I like how the lightning followed the tops of the saguaro cactus. It even dipped down into the space between them. I took this photo at the trail head to Sabino Canyon north of Tucson Arizona.

so what is it when we both know?

so what is it when we both know?

what have we become?

oh, I keep forgetting

oh, I'm waiting for nothing

I can trace my outline

on the city down below

a part of you is leaving

and we both know, we both know

I figured it would change

forget our golden age

oh, it never was

now you're a foreign land

I don't understand

oh, what have we become?

oh, I keep forgetting

oh, I'm waiting for nothing

I can trace my outline

on the city down below

a part of you is leaving

and we both know, we both know

Sam... *hugs*

Full disclosure. I did a lot of messing about in Lightroom to create this image. I had gone out trying to get some backlit images of Red Deer, with their outlines illuminated by the setting sun. I managed to get into the right line to photograph this doe with a Readybrek outline. But there was also quite a lot of backlit grass in the scene. So I've not only boosted contrast and shadows, but also cloned out all of the backlit grass. I'm going to try to capture the effect over the coming weeks without the need for so much digital jiggery pokery. Original image taken on Big Moor, Derbyshire.

The legend of Dead Horse Point states that around the turn of the century the point was used as a corral for wild mustangs roaming the mesa top. Cowboys herded them across the narrow neck of land and onto the point. The neck was then fenced off with branches and brush. One time, for some unknown reason, horses were left corralled on the waterless point where they died of thirst within view of the Colorado River 2,000 feet below. A closer look at the canyon floor reveals the ghostly outline of the horses left behind.

The California Nebula is an emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus. It is so named because it appears to resemble the outline of the US State of California on long exposure photographs

My theme for February of 2015 is: in the heart of nature

View On Black, it is fun....

View On White, its even more fun...and clear of statistical distractions.

Leopards are the smallest of the large cats (to include lions, tigers, and jaguars) and are the most widespread, with subspecies found in Africa and Asia. The profusion of spots helps leopards hide from their prey, breaking up their body outline in forests or grasslands.

Although a powerful and clever hunter, leopards are not always at the top of the food chain. In Africa, lions and packs of hyenas or painted dogs can kill leopards; in Asia, a tiger can do the same. Leopards go to great lengths to avoid these predators, hunting at different times and often pursing different prey than their competitors, and resting in trees to keep from being noticed.

Unlike most cats, leopards are strong swimmers and are one of the few cats that like water, although they are not as aquatic as tigers. They are great athletes, able to run in bursts up to 36 miles an hour (58 kilometers per hour), leap 20 feet (6 meters) forward in a single bound, and jump ten feet (3 meters) straight up.

Leopards have incredible strength and can climb as high as 50 feet (15 meters) up a favorite tree while holding a fresh kill in its mouth, even one larger and heavier than themselves! They stash food up high so other predators such as lions or hyenas can’t get it. This way, leopards can return to eat more at a later time. One leopard was spotted dragging a 220-pound (100 kilograms) young giraffe into heavy brush to hide it. Leopards are usually nocturnal, resting by day and hunting at night.

Stories from both Africa and Asia tell of the leopard’s ability to enter a village and snatch a sleeping dog without being detected. The leopard is a champion hunter and has a variety of stealth attacks that catch its prey off guard. From dropping on prey out of trees to stalking prey at waterholes or in dry grasses, often slinking along on the belly, a leopard doesn’t have a predictable pattern to hunting.

'and in this exhibition, we have one of the most expansive and provocative installations I’ve seen within Second Life. For her canvas, Milena essentially takes the entirety of human history, using it to outline the rise of civilisation – notably western civilisation – and the corruptions that have inevitably followed, with a focus on the American Empire.

To say American Shot is richly layered would be an understatement; truth be told it is a complex piece that, for some at least, might make for uncomfortable viewing, given it is exceptionally timely in its presentation, indirectly touching, as it does, on events that have recently unfolded in the United States.' ....... ----->

The exhibition 'American Shot' will be at Nitroglobus until the end of January. Then Milena will change the 14 images on the walls of the gallery, for the other set of 14 which are also part of this exhibition.

The outline of Kerlingarfjöll, a mountain range south of Hofjökull glacier, with peaks such as Snækollur (1488m) and the Loðmundur (1420m). It's a colorful area with a lot of rhyolite. The mountain owes its name to a 25 m high, dark hyaloclastic collumn called Kerling which means 'old woman'. She's standing there, often in the middle of the snow. Stiffened, headstrong...

Surrounded by warm mud pools and steam springs, she never complains. However, from time to time, when icy northern winds move into the valley, poignant, high-pitched woeful sounds can be heard....

They say her voice goes right to the bone.

Sometimes a sunset just helps to beautify a sparse tree outlined against it; one in which the leaves have all fallen off but it is still so very beautiful.

it’s not the bike — it’s the idea of it. carved in shadow, stretched across wood, held still by sun. the spokes turn only in our minds, the rider long gone. what’s left is the memory of motion, drawn in light.

The Elephant's Trunk nebula or technically vdB 142 (Van den Berg 142), so named because of its similarity in appearance to a elephant’s trunk. The bright outline around the "trunk" is the surface of the dense cloud that is being illuminated and ionized by a very bright, massive star. The entire IC1396 region is ionized by this massive star, except for dense globules that can protect themselves from the star's harsh ultraviolet rays. The Elephant's Trunk nebula is now thought to be a site of star formation, containing several very young (less than 100,000 yr) stars that were discovered in infrared images in 2003. Two older (but still young, a couple of million years, by the standards of stars, which live for billions of years) stars are present in a small, circular cavity in the head of the globule. Winds from these young stars may have emptied the cavity.

This was done using the HST or Hubble Space Telescope Palette which is accomplished by combining sub frames using three narrowband filters that capture light produced by glowing hydrogen (Ha), oxygen (OIII) and sulfur (SII) present in the nebula. Green is assigned to hydrogen, blue to oxygen and red to the sulfur.
