Near Uluru (Ayer's Rock). A common tree in the outback is the "desert oak" which is not an oak at all but was christened this by early explorers. Kurkara, as they are known by the Aboriginees, (desert oak, Allocasuarina decaisneana) juvenile and mature trees can be seen scattered across the spinifex grasslands. The juvenile trees are narrow with a straight trunk and numerous twig-like branches; upon reaching maturity the trees form a large spreading canopy and deeply furrowed corky bark which protects the trees from fire. Kurkara are very slow growing, and many of the adult trees you see are likely to be in excess of 1000 years old. They spread by sending shoots up from the roots.
at Mungerannie, 210 kms north of Maree, South Australia. On the Birdsville Track, it stands on the edge of the Surt Stony, Tirari, Simpson and Strzelecki Deserts. The name Mungerannie is Aboriginal for "big ugly face". If using this 'convenience' don't be surprised to find a redback spider on the toilet seat.
