The design history of the OH-58A Kiowa begins in 1961 with Bell’s submission for an Army request for a new light scout helicopter. Bell’s design did not win that contract which went to the Hughes OH-6. Bell designers felt that the basic idea for the helicopter was sound and that it could be adapted for civilian use. The redesign needed resulted in a five passenger, turbine-powered aircraft designated the Model 206A and called the Jet Ranger. Flight testing began in late 1965 and deliveries of production machines began in 1967. By the end of 1968, over 300 had been built. The success of the Jet Ranger and the rising cost of the OH-6 led the U.S. Army to order more than 2,000 Jet Rangers in 1968. Re-designated as the OH-58A, the helicopters served extensively in Vietnam. The Jet Ranger and its military variants are some of the most popular helicopters ever produced. This 1971 version is currently owned and used by the Putnam County Sheriff's Department out of Cookeville, Tennessee.

The Putnam County (Tennessee) Sheriff's Department helicopter is a Bell OH-58 Rotorcraft with a 650hp Rolls Royce Turbo-shaft engine capable of reaching speeds of 149mph, a service ceiling of 15,000ft, and operating for 2 hours over a range of 161 miles. This one was acquired by the Sheriff's Department in 2017 and is handy given the rural nature of Putnam County.
This image was taken at the annual July 4th Car Show held at the Putnam County Fairgrounds and just after take-off. Thank you to all those who protect us on a daily basis but specifically for our sheriff's deputies at this time. Your dedication and sacrifice is appreciated more than you know...

PCSO with Leo the Lion looking on.
The Left Lion goes by the name of Leo, Lennie or Agamemnon.
The right is Oscar, or depending who you talk to, Lennie and Ronnie.
But officially they're named after two brothers, kings of Greek mythology.
Agamemnon on the left, was the ruler Mycanae, good at spear-throwing and hero of Trojan War but he was forced to sacrifice his own daughter to appease the wrath of goddess Artemis.
The right lion is called Menelaus, King of Sparta and husband of Helen of Troy.

Vauxhall Corsa VN09 KVU.
As far as i know this is the only Corsa in the fleet,it is used by the Safer community team/pcso's. Interestingly it has a double set of LED's in the grill as this vehicle rarely does grade 1 jobs.
I'm also thinking it is ex demonstrator?? as it is not Northamptonshire registered and it has only been around a few months.

An elderly lady looks momentarily into my camera while checking the bets which she just written on a lengthwise piece of paper.
She works as a *kubrado" (bet collector) for a two-number game, which is run by a local Small Town Lottery (STL) agent authorized by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO). The popular game is played three times a day and seven days a week, except on public holidays.
Bet collectors like her can and will earn a certain percentage of the prize money if and when any of the bets placed on them happen to be the winning number for a given draw.

Although taken a few weeks ago, i was inspired to post this after looking at RaggleTaggles protest picture www.flickr.com/photos/raggletaggle/4225934753/ and the associated info about the Anti Terror Laws which are being used to hassle photographers. Having read the Act, I now wonder if this picture breaches it.
My next photo will be the Not a Crime self-portrait.
For info, the light falling onto the PCSO came from a jewellers shop. He was deeply engrossed in his window shopping and didn't seem to mind or notice me, but as you can make out, his friend wasn't quite so impressed!
The photo is quite noisy since the ISO was up at 1600.

A photograph from 1996 of an Omega being driven through Sutton Ford in the east of the county.
The Omega had been on sale in Europe as an Opel for a generation but the in UK it was known as the Carlton. The UK received the second generation car in 1994, when it took over duties from the Senator as the top of the range executive car, and sat above the Vectra in the Vauxhall range.
The UK police force used this second generation Omega extensively as a pursuit car for motorway work.

Chief Constable Colette Paul today welcomed two separate reports that recognise both the funding challenge facing Bedfordshire Police and the significant efforts the force is making while also managing to reduce crime year on year. Commenting on the reports published today, she said:
“These reports demonstrate just how well Bedfordshire Police continues to fight crime and protect the public against a backdrop of challenging cuts. Our force is required to find £19.4m over four years (2011 to 2014 – 15) and I am pleased the HMIC recognises that we have responded well to the financial challenges and are on track to reduce costs whilst at the same time protecting the frontline and significantly reducing crime.
Since I arrived at Bedfordshire Police just two and a half weeks ago I have been overwhelmed by the determination and ability shown by all our staff to find new and creative ways to meet these challenges. We have cut costs while improving our performance; less crime means fewer victims and that is something we should all be very proud of.
Looking ahead we do face new challenges but we are determined to work hard to identify opportunities to meet them. The HMIC acknowledges Bedfordshire Police has lower than average funding and a complex crime mix compared to most forces of its size. So again, the fact that we have an 18% reduction in crime over the last two years is testament to our hard working and dedicated staff.
At Bedfordshire Police our aim is "fighting crime, protecting the public."

Braintree's local 4x4 seen responding along The Avenue, Braintree.
I was then stopped by a PCSO who had been asked to speak to me after I 'jumped out' to take a photo, she advised me that I could be prosecuted it the vehicle was involved in an accident as I was distracting the driver by taking a photo.
After seven years we thought it was time for a new look banner on our Flickr photostream.
We have just passed the 25 million views mark so we thought we might go for a montage of image old and new.
We hope you like it and we promise not to leave it another seven years before the next update.

Police vans are widely used and some incorporate a cage for accommodation of a prisoner. Although in the United States it is possible to carry a prisoner or suspect in an ordinary police car, many forces do not permit this in the United Kingdom, as most police cars have no barrier between the front and back seats to protect the officers. Each police force has different policies in relation to prisoner transportation: some will allow compliant prisoners to be transported in response cars (ensuring that one officer sits in the rear with the prisoner, and the prisoner sits behind the passenger seat).
Over the years, Bedfordshire Police have used a number of different vans; probably the most popular over recent years has been the Ford Transit. The Mk 1 Transit was introduced in 1965, and was quickly taken up by the police. Bedford had a number of Mk 1 vans in the early 70’s and these were used for a number of years.
Various models subsequently were introduced; Mk 2 in 1978, Mk 3 in 1986, Mk 4 in 1991, Mk 5 in 1994 and Mk 6 in 2000.
Most of Bedfordshire’s current vans are Mk 7 models introduced in 2006. These vans are used mainly to transport officers, although some have been modified to include a cell section at the rear. Many vans have some additional features, such as better brakes, strengthened bodywork and improved suspension. The vans used by the armed response team also have improved engine performance.Larger vans are also used by some forces as incident response units that may act as a mobile control room at major incidents, and may also carry specialised equipment such as hydraulic door entry and cutting tools.
However, it wasn’t just the police that took a shine to the Ford Transit. In the 1970s, a spokesperson for London's Metropolitan Police Force once pointed out that "Ford Transits are used in 95 percent of bank raids. With the performance of a car and space for 1.75 tonnes of loot, the Transit proved to be the perfect getaway vehicle.
