Help Chile Overcome the Earthquake Chile stepped up efforts to find survivors of an earthquake registering 8.8 magnitude that struck before dawn yesterday, killing more than 700 people, severing the country’s main highway and damaging 1.5 million homes.

The eartquake was centered 200 miles (317 kilometers) southwest of Santiago near the main winemaking region and close to Concepcion, a metropolitan region of more than 500,000 people. Highways and airports were shut by damage and some copper mines closed. The total economic damage may be as much as $30 billion, or about 15 percent of the South American country’s gross domestic product, according to estimates by disaster- scenario modeler Eqecat Inc.

Franka Rolfix II | Trinar 105mm | Lomography Color F² 400

There's little I enjoy more than finding an image I'd previously neglected, or better yet one that I'd worked with and abandoned. I've really no clue why I didn't spend more time with this one three years ago, but it speaks to me deeply today.

On another note, I just adore my two modest Franka folding cameras. For the entire time I've owned them I've preferred the Solida III but as time goes on I've grown to appreciate the Trinar on this Rolfix II even moreso. It's such a weird and idiosyncratic little triplet (so is the Radionar on the Solida, but it's more polite)... It will lose its mind across the frame until you reach center sometimes, but in a very subtle way that produces images that always feel like they're memories, dreams, wishes. That's how this feels to me.

What Does Love Look Like

By Darren Wilson

I was nervous the moment I got off the plane.

I was in Recife, Brazil, and I was stepping out as a filmmaker in a way I had never even attempted before. This entire shoot—thousands of dollars spent on flights, crew, hotels, and everything else involved in making a movie—was hinging on whether or not I had heard God correctly.

My big problem at the moment was that I wasn’t sure whether I had or not.

It started when I was trying to figure out the first place I would film for this new film series, and I often sat in my studio and just prayed, trying my best to hear God’s voice.

I called up my good friend, Will Hart, and asked him if he knew of any amazing people around the world I should go film. He rattled off some names and what they did, and then he said, “There’s also an awesome couple named Nic and Rachel Billman. They’re in Brazil, and they have a ministry that reaches out to the homeless and the prostitutes down there.”

Immediately I felt a surge in my spirit, like butterflies in my stomach or a drop from a roller coaster.

I thought, this must be what God wants me to do.

So I hung up the phone and Googled their ministry. As I was clicking around, I heard (or again, I thought I heard) the Lord say, “Have them put on a banquet for the women, and have Nic sing the song that has never been sung before. When he does that, I will pour out my spirit on those women.”

When I emailed Nic, he was excited about me coming down to film, and the dates I had available worked well. This would be one of the first things I would film for these movies, and right off the bat I was putting my ability to hear God to the test for all the world to see.

Couldn’t we just start in the shallow end, Lord?

I mean, I was going to put on film the fact that I heard God give me directions, and if nothing happened, I’d have a very large egg on my face.

So we flew to Brazil. We filmed with Nic and Rachel, and captured some of what they were doing down there, and the entire time I had a knot in my stomach because I knew the last thing we had to do.

I was a nervous wreck.

Earlier, during an interview with Nic, he had mentioned something I found interesting. When talking about the Holy Spirit, he said that one thing he had observed is that the Spirit never usually came the way you expected Him to.

If you were very conservative, often He would make things “a little messy” and maybe make you laugh, shake, or something else not deemed “normal”. If you were expecting fireworks, often he’d come as a whisper.

That night, we had over 20 girls show up straight from the streets, and we gave them a night to remember. Gifts, good food, a total makeover—it was designed to simply let them know that God loves them and believes they have real worth in His eyes.

Then the moment of truth came, and Nic started to play his guitar and sing a song that he was making up on the spot: the song that had never been sung before. My crew stood poised, cameras ready, and I held my breath.

God, were you going to come through for me?

I was expecting fireworks. Lots of weeping, maybe a little wailing, some shaking possibly, who knows, maybe even a demonic manifestation as God’s spirit drove out the darkness in their lives. I was ready for a showdown.

As Nic sang, at first my heart sank because it appeared that nothing was going to happen.

Then, slowly and gently, various women began to silently weep. All around the room, as the women heard the song the Father was singing to them, they had a quiet but profound moment with Him. We filmed it, and it was beautiful.

Afterwards, Nic came up to me and reminded me of what we had talked about earlier regarding the Holy Spirit’s methods. Then he said, “Think about what love is to these women. It’s forceful. Violent. It degrades them. It makes them do things they don’t want to do. But how did the Spirit show them love? He was gentle. Kind. He didn’t overcome or overwhelm them. It was a small act of trust as He attempted to woo them for the first time.”

And for me, it was a major lesson learned.

God is love, and love looks a lot different than many of our best ministry ideas. And the sooner we can partner with His love and not our own agenda, the sooner we can see Him work in amazing, powerful, and beautiful ways.

Okay, this photo was a lot harder than it looks because it was the first time I've actually gone out here in Stockholm to take photos and I wasn't sure of where to go. This was along a running/walking path and I felt awkward the whole time. So this is about me overcoming that fear of taking self portraits in public, even if it didn't go so great this time around.

Is it not some bittersweet type of irony, that the girl with the flame hair is so afraid of fire?

It is overwhelming; a heat you can't escape. It clings to your every fibre as if it cannot bear to be apart from you and you let it, until it begins to irritate you and you finally wash it off. It takes your breath away and makes you wrap your arms around your chest and close your eyes, just briefly. It is often welcome. On a winter's night it is the warm hug you long for. It is the way you stretch your toes out and lean them closer to it and you almost count them like a child because it takes them in its hands and warms them up. It is what fills the cold, empty space beside you beneath the sheets each night. It is bittersweet and sometimes it is just bitter but sometimes, like marshmallows, it is just sweet.

And yet it's not just the fire that leaves me breathless. It is not just the fire that I'm afraid of.

- today I went and took photos with Lucy and her little sister Sophie. Then I went back out and happened across the bonfire in the field and I danced in it for awhile and I almost, almost, managed to forget how much I hate fire.

While he was at rest, something strange happened. A sprout began to form at the top of his back and in his time of meditation he became consumed by something of nature. He was in the confines of his home, but it still somehow was able to creep into his pores. The mushroom spore locked into his skin and began to spread throughout his body. His time here was very short as the decomposition process began.

I remember a time in December, in the last few weeks leading up to Christmas, sitting at home with my family while watching our church's service online. We had a fire going, my favorite kind of cinnamon rolls, and hot chocolate. I should have been enjoying the morning. But instead, I was absolutely miserable because I was sick with malaria. However, it wasn't the malaria itself that was ruining my day; it was a rash that the medicine for the malaria had given me. I just remember thinking that it was worse than anything that had ever happened to me before (yes, worse than chiggers, stomach viruses, dehydration and the malaria itself... it was bad) and I was hardly able to focus on anything other than the source of my constant irritation. But right at the end of the sermon, our pastor reminded me of something that completely overshadowed all of my annoyance with the rash: Jesus has already overcome the world, and what we go through now is nothing compared to the glory we will be a part of in Heaven.

This was going through my mind tonight in youth... As Christians, we should always be a constant source of joy to everyone around us. This doesn't mean we should always be happy, but in every kind of circumstance we should be giving thanks. We don't have to be overwhelmed by the weight of the world because Jesus has already overcome these things and lifted them off. Take heart.

Story Behind:

On the morning of the shoot we woke up in an unmarked campsite somewhere on the eastern side of California’s Sierra Nevada mountain range. From our camp beneath the tree line of tall pines and corn lilies I could just make out the jagged peaks of the Minaret range in the distance. Our goal for the day was to make it to Cecile Lake, which sits at the base of those very peaks.

We climbed for hours over loose scree and precarious boulders, my arms and neck cooking in the sun. As we got closer to our goal, I began to feel a rush of excitement, knowing that we were soon to reach the lake. Maybe it was the heat and exhaustion of the climb making me crazy, but as we got ever closer to the top of our ascent, I was overcome by an overwhelming emotion and I had to hold back tears as we came to the top.

I was impressed by the sense of motion in this mural - while he is jumping or perhaps keeping pace with the subway car he is also leaping over a street memorial for someone who has died.

I don't know who this character represents and I was unable to find any information about anyone who had recently died in this area.

Davenport, CA - 2013

Davenport has become one of my favorite places to visit along the coast. Its a funky little spot, and every time I go I end up in some sort of an adventure. This visit was no different. After spending some time in another spot I made my way to the pier. To get to the pier you have to traverse down an extremely steep and loose trail with a shear drop off on one side. I am not a fan of heights and was going to opt out and do something else, my wife had fire in her eyes and in nothing flat down she went. Lets just say down and up is not so easy with a camera bag on your back. I had a few private moments on the climb back up, wondering what indeed would happen if the weed that I was using as leverage to pull me up the face of the trail gave way. It worked out and made for a good story over dinner.

This little tree looks like it wishes it were growing anywhere but here!

I had a dream the other night; this cluster of umbrellas was following me around a grocery store. I ran all the way to the desert and finally accepted them as part of my mind.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This was definitely a feat to overcome with this image, I'm going to post an original untouched version in the comments to show you what I had to work with, maybe I'll even create a blog post about it.

Anyway I had the idea in my head and in the spur of the moment I asked my friend Scott to be my hand model and had him posing his hands around all the trees, no hands were copy and pasted!

The original photo had too many distracting elements in it, the bright sky coming through the trees, the color of the trees were too bright compared to the hands, making the hands not pop out as much to the viewer. I played around with this image a lot and yesterday lost 8 hours of time on it due to my stupidity and accidentally deleting everything I had done on it yesterday so I took it in a new direction and added a red tone to the original green flora, added texture to the trees, and darkened the entire image so that the hands were the story. It also looks really awesome in Black and White which I'll post another time. Enjoy!

i photographed this woman as she was interviewed. she's the manager of a local women's shelter. she spoke boldly about the 18 months she suffered as a victim of

domestic abuse. she seemed pretty unfazed as she spoke in general terms about having to escape for fear of her son's life and her own.

then i noticed a scar on her neck.

she apologized at the end of the interview for not going into more specific details, and then her chin started to quiver and she started crying. she cried because she said talking about the abuse doesn't bother her, but having her new husband hear about it and suffer upsets her.

brave, brave woman.
