I snapped a couple lousy shots and decided to head back. I got completely lost. After about 20ft I couldn't find my trail any more no matter how hard I tried. I ended up having a rough and exhausting hike up through the brush to get back up the hillside about 25 minutes later.

So I didn't get anything close to what I'd hoped. But naturally there's always the cliché Golden Gate Bridge to shoot. Not wanting to come away from the ordeal completely empty handed I snapped a couple bridge shots. At least this was a new angle for me.

At least the bridge looked nice with the low cloud above. The sky was still blue (when you did a long exposure anyways) and the red light from the bridge was kind of cool.

I think it's been a while since I posted a new Golden Gate Bridge shot so I'm not going to feel too bad, but I do try to keep it to a minimum.

None of the flies (or other insects) in my photos are frozen or dead. None have been manually 'posed'. All are photographed alive and well in their natural environment, unless they are being killed or eaten by another insect in the photo.

"Este año se celebró el sexagésimo aniversario del fin de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Los veteranos volverán a reunirse para las ceremonias conmemoraticas que se llevaron a cabo por toda Europa. Frederick Lennart BEntley (80) perdió la vista a causa de la explosión de una granada alemana durante una patrulla nocturna en Normandía. Tuvo que regresar a tientas a líneas aliadas"

So this is Christmas

And what have you done

Another year over

And a new one just begun

Ans so this is Christmas

I hope you have fun

The near and the dear one

The old and the young

A very merry Christmas

And a happy New Year

Let's hope it's a good one

Without any fear

And so this is Christmas

For weak and for strong

For rich and the poor ones

The world is so wrong

And so happy Christmas

For black and for white

For yellow and red ones

Let's stop all the fight

A very merry Christmas

And a happy New Year

Let's hope it's a good one

Without any fear

And so this is Christmas

And what have we done

Another year over

And a new one just begun

Ans so this is Christmas

I hope you have fun

The near and the dear one

The old and the young

A very merry Christmas

And a happy New Year

Let's hope it's a good one

Without any fear

War is over over

If you want it

War is over

A month or so ago, alain astruc and I decided to do a photo exchange. He prepared several photos to send and I did the same. The photos arrived safely, have been matted and framed, and are now hanging in my bedroom! I highly recommend doing a photo exchange :) The photos are also on his website.

Had a fun photo shoot with Rey Rey's Photography while I was in San Francisco.

Check him out at www.reyreysphotography.com/. Also on Facebook at "Rey Rey's Photography"

Here’s some details of how the photo was assembled:

1.The original photo as loaded into Photoshop. Because this model is so large I couldn’t easily get the whole thing in front of the greenscreen. Note the reflection of the green on the wing – this happens all the time with LEGO because it’s so shiny.

2.Fortunately, Adobe After Effects has a tool called “Spill suppression”. I have no idea how it works but it automatically works out there’s a greenscreen and kills all the green tones in the image while leaving everything else more or less intact. Presto!

3.Using some basic colour selections in Photoshop I quickly made this mask to remove the greenscreen.

4.And then I did a bunch more work by hand to cut out the bits that weren’t against the green and clean the whole thing up so the mask is solid black and the screen solid white.

5.Using 4. On 2. allows you to cut out the ship without seeing any green reflections.

6.I made this space picture from some starfield images I found on the internet and some clouds and stuff.

7.The ship can now be superimposed over the background.

8.This one is quite subtle but if you look under the brightly lit area of the wing on screen left you’ll see there’s a glow coming off the ship onto the space around it; which I’ve added by blurring the ship behind itself. It helps the ship to not seem like it’s just been cut out and pasted on.

9.Lastly added some lens flares over the whole thing, to further fix it in place, and because I’m JJ Abrams.

I deem today, "National Photo Appreciation Day"! And I find it appalling that so many amazing photos are being defaced with graffiti in the name of cliche', feel-good inspirational messages. Lets draw our inspiration from the photo itself, and let our minds create the positive message from what we see.

This goes for all of you who enjoy Pintrest. This is my satirical/sarcastic editorial, by the way. If you make those kind of messages, I wasn't talking about you.

Warm green bean salad with dried apricots, apples, grapes and Serrano ham. Sweet and salty, warm and cold -- soooo good!

Jaleo is a Spanish tapas bar/restaurant, with several locations in the DC area. We just wandered in, were seated immediately and had a delicious meal. Appetizers are one of my favorite meals, so this was great. I've since read that many of their tapas are not "traditional", but everything tasted delicious and that's what counts.
