Ilheus da Ribeira da Janela, Madeira

Hidden amidst the vertiginous cliffs on the north coast of the Macaronesian island of Madeira lies the beach at Ribeira da Janela. The beach is special because it contains huge, rounded black boulders and several iconic sea-stacks, known as the “Ilheus da Ribeira” or the “River Islands”. These ilheus protrude like monsters surfacing from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. The otherworldly vista is made yet stranger by the luminous green algae (not technically phosphorescent, but rather photosynthetic, chlorophyta) and the unexpected beam of violet light from the setting sun; Madeira is an island of colourful contrasts.

The full arc of the Milky Way shines over the dark banks of the Gunnison River as Fireflies (Photuris sp.) twinkle and blink amongst the willows and cottonwoods near Paonia, Colorado.

On the previous day, I doused the campfire well after dark and then noticed a blundering rustle amongst the dried cottonwood leaves around the perimeter of the camp. I switched my headlamp onto the lowest setting and discovered a plump toad navigating through the grass and detritus. I went and told my boys who promptly began searching the river bank for toads. They did not discover any more amphibians. However, after switching off his light, my oldest son paused by the river bank in the total darkness and noted green blinking lights. I had no idea that there were populations of fireflies in this part of Colorado, and he and I passed the next half an hour by the water watching and photographing. There were clouds so we focused our attention on the fascinating phosphorescent signals of the beetles.

The next night I returned to the riverbank and the sky was clear and dark. Finding the fireflies again actively signaling their amorous messages across the river and amongst the bushes, I fetched my camera gear and stared around in disbelief. For me, some photographs exist in the mind's eye before I set about finding the circumstance to create a rendition with the camera. On the other hand, some circumstances are so profoundly unexpected that I simply hope to do a modicum of justice to the scene, and I end up feeling grateful if I remember how to properly operate my camera. The image here is of the 'unexpected' variety. Never would I have thought to find both the galaxy and the phosphorescent streaks of fireflies sharing the frame. For good measure, Jupiter is to the left of the core of the Milky Way and Saturn is peeking up just above the foliage.

Technical notes: Stitch of 7 horizontal frames in Lightroom, then the sky and foreground were developed with separate masks in Photoshop CC. I also cloned out a few satellites and airplanes that I thought distracted from the grandeur.

I love watching the colours slowly develop and the clouds to cover the sky as they race towards you! It always pays to be down the beach at least an hour before sunset, and it's a bit like going to a gig, you never know how good the performance will be! One of the best bands I've seen live is Phosphorescent, and this Willie Nelson cover of Can I sleep in your arms is beautiful, as this sunset was! I will sleep on the beach one day!

The sunlight gazing through what openings it can find. This is one of the last Fall photos I took in Kansas before returning to Minnesota. The colors in Lawrence were pretty vibrant on my way out of town. So of course, I was obligated to stop and snap a few frames before my 9 hour trek back to Fergus Falls, Minnesota.

That last shot was pretty cheery so...

A butterfly trying to make a run for it at the PSC. Most detergents have phosphorescent agents that make them extremely attractive to butterflies, so I can understand why this little guy just loves denim. I prefer to think he's trying to make a break for it, though. It was a gorgeous, sunny day outside the greenhouse, and the perfect lure. But he wasn't counting on the guards outside who swooped him off this pant leg and sent him back inside with the other inmates.

NATURE LEAVES ITS MARKS

Onyx (also called Alabaster) is an ancient and precious stone: It was already used by the Latins and the Egyptians in the creation of lucky charms and jewels.

The colors of onyx are almost infinite: from the phosphorescent tones of Pakistani green onyx to the warm tones of Iranian red onyx. In fact, each color (as with most stones/marbles) comes from a different part of the world.

The two main characteristics of onyx are its transparency: in fact it is one of the few materials that can be backlit. It doesn't matter what color it is, all the onyxes placed in 'against light' will give a unique effect of transparency,

The second feature, as mentioned initially, is its unique colors, perfect for those who love color and luxury.

Glow-in-the-dark micro-duckies, doing what miniature phosphorescent plastic waterfowl replicas do best when hit with bright light, then left in the dark.

This was a serendipitous find. Earlier this morning at work, I noticed some candy-colored micro-duckies scattered about the customer service counter. I never found out who brought the plastic critters, but one student staffer commented the figurines were glow-in-the dark. Curious and a bit skeptical, I took one into my office, blasted it with my everyday-carry flashlight, and turned the office lights off. Shortly after that test, this week's Crazy Tuesday theme came to mind, and, well, enjoy!

Edit: I did later find out who supplied the micro-duckies, a student with a fun streak who also found a picture of a red tabby cat to adopt as the service desk mascot.

January marked the fifth month of our year-long "One World" sailing adventure sponsored by Nikon. There were 9 of us on board -- the captain and two crew, a cook, a guide, three photo contest winners and me ("the professional") -- bearing south in a three-masted schooner about 7 miles off the coast of Ecuador. We were feeling pretty good, having bagged several hundred remarkable captures of a golden sun, and then a thumbnail moon setting one after the other on a teal and purple sea, and now we were plowing through furrows of phosphorescent waves with a mantle of diamonds spangling the sky over our heads. The captain was determined to round The Horn while the summer seas remained favorable.

Gradually the stars clouded over, rain fell lightly, steadily, then soon enough in sheets and we were pitched by heavy winds. The main sail was set but she started diving bows-under and in the crook of an 18-foot swell a wall of salt water hit me square in the chest, prying my arms from the mast. Washed overboard I was churned like a cork until I lost consciousness.

At dawn I found myself mildly bruised and beached on the sandy shore of a black lagoon teeming with so much colorful life I thought surely I had died and gone to heaven. Barely thinking I dove back into the brine as an unworldly golden sea creature darted by. I raised my D3, still strapped with its underwater housing to my belt, squeezed the shutter and surfaced to check the monitor, seeing I'd fired too late to capture the creature's head but astounded at the image that did appear. There are no words for moments like this, I thought, when nothing goes according to our plans but we feel strangely more fortunate than we could have hoped for.

Back on terra firma, safe and secure in my dry studio surrounded by the bounty of my many adventures, I am still most strongly drawn to this one image. And now words do come, three especially, bubbling irrepressibly heavenward like the dying confession of some repentant pirate: A Fish Tale. (Taken at an airport aquarium.)

San Diego's Red Tide at night is bright blue, because the plankton that make it up bioluminesce when they're agitated. This can be because of wave action, or fish swimming past.

i struggle to get up for sunrise, but i finally did it yesterday. Typically a bank of cloud was to the east, so the eastern sky was a bit dull, plus the fact it was nearly hight tide meant there was little choice. This is a view looking north west, and I loved the foreground channel as the incoming wave flooded it. Can I sleep in your arms by Phosphorescent would probably have been a better option.

The word 'Pelagia' refers to the fact that its entire life, including the reproductive phase, takes place in the pelagic (body of water) and never rests on the bottom; the word 'noctiluca' refers to the fact that it is phosphorescent in the dark.

A jellyfish that, with the increase in water temperature in the Mediterranean, appears on the coasts causing havoc among bathers due to its stinging properties. The danger lies in the filaments that can measure up to 10 metres long and a small brush with them is like giving you an electric shock.....

➤ Your image must be a pure landscape (i.e., without any man-made objects).

➤ The landscape must be surreal, with no elements of a natural color (e.g., no brown tree trunks, blue water, white moon, yellow sun, etc.).

➤ There must be two animals: one terrestrial AND one aerial, no matter the size.

➤ You must include some geometric element (circle, square, triangle, etc.).

➤ NO GREEN.

The waves at night is a great title by Phosphorescent, for this beautiful sunset at Ogmore by Sea. A long exposure has caught a lot more waves and I think condenses their beauty. This photo is for Mary Lee, one of nature's free spirits.

Another day comes to an end on Temple bay. Another fantastic session alone on the beach. I'm not sure what the proclamation is, probably" I'll be back", so At death a proclamation, by Phosphorescent is fine.

The stone to the left in the photo is called Bruce,s Stone, not far from Craigruie (Kings Rock) where it is claimed that Robert The Bruce addressed his men not long prior to the The Battle Of Bannockburn in 1314.There is a 200 year old Scots Pine tree growing out of it and has always fascinated me ever since i first came here on happy family days out with my folks then my own children and now my grandchildren. It is a very mystical place here as on two seperate night's wild camping, years apart and in different company there was witnessed a green glow/ phosphorescent light crossing the water at a slow pace. One of the sightings was by my son aged around 7 at the time.

I have researched the internet over the years and the only explanation is marsh gas or Will-o'-the-wisp as it was known back over the centuries.

Long before video games had photorealistic graphics and were sold via a digital code, you had to use your imagination a bit more.

In the Commodore 64 days, Infocom developed interactive fiction games, and included "feelies" in the box. These were props that brought their text-based games to life and often doubled as copy protection.

This is a glow-in-the-dark plastic rock that shipped with the game Wishbringer. My dad kept it in this little red pouch. I had always assumed the pouch came with the game, but after doing some research, it looks like he came across this perfectly-sized pouch elsewhere in his travels.

I was just a little kid when my dad bought Wishbringer for our C64. And looking at "The Magic Rock" in the dark was often part of the bedtime routine back then.

Because blacklights are groovy, man.

I wanted to share it tomorrow, but I couldn't wait.

I had the idea for months, but for some reason I never took the photo until now. This was taken at 6AM and I was actually dying from sleep. Usually I don't mind getting up early (it's more, I always get up early, even on weekends, which can be quiet annoying) but precisely that day I stayed until 2AM reading.

This is my street. Cunit doeesn't have a lot of inhabitants, but it's pretty big because they are almost all houses and not blocks of flats. So it has lots of streets too. But this is the most beautiful I've seen so far. You can't see it in the photo, but at the end there are three or four very tall pines that creates a natural arch. It's like passing through some kind of gate.

I don't know if some of neighbours saw me, but I prefer not to know. It would have been funny to see me in pyjamas, barefoot, holding a pillow and standing in the middle of the street.

I hope they won't start treating me like a mentally ill person....

The idea is far from original, but I wanted to contribute with mine too. Sopranosflight recent blue hour photos probably pushed me to finally take the picture.
