‘To be a star, you must shine your own light, follow your own path, and don't worry about the darkness, for that is when the stars shine brightest.’ - unknown
A couple of weeks off, a new year and a new 52 weeks project! The theme for the first week is "Our Home". That's our home on the left. It was a moonless night with no cloud and the stars were out in force. It was a lot darker than it appears so I used high ISO and a 20 second exposure to avoid star trails, main problem was a lack of light to auto-focus so had to switch to manual.

Kate was giving this to Goodwill and I intercepted it, "I have an idea." As you can see, not a great idea...but it WAS an idea.
Apparently she (or her mother) acquired this on a visit to Boston - it depicts Paul Revere's ride. So kinda keeping the Fourth of July vibe going....

And I made sure Ansel was more in focus than previously.
Although I much prefer the previous picture's title.
These are the last pictures of Ansel I'll be posting for a while. We seem to have a new addition to the household and I don't want to overload you with cat pictures. Stay tuned for the new girl.

Kate yelled at me that a crane was on the patio so I grabbed my old Canon S95. There wasn't enough time to slap my telephoto on my Z7, and my cell phone - meh - let's say I like the S95's real zoom. Besides, I get to post in the Canon groups.
The sandy was drinking from the bird bath even though there's still some ice in it. And they returned really early. We saw them hanging around Death Valley Country Club* in December. So they must have headed south, then turned around right away. Maybe our little marsh is prime nesting ground and they wanted to register their claim ASAP. The female of the pair was right next to the house in the shadow.
*We have a friend on the local police force. There are so many ambulance runs to this "active senior" community that our nickname is Death Valley Country Club (DVCC). ;-)

Alternate title - Cousin Itt does Christmas
This is the decoration that was the actual objective of the trip where we got the "Santa in Flat Electric Snow Globe." And yes, it's made out of evergreens since we bought it from, you know, a garden center.
Our HOA is pretty fussy about taking down Christmas decorations quickly....we were thinking about taking off the gloves, whiskers, nose and hat, removing the light, and just leaving it sit there as a very conical bush.

My old Nativity set
Elgin, Illinois
January 4, 2022
Kate set this up in a new location last Christmas and the winter afternoon sun was neat.
I used flash and a little Lightroom since it was cloudy that day.
This is my previous experiment with this set which tells more of the story of the set and was a trickier lighting situation.

ODC-Roof
This is my home. It is considered a Dutch Colonial because it has that barn shape to the roof.
Part of our Family Living Room with an artificial Fireplace Unit on which sits our TV. On a cold winter evening this artificial fireplace is a real boon! It is a very cold apt. with very little heat.
NB: The photo got a bit distorted due to my making those comments and the frame in another program. It did look better when I took it before adding all this. However, it gives a more abstract look to the photo.
Yesterday was my...uh...(whispering) birthday. It puts me one year away from that most dreaded of all birthdays...a year with a zero in it.
Kate is a paper crafter and she made me a camera!!! As you can see, it even produced pictures!
It was so cool, I had to share.

Back in November 2024 I sat this very 3 owl lamp (that we got for $30 at the Trader Jack's fleamarket in Pittsburgh) on this round low coffee table I thrifted in the late 90's and have been dragging around to all the various places I've lived for 25 yrs. We tucked it unceremoniously back into the corner of what we called the library in our shoebox of a house in Pittsburgh. (flic.kr/p/2qtHe7B)
Amid the chaos, with a cheap plastic shade we got at the thrift store, it exuded this incredible comforting warmth. As the days felt like they were closing in, the dark encroaching on our time more and more... seeing this warmth galvanized us and started a little flame of motivation. From November 9th, 2024 on we were slowly but surely moving forward. We had been talking about moving away from Pittsburgh almost since we closed on the house we lived in together there.
We both knew Pittsburgh wasn't meant to be our home forever, but it always felt insurmountable to get things to the point where we could confidently list the house to sell. So many big projects that felt like they would never be finished enough to not lose money on the sale of the home, let alone provide us any money to help us pad the down payment elsewhere. This little light of ours stayed in the house until we staged it the final time to list. Now it sits beneath two framed posters of Prince, on a thrifted end table, next to our CRT TV where our older gaming consoles sit. In the music room made for relaxing and unwinding.
We found a perfect vintage shade for it on ebay and now it shines a warm light a year later in a new (well to me anyway) state, in our new home. When we saw this lamp in the corner of our old home I couldn't have imagined making it through all of this (and that was before what we saw unfold from a domestic standpoint in the US). There were times I didn't know if I would; my mental health teetering precariously on the razor's edge of collapse. This little light of ours and the love and support of our friends and family (and frankly an unimaginable amount of forward momentum and calm from Dracula) got us here. Every morning when I go to turn it on at 4AM as I pass out the first cat-snacks of the day to our kaboodle of bad cats I am reminded of the love and hard work that got us here.
