A 3-board design. 2"x3.25" overall.

Main idea was the breadboard adapter for the MSP430-Launchpad. The other two were added to make use of the space I was paying for anyway.

The top is a simple power supply to fit my breadboards (single side rails).

The bottom is my implementation of a "Mini-Launchpad". It's an idea I had to use some SMD MSP430s I ordered samples of by mistake and some SMD switch/LED combo parts I had laying around. It lacks the programming/emulation side, and only uses the 2211s I have, but it has most of the other features.

I recently received the custom printed circuit boards I had made by OSH Park!

This one is for a 6x voltage multiplier based on circuits I studied online. Since it's a test unit I included screw terminals so I don't have to solder to use it. For the version that goes inside an actual amp chassis I will design another slightly smaller one with solder pads.

After designing it I created the board layout in Eagle. OSH made it so easy, too. No need to generate all the various gerber layers, just upload the ".brd" file and they do all that and show you nifty previews to check over before finalizing the order! They are now going to be my fab house for the indefinite future. :)

In late 60'S, Multi-layer PCBs were very rare and expensive... Here is one sample, incredible when you think that it was hand-designed, Orcad was not invented yet...

Here's a completed pair of the etched copper earrings I've been making.

You can't quite see it here but there's a thick layer of hardened clear coat protecting the face.

I finally had to courage to commit to sending my prototype Lego train control module (LDCC + PF) out for PCB fabrication.

By any measure, this is a very dense circuit layout using very tiny surface mount packages. It bears keeping in mind that this module only measures 56 x 32 mm, i.e. 7 x 4 studs, and is less than a plate tall. A lot of the board area is taken up by the two strips of stud clearance holes to assist with mounting the module within a brick structure. I've kept these two strips clear of components to avoid interference. The PCB is double sided FR-4 and I'm hoping the generous copper poured planes will provide the bulk of the thermal heat sinking when in operation. The circuit should operate relatively "cool" due to efficiencies in design--the one area I worry about is the battery charging circuit when supplying the 10V / 500 mA charging current to the Lego LiPo battery. Depending on the power source, the charging circuit could dissipate up to 1.5 W--we shall see what happens in reality.

I've made a good start on the firmware, but there are so many details in processing the DCC protocol (I haven't even started the Power Functions protocol!) I hope all the code fits in the PIC 18F13K22 micro controller that I chose for the design!

I guess the next step is visiting the DigiKey website for the components--I'm hoping the part cost should be <$20--I haven't put anything exotic into this design--although I'll likely be forced into minimum buy quantities for some items. Ah well, its nice to have extra inventory. :)

I recently received the custom printed circuit boards I had made by OSH Park!

This one is for a small voltage doubler. It rectifies 12v AC current for the tube filaments of a couple of 12EL6 tubes, and doubles the voltage for the plates. I'm not yet sure how well the 100μF caps are going to smooth the current since I don't have a scope, but we'll see..

After designing it I created the board layout in Eagle. OSH made it so easy, too. No need to generate all the various gerber layers, just upload the ".brd" file and they do all that and show you nifty previews to check over before finalizing the order!
