Kyiv. ‘Babyn Yar’. The ‘Mirror Field’ audio-visual installation.
The centre of the ‘Mirror Field’ audio-visual installation is the symbol of the Tree of Life, which is found in most religions and mythologies of the world. The Babyn Yar tragedy shows how easily this tree can be destroyed, and its branches broken.
The structure is made of stainless steel, the podium is in the form of a mirror disk with a diameter of about 40 meters, with 10 columns of 6 meters high installed on it. The columns and the disk were shot through by bullets of the same caliber that the Nazis used during execution in Babyn Yar.
During the day, the sky is reflected in it. At night, the light and the sound of memory pass through the bullet holes, and rays fall from the tops of the columns into the sky. An electroacoustic pipe organ of 24 pipes is built into the podium. An algorithm for translating the names of the victims into sound was developed especially for this pipe organ. Each letter in the Hebrew alphabet has its own number. According to the gematria principle, the names of the victims have been translated into numbers, which, in turn, set the pitch of the sound. The combination of audio waves of the name numbers creates a common sound composition.The main background is overlaid with archival recordings of pre-war Kyiv, unique Yiddish songs of the 1920s and 1930s from the collections of the National Library named after V. Vernadsky restored by the Institute for Information Recording of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Choral and Memorial Christian music, Ukrainian and Roma Memorial songs, works by contemporary Ukrainian composers are performed.
An old photo taken in 2009 with newer shots added. Running water, singing birds, piano and violin being softly played, is all wonderful music to the ear. Took a photo of a piano key board, overlaid and resized it and faded it in. Took a photo of a violin and overlaid and resized it. Used an old photo of some birds in a tree and overlaid it, resizing, fading and erasing to desired effect, converted to black and white in Photoshop, then placed into Topaz Black and White for some minor adjustments, then placed into Topaz Glow 2 for some detail, some minor adjustments in Photoshop plus the border for slider Sunday……….. There are 85 known species of Adelpha, all but two of which are confined to Central and South America. The butterflies are characterised by having a distinctive blackish marbled pattern overlaid on a brown ground colour; and by the presence of a broad orange or white band on the forewings. The hindwings of most species have a white median band.
Adelpha alala is confined to the Andes mountains, and occurs in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and north-west Argentina. This is a pre-montane and lower cloudforest species, occurring at altitudes between about 400-2600m on the eastern slopes of the Andes.

Orfordness is a long shingle spit of land, stretching from Aldeburgh to North Wier Point, opposite Shingle Street, a distance of about 10 miles (16Km). It has been formed by currents in the sea, called Longshore Drift.
Orfordness is separated from the mainland by the River Alde and is the largest vegetated shingle spit in Europe. It formerly came under the Administration of the military where radar was developed during WWII and later used by The Atomic Weapons Research Establishment, for component testing. It is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
When I was taking the macro of my daughter's to create the combination macro with the computer circuits overlaid, my first attempt at taking her eye focused on the window reflection in her eye, and not the eye itself. I ended up taking the second shot that was used in the 'Digital Sight' image I created where it focused on her eye and not the reflection, but kept this capture as well as the focus on the window reflection is pretty cool looking too.
Figured it would be good to post on Happy Window Wednesday too - HWW :))
The Church of the Ascension of the Lord was built in 1882-83. It was erected for the needs of the inhabitants of the village of Demeevka. Then it was outside of Kyiv.
It was originally wooden. In 1885-1892 the temple was expanded with two side aisles and overlaid with bricks.
At the beginning of the 20th century, in 1905-10, a parochial school was built nearby, the building of which can be seen here today.
The church is well known for the fact that on July 25 (August 7), 1907, the wedding of the Ukrainian poetess Lesya Ukrainka with musicologist-folklorist Kliment Kvitka took place in it.
Before leaving Kyiv in 1913, the future world-famous artist, singer, poet and composer Alexander Vertinsky sang in the parish choir.
In Soviet times, the Demeevskaya Church was the only church in Kyiv where worship services did not stop, despite the persecution of the communist authorities.
The future legendary football coach Valery Lobanovsky was baptized in the temple. Later, he donated an altar gospel to the church.

The Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib, meaning "abode of God" or Darbār Sahib, meaning "exalted court" , is a Gurdwara located in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, India.[It is the holiest Gurdwara and the most important pilgrimage site of Sikhism.
The temple is built around a man-made pool (sarovar) that was completed by Guru Ram Das in 1577. Guru Arjan – the fifth Guru of Sikhism, requested Sai Mir Mian Mohammed – a Muslim Pir of Lahore to lay its foundation stone in 1589. In 1604, Guru Arjan placed a copy of the Adi Granth in Harmandir Sahib, calling the site Ath Sath Tirath (lit. "shrine of 68 pilgrimages"). The temple was repeatedly rebuilt by the Sikhs after it became a target of persecution and was destroyed several times by the Muslim armies from Afghanistan and the Mughal Empire. Maharaja Ranjit Singh after founding the Sikh Empire, rebuilt it in marble and copper in 1809, overlaid the sanctum with gold foil in 1830. This has led to the name the Golden Temple.
This photo was taken during late evening, and has two friends engaged on cellphone , even when they are in one of the holiest shrine of humanity. A couple is just gazing at the temple, a lady is standing perhaps to take a cellphone photo and one gent is just sitting idly. Both mundane and religion go together. One can also see on the left the long queue of pilgrims waiting patiently for their opportunity to go inside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Everyone inside this temple complex has to be bare footed and has to compulsorily cover one's head.

Peony.
Ok. I admit it. I’m currently besotted with these things. I really ought to give you a rest from them :)
Peonies produce beautiful flowers with hundreds of large overlaid petals that have gentle crinkles and differing shapes. The flowers can be sweetly scented too and they change colour as they develop. If you’re at all romantic it’s quite easy to get lost in them. And if you are a photographer and they’re just outside your window… well, there is no hope.
This was taken after a rainy night. For the 7DWF group’s Wednesday Macro theme.
Thank you for taking time to look. I hope you enjoy the image (and don’t get lost :) ). Happy 7DWF!

Sometimes Holga cannot be tamed, especially when she is fed with less well known material.
It is in the nature of things (Holga with fixed aperture and exposure time) that one or the other exposure is a "little" off the optimum. With thin and low-contrast negatives, it is nevertheless possible to enlarge to fixed-graded (also overlaid) papers if a high-contrast developer is chosen.

I could not believe the amount of photographers that were dotted around this spot at Cockshaw Hill, Roseberry Topping on Thursday evening. This made finding a spot I was happy with even more of a challenge. I spent quite some time looking for a composition and making sure no other tog was in my field of vision, this is the end result.
Thanks for looking.

I will not be on Flickr tomorrow or Friday. I will be working all day and into the evening on the annual NOS orchid show. Here is just one of the types of orchids in the show. Photographed against a black cloth.
Ascocenda, abbreviated as Ascda in the horticultural trade, was a man-made hybrid orchid genus resulting from a cross between the former genus Ascocentrum and Vanda (Asctm × V). It was first described in Orchid Rev. 57: 172 (1949). Ascocentrum is now synonymous with Vanda so the name is obsolete. Hybrids in the nothogenus × Ascocenda are now properly termed Vanda.
× Ascocenda hybrids are common in cultivation with numerous cultivars and often combine the large flower size of the Vanda parents with the color and compactness of the Ascocentrum parents.
They are evergreen compact epiphytes with upright, narrow, oviform leaves. The inflorescence is an axillary cluster with 6 to 8 open flowers. They bloom twice or sometimes three times a year with long lasting flowers. The flowers are brightly colored, often overlaid with contrasting colors.

A row of trees mirrored in still water.
Captured using in-camera double exposure with the ICM technique (Intentional Camera Movement). Two photos were taken and merged directly in-camera. During the second exposure, a preview of the first image was overlaid to guide the composition. The final result is a single JPEG combining both shots.
Still refining the process...
Out now! :)
Tried something a little different this time! I used a photo (of my own eye) and overlaid it on my hand-drawn eye textures. Let me know if you like these! I'm thinking of continuing to experiment with this technique. :D
Habakkuk 2:19 “Woe (judgment is coming) to him who says to the wooden image, ‘Awake!’ And to the speechless stone, ‘Arise!’ And that is your teacher? Look, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all inside it.”
You can add artificial intelligence to that list. Woe (judgment is coming) to him who says to the artificially intelligent image, ‘Awake!’

Like other fish owls, the tawny fish owl has large ear tufts but they usually hang to the sides of the head and are distinctly messy and tousled looking. They have yellow eyes. Tawny fish owls have been described as the most "attractive" of the fish owls.[6] They tend to be an orangey-rufous color on the crown and upperparts, which are overlaid with broad, blackish markings on the central part of the feathers and spots of the same color as the reddish-brown feather edges. The scapulars are a dingy yellow color, forming a contrasting band which runs across the owl's shoulders. The flight and tail feathers are strongly barred dark brown and buffish. The facial disc is poorly defined but a sizeable off-white area on the eyebrows and forehead stands out. While buffy and brown fish owls are featherless on their legs and the Blakiston's fish owl (B. blakistoni) has totally feathered legs (the latter more like most Bubo), the tawny fish owl has feathering over two-thirds of the tarsi. The legs below feathering are greenish-yellow with greyish-horn coloured talons. Beside the variability of the feathering of the legs, the buffy fish owl is most similar in plumage but is smaller and buff hued rather than orange-rufous hued. The brown fish owl is a much more solid brown color with distinct vermiculations below and no yellowish band across the back.
Compared to eagle owls of similar length, fish owls tend to be even shorter in tail length and even heavier in build, have relatively larger wings (the tawny and Blakiston's being particularly chunky in shape), have considerably longer legs, and have a rough texture to the bottom of their toes. At least the latter two features are clear adaptations to aid these owls in capturing fish. Diurnal raptors who feed largely on fish have similar, if not identical, rough texture under their toes, which helps these birds grasp slippery fish. Unlike diurnal raptors who capture fish such as the osprey (Pandion haliaetus) as compared to most terrestrial raptors, the fish owls have large, powerful, and curved talons and a longitudinal sharp keel sitting under the middle claw with all having sharp cutting edges that are very much like those of eagle owls. Also, unlike many fish-eating diurnal raptors, fish owl will not submerge any part of their body while hunting, preferring only to put their feet into the water, although fish owls will hunt on foot, wading into the shallows. Unlike most owls, the feathers of fish owls are not soft to the touch and they lack the comb and hair-like fringes to the primaries, which allow other owls to fly silently in order to ambush their prey. Due to the lack of these feather-specializations, fish owl wing beats make sounds. The lack of a deep facial disc in fish owls is another indication of the unimportance of sound relative to vision in these owls, as facial disc depth (as well as inner ear size) are directly related to how important sound is to an owl's hunting behavior. Similar adaptations, such as unwillingness to submerge beyond their legs and lack of sound-muffling feathers are also seen in the African fishing owls, which do not seem to be directly related. Tawny fish owls are around the same size as the brown fish owl in terms of linear dimensions. The tawny is 48 to 61 cm (19 to 24 in) long from bill to tail. However, studies have revealed the tawny is surprisingly rather heavier on average than the brown fish owl and, less surprising, is considerably heavier than an eagle owl of comparable length. Six adult tawny fish owls were found to weigh an average of 2,415 g (5.324 lb), with a reported range of 2,050 to 2,650 g (4.52 to 5.84 lb), and are thus one of the heaviest living owl species. Only the Blakiston's fish owl and a majority of races of Eurasian eagle owl (B. bubo) are heavier on average. The maximum (not average) weight of Verreaux's eagle owls (B. lacteus) and snowy owls (B. scandiacus) are also higher but those species have far larger sample sizes of body mass. In terms of standard measurements, the wing chord is 410 to 477 mm (16.1 to 18.8 in), the tail is 215 to 227 mm (8.5 to 8.9 in), the tarsus is 60 to 67 mm (2.4 to 2.6 in) and the bill is 48 to 52 mm (1.9 to 2.0 in). Compared to the brown fish owl, the tawny averages of similar tail length, is larger in size by average wing length and bill size and slightly smaller in tarsal length.
Tuscany colors and shapes, slightly overlaid with some textures. Haven't used this technique for a while but these painterly motifs inspired me to do so.

The Buffalo Savings Bank building opened in May 1901. The building's signature feature is the gold-leafed dome, which measures 23 feet tall and 56 feet in diameter. It is covered with 13,500 terra-cotta tiles. The tiles originally were overlaid with copper, which took on a greenish hue.[1] The tiles have been gilded three times. The last restoration required 140,000 paper-thin sheets of 23.75-carat gold leaf at a cost $500,000 (more than the initial cost of the building).[2] The building contains a 9-foot (2.7 m) clock above the main columned entrance. In 1982, the original bank building received a larger linked addition on the north side called M & T Center (not to be confused with One M&T Plaza). In 1991, the Buffalo Savings Bank company became insolvent and was dissolved. The building currently serves as a branch of M&T Bank and has been designated a City of Buffalo Landmark.

Schichten / Geschichte
Layers / history
When I photographed for the first time, I was impressed by how a person has created a place to survive. The sign now visible was overlaid. It is only now that I could read that the animal shelter of East Berlin was located in the Schicklerstrasse (in the Stadftbahnbogen 79) at the time of the GDR. There is little to find on the internet. At least it is a "notorious" place, over which the history has passed.
I seem to have lost the History brush in my Photoshop - please can anyone help? There used to be a choice on the panel to the left of the workspace, that gave me a choice between History and Art History. All I can find now is the Art History brush, and it doesn't do what I want.....There has to be another way....
You can tell that I really don't know much about Photoshop......
I knew that if I put it in writing as a request, I would work it out! Found it!!! But - there must be another way of taking out a part of an overlaid texture?

The USS Enterprise is once again being attacked by aliens within the Christmas Nebula ... located in a galaxy far far away :)
This a combination capture overlaid in Photoshop ... the saucer section is at f/16, and the remainder of the image is at f/2.8 to get that real explosive looking bokeh.
The f/16 version of this will most likely be posted for the Monday Macro theme ... though I have a few other ideas for this coming Monday's theme (starts with a vowel)
To achieve this image I first took a photograph of raindrops on a gold 'wrapped' car.
I then created the diamond effects in post processing.
I then overlaid a photograph of a fern overhanging a waterfall which I had 'coloured' gold.
Original Image of irrigation equipment overlaid on a tree bark texture, before a bit of fiddling with blending modes and opacity in ON1.
The following three photos are a comparison test between my personal traditional edit style, B&W and my attempt at a process in Movie film development called Bleach Bypass which is the following:
Bleach bypass is a film processing technique that alters the appearance of a film by partially or fully skipping the bleaching stage during development. This results in an image with higher contrast, reduced saturation, and a distinctive grainy texture. The technique is used to create a specific aesthetic, often described as having a "dirty," "cold," or "raw" look, and has been notably employed in films like "Saving Private Ryan" and "Fight Club".
How it works:
* Normal Color Film Development:
Color film development involves a series of steps, including bleaching, which removes the metallic silver in the film emulsion.
* Bleach Bypass Technique:
In bleach bypass, the bleach step is either partially or completely omitted. This retains the silver, which then appears as a black and white layer overlaid on the color image.
* Resulting Visual Effects:
The retained silver creates a high-contrast, desaturated look, often with a noticeable graininess.
Examples of Bleach Bypass in Movies:
* Saving Private Ryan (1998):
.
This film is a prime example, using bleach bypass to create a gritty, realistic war aesthetic.
* Fight Club (1999):
.
The film uses bleach bypass to enhance its edgy and chaotic feel.
* Minority Report (2002):
.
This film employs the technique to achieve a sleek, futuristic, yet slightly harsh look.

La Ceja, Colombia; 2300 meters above sea level.
Adelpha butterflies are colloquially known as 'Sisters'. In terms of appearance they are reminiscent of the White Admirals ( Limenitis ) of Eurasia, and share with them a fondness for flitting gracefully around the lower branches of trees in the dappled sunlight of the forest.
There are 85 known species of Adelpha, all except two of which are confined to Central and South America. The butterflies are characterised by having a distinctive blackish marbled pattern overlaid on a brown ground colour; and by the presence of a broad orange or white band on the forewings. The hindwings of most species have a white median band.
Adelpha lycorias occurs from Mexico to Paraguay, and also in the Atlantic cloudforests of Brazil.
Adelpha lycorias is commonest in cloudforest habitats between about 500-1500m but can be found from sea level up to at least 2400m.

“If dogs run free, then why not we
Across the swooping plain?
My ears hear a symphony
Of two mules, trains and rain
The best is always yet to come
That's what they explain to me
Just do your thing, you'll be king
If dogs run free”
~Bob Dylan~ from his song-
