I saw this mural on a Toronto street which quite intrigued me as there seemed to be no purpose (that I could conjure up!) Perhaps it's the meaning of life personified and I'm missing the point.

What better way to spend Labor Day Weekend than heading to the lake in some supercars? I hope all my Flickr friends in the States have a happy and safe Labor Day!

Beauty Personified...my wife :)

Thanks for letting me update your profile picture love!

"Make haste slowly, and without losing heart,

Twenty times on the loom hand over your work,

Polish it endlessly, and polish it again,

Add sometimes, and erase often".

In my case for this station, it's not 20 times but several hundred times.

Contrary to what is often thought, this formula does not refer to Homer's Odyssey, in which Penelope, fidelity personified, refuses to take a husband again despite the interminable absence of her husband Ulysses. And who, to ward off the suitors, gives as an excuse, for years, until the return of Ulysses, the making of a large veil that she must finish before a possible second wedding. But dismantles every night everything she has woven during the day.

This is a quote from the French writer Nicolas Boileau dit Boileau-Despréaux, taken from "L'Art poétique", a didactic poem of eleven hundred classic Alexandrians published in 1674, which, in my opinion, retains all its topicality, nearly three and a half centuries later.

Belonging to the obsolete register, it means: do not hesitate to work and tirelessly rework your project or your text, to refine it, like the artisan weaver, who does not cease to put back, as many times as he will need, his work (i.e. the piece of fabric he is making) on his loom.

As I have been focusing on last year's South West Coast Path walks you may have forgotten that I live in Thailand these days. As we near the end of term and our first year here I thought I would bring you some more pictures showing our new home city.

Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan or Wat Arun, ("Temple of Dawn") is a Buddhist temple (wat) in Bangkok Yai district of Bangkok, Thailand, on the Thonburi west bank of the Chao Phraya River. The temple derives its name from the Hindu god Aruna, often personified as the radiations of the rising sun. Wat Arun is among the best known of Thailand's landmarks. The first light of the morning reflects off the surface of the temple with pearly iridescence. Although the temple had existed since at least the seventeenth century, its distinctive prang (spires) were built in the early nineteenth century during the reign of King Rama II.

- The City God Temple or Temple of the City Gods (simplified Chinese: 上海城隍庙; traditional Chinese: 上海城隍廟; pinyin: Shànghǎi Chénghuángmiào; Shanghainese: Zånhae Zenwånmio), officially the City Temple of Shanghai,[1] is a folk temple located in the old city of Shanghai.

Mauritius is a religiously diverse nation, dotted throughout with Hindu temples, Christian churches and Islamic mosques, Hinduism being the largest practiced religion.

Hinduism is a pantheistic religion: it equates God with the universe. Yet it is also polytheistic: populated with myriad gods and goddesses who personify aspects of the one true God, allowing individuals an infinite number of ways to worship based on family tradition, community and regional practices.

Atop this temple sits Saraswati, consort of Brahma the Creator and worshipped as the goddess of learning, wisdom, speech, and music. Hindus offer prayer to Saraswati before beginning any intellectual pursuit, and students are encouraged to offer prayers to her during the school/college term and especially before and during exams.

DAISY-MAUD: “Oh! What a pretty hedge this is!”

JAGO: “Yes it is, Daisy-Maud.”

PADDY: “Daddy, do you think you could take a picture of us in front of the hedge for Mummy June?”

DADDY: “Of course I can, Paddy. That’s an excellent idea! I’m quite sure she would love that.”

BOGART: “Perhaps you could post it on Flickr so then, Mamma Kim can see it too!”

SCOUT: “And all of our other bear friends, their Mummies and Daddies and all our other Flickr friends!”

DADDY: “That sounds like an excellent idea. Now, arrange yourselves nicely so I can take your picture.”

BOGART: “Will you put your paw around me, Jago. I like it when you do.”

JAGO: “Of course I will, Bogart. I’d be honoured.”

DAISY-MAUD: “And I will sit next to you Jago, my big brother.”

PADDY: “Come along Scout. Why don’t you stand between me and Daisy-Maud.”

SCOUT: “Oh yes, and that way there is room for Dolly too!”

DADDY: “Very nice! Now, can everybear say ‘grumbly tummies’.”

PADDY, SCOUT, BOGART, JAGO and DAISY-MAUD: “Grumbly tummies!”

*Camera goes click and whirr.*

The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 3rd of June is “meet cute”, and what could personify cuteness more than bears? For anyone who follows my photostream, you will know that my bears feature quite significantly, and I think they are all very, very cute. They bring me a great deal of joy, and solace when I need it too, as I have very much as of late as I wade though unchartered territory in my life. My bears give me security and love, and they help to inspire my creativity. In this shot we have from left to right: Bogart, Jago, Daisy-Maud, Scout (holding Dolly) and Paddy. If you wish to know their stories, I have listed their biographies below. I hope that you like my choice for this week’s them, and that like they do for me, they make you smile!

My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.

Jago was a gift from a dear friend in England. He is made of English mohair with suede paw pads and glass eyes. He is a gentle bear, kind and patient who carries an air of calm about him. He is already fitting in with everyone else very nicely.

Daisy Maud is Jago's little sister and was made by the same friend in England who made him. She is made of German mohair with floral fabric cotton paw pads that match her pretty sunhat, and glass eyes. A sweet and loving little girl bear, she is happy to be reunited with her big brother, Jago, and enjoys being spoiled by her new Daddy.

So this started out as a richly saturated colour image, and was shocked when I tried a conversion to B&W -- the old saws became evil personified. That, or I just have an over-active imagination.

I grew some Nasturtiums from seed and planted them in a hanging basket. They have bloomed all Summer long and the increase in sunshine has shown them in a beautiful light.

They have been a magnet for the bees who like to get right inside to the nectar.

I captured this one as was backlit for a few minutes by the sun.

About the 1950 Cisitalia 202 SC Coupe

Italian preeminence in GT styling started here. The Cisitalia coupe created by Battista “Pinin” Farina opened a new school of body design. (however, this one above was one of three custom bodied by Vignale) Pupils on both sides of the Atlantic enrolled. The inspiration for an entire generation of sporting cars, this landmark design personifies the automobile as sculpture.

Consorzio Industriale Sportivo Italia–acronym, Cisitalia–had been established in the thirties by Piero Dusio for the manufacture of sport clothes, tennis rackets and bicycles. In 1939, an exclusive contract for manufacture of all uniforms for Mussolini’s army netted Dusio a tidy fortune. Impatiently he awaited the end of the war to invest it. His next fortune, he was convinced, would be made as an automobile manufacturer.

An ardent amateur driver, Dusio tackled a racecar first, with the considerable help of Fiat designer Dante Giacosa, engineer/driver Piero Taruffi and the legendary Tazio Nuvolari. The Coppa Brezzi in September 1946 saw seven of the brand-new 1100 cc Fiat-derived Cisitalia monopostos on the starting line, a one-two-three Cisitalia finish, and the new marque an overnight sensation. The FIA’s creation of Formula II in 1948 is widely regarded to have been Cisitalia inspired.

The wild success of his first Cisitalia inspired Dusio in two diverse directions. First, because it had performed so nobly in the monoposto, the little 67-cubic-inch Fiat engine might do nicely in a sports car too, provided it wasn’t unnecessarily burdened. Never before was the cause of aerodynamics better served aesthetically. Pinin Farina (his name would be legally made one word in 1961) created a masterpiece. As fast (the Special Sport could top 100 mph) as it was good to look at, the Cisitalia coupe handled like a thoroughbred. Even with a price tag well above $5000, this car had success written all over it. Convertible and roadster versions were available for the open-air-types.

Dusio’s second inspiration was his undoing. The Porsche-designed Grand Prix Cisitalia was as startlingly innovative technically as Pinin Farina’s coupe was in body design. But Dusio’s money ran out mid-development. The GP Cisitalia never raced. The Pinin Farina Cisitalia coupe was consigned to history after few more than 100 had been built. Remnants of Cisitalia were handed over to employee Carlo Abarth.

I have lost my pocket watch. I think it is a box somewhere, but I do not know. This is not my pocket watch.

I find it funny how we personify time so much. Time is a thief. Time is not on our side. A race against time. Father Time. Time stands still.

Had it all to myself. Social distancing personified.

Subtlety is not the prevailing design theme for the Trump Tower in Chicago. It was already a glaring, glass giant; but add to it the new 20' tall letters to its ostentatious edifice and you got yourself Donald Trump, personified!

Crown land (sometimes spelled crownland), also known as royal domain, is a territorial area belonging to the monarch, who personifies the Crown. It is the equivalent of an entailed estate and passes with the monarchy, being inseparable from it. She lived as she loved. With fire, vigor, passion, and light. She was energy personified. A warrior, lover, friend, and most importantly to me, a mother. I still feel her with me. The breeze in my hair, the sun on my face. The scent of lilies on my skin. She will be missed by many, but she will be loved by me. More....than she will ever know.

Well to quote the late, great Leonard Cohen "I see you've gone and changed your name again". I first learned the scientific name of Dark Green Fritillary as Argynnis aglaia, then it changed to Mesoacidalia aglaja, then back to Argynnis aglaja, and now it is Speyeria aglaja. Speyeria is a genus of large fritillary butterflies with sixteen species across North America plus three in Eurasia, including this species. The genus was resurrected in 2017 and the name honours German entomologist Adolph Speyer (1812-1892). The specific scientific name aglaja was one of the three Graces in Greek mythology who personified elegance and beauty. Interestingly the other two Graces (Euphrosyne and Athalia) had British fritillaries named after them too.

The Dark Green Fritillary is the commonest and most widespread of our eight resident fritillaries in Britain, but they are still not what I would call a common butterfly. And they can be infuriatingly difficult to photograph, rarely settling, and when they do it is often deep among the grass. I photographed this male at a limestone grassland site in South Yorkshire. The original name was Darkned (sic) Green Fritillary, showing it was the butterfly that was dark, rather than the shade of green on the underwings. That's why the name doesn't have a hyphen like most fritillaries. And here's the green underside with silver spots: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/4780253578/in/photolist

Puttin' it in my song

Singing loud and strong

Proving all day long

I'm takin' my freedom

Puttin' it in my stroll

Lettin' the joy unfold

I'm livin' my life like it's golden"
