« Pendant un instant inépuisable, je me suis assise près de la neige.
L’âme
qui me servait de refuge s’évanouit et devint
une immensité
appuyée sur l’immensité.
La perfection affluait et renonçait à tout recours
à la réflexion.
La neige
était à un doigt de renoncer à être neige. »
François Jacqmin

This pendant in a shop window caught my eye as the light was being refracted. I moved around it to obtain the most pleasing colours.
Refraction: A ray of light of one wavelength, or colour (different wavelengths appear as different colours to the human eye), in passing from air to glass is refracted, or bent, by an amount that depends on its speed in air and glass, the two speeds depending on the wavelength. A ray of sunlight is composed of many wavelengths that in combination appear to be colourless. Upon entering a glass prism, the different refractions of the various wavelengths spread them apart as in a rainbow.

"Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay."
Robert Frost

Originally from 'a church in Edinburgh', we picked up half a dozen of these rather lovely glass pendants from Holyrood Architectural Salvage, swapped out the old plastic cable for some new woven red flex, and found some three-way enamel ceiling roses. (Both flex and roses came from Enamel Lampshades.) Isn't that timber and metal top piece nice? No idea what the church replaced them with...
The hardboard spacers there are temporary while we agree on exactly what shape we like best - Alison quite likes this or maybe a more pure triangle, and I wonder about a simple circular ring. Either way, they'll end up getting cut from some nice plywood, I think...
...At any rate, it's rather different to the kind of lighting design I normally do at work, and also fun to play around with something so decorative on this project for a change!
