On a pretty late fall afternoon outbound Keolis/MBTA train 515 is westbound on Main 1 of the Worcester Mainline at about MP 11.2. The HSP46 is leaning around the curve as they cross over I95/Route 128 on the old Boston and Albany mainline which has had uninterrupted passenger service since 1834!

A southbound VRE train approaches L'Enfant station. VRE is one of few true commuter rail services in the USA, operating to DC only during weekday morning peak and from DC only during weekday afternoon peak. The State of Virginia recently purchased large portions of hte right-of-way and tracks from host railroad CSX and is planning significant improvements along the route, so this may lead to increased VRE service in the future, and perhaps off-peak and reverse peak trains!

After shooting Pan Am BO-1 here I hung around for a pair of Keolis/MBTA trains that showed up only moments apart both with GP40MCs for power. First up was outbound train 1151 heading to Newburyport. They are crossing the old wood pile trestle over Mill Creek where it empties into tidal Chelsea Creek. This bridge is at MP 5.88 on the MBTA/Keolis Eastern Route mainline and marks the boundary between the towns of Chelsea and Revere. While this former Boston & Maine route is still very busy with commuter trains, the only freight traffic across this trestle is BO-1 that generally operates twice a week and is the last freight train on this line that in days of old was an important thru route to Portsmouth, NH and on to Portland, ME.

The abandoned buildings on the peninsula at left are in the abandoned Forbes Industrial Park in Chelsea. What was once the site of Forbes Lithograph Company was planned to be turned into a high-end housing community, but legal battles have kept this from happening. Forbes manufactured wrappers, labels, and 'invasion money' during World War II and was even a Boston & Maine station stop for decades. Thanks to Wayne Johnson for the historic info on the site.

One of my "disputed" shots, a westbound piggyback gets on the move out of Proviso. The location is Pine St (I actually checked out the location on Google, the apartment building to the left is still standing) where the C&NW had a signal bridge that has long since been removed. The only SD45's bought without dynamic brakes, I really loved the "flared" look of these locomotives.

Tonight's empties were grabbing their last cut when I took this shot near Edgewater. From the casual observer, it appears that there are 3 train sets in rotation between Sheboygan and Wyoming.

Metra F59PH 98 was taking an outbound to Elgin on a nice afternoon in Bensenville. It's refreshing to have something a little different running around here.

Just after 7:30am, outbound train 5711 accelerates out of Union Station. While one wouldn't think an early morning westbound on the RVL would be overly-patronized, it did drop off the usual large group of college students for the adjacent Kean University. The F40 "cab car" adds a nice profile to the Multilevel passenger cars behind it.

DMIR 400, BLE904, and DMIR405 sit on point of taconite empties in DMIR's Proctor Yard. DMIR 215 still in her maroon paint waits for the evening yard crew to come on before continuing to drill cars in the yard.

On a bright October day in 2008, the St. Maries River Railroad's outbound Clarkia Turn heads up the river with empty log cars.

With the recent uptick in coal trains, it's been easy to relax and think "everything is back to normal". However, it's important to be diligent in shooting the trains because the day is definitely coming when the coal trains will roll no more. I had a nice conversation last night with a friend who works at the plant and the end is definitely coming.

Monday morning I walked a 3800m counterclockwise route over Mt. Tolmie and back through the University of Victoria (UVic).

Outbound, it was up The Grind (Glastonbury Hill) and up the designated trails to the summit.

I had my new boots on so didn't want to get them dirty so stuck to the gravel pathways.

Continuing on down the eastern stairway it was through Rattenbury Pl to Henderson Golf Course chiptrail.

After crossing Cedar Hill X Rd it was into the UVic Alumni Trails to Finnerty Gardens then out over Gordon Head Rd.

Exiting Varsity Pl it was down Broadmead ave to Palo Alto and home.

Glancing through my photos, I think I may have given the impression that East Africa, is all about nature and heritage stonehouses. Tanzania, while struggling like most developing countries, is modernizing fast. Zanzibar for one has a modern international port, full of international vessels, cargo boats, fishing dhows and the occasional yacht.

The path to progress may be difficult but traditions really cannot be forsaken. Just like these women in kanga robes but in snappy matching rolling bags! Perfect photo op- besides have you seen a more torquoise port?!!

The first of many batches of cameras on their way out of my collection. The "pedestrian" stuff goes first. Am moving to a new home next year and decided to cull the herd - and cull it hard. Difficult to do when you've spent 30-years accumulating the stuff and love all of it. Still, my kids do not have an interest in it when I'm gone, so it's time to release them back into the wild now. Got another couple hundred to go to get down to the priceless few I'll put on new shelves.

Bill Kuba is at the south end of Chicago Union Station to record BN 9906 on a outbound Dinkie on August 28 1979. So much has changed in this spot in 40 years. Harrison St Tower controlled the south end of the depot. A Train Director and Two Levermen controlled the plant. The building to the left is the old Q freight house. Today all of this is gone and Amtraks Dispatcher in CUS controls all the south end. Bill Kuba photo.
