Variety kids and their families pet stingrays, got up-close-and-personal with owls and armadillos, and rode the train all around the Saint Louis Zoo Tuesday night! We were proud to present this free safari for so many of our favorite people in town. Thanks to all who attended, and for Peter Wochniak of ProPhotoSTL for taking these photos!

Dominic is 15 years old and is a sophomore at Memorial Early College High School. He will be taking his first dual credit classes this semester. He got braces in early August so we get a real smile for the first time in years! He’s 5’11” and isn’t finished growing. It looks like he’s inherited Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome from me and has some knee issues already but he did some physical therapy this summer and got orthotics so we are hoping to avoid surgery. Dominic held several pool parties for his friends over the summer and has maintained a great group of core friendships.

NEW: its a brace (itsabrace.com) now redirects to this image. It's now written on my brace. Not the best url, but hopefully will get the message to a few. Feel free to suggest a better URL.

I wear one of these in each of my tennis shoes (or any shoes that I'm wearing). Been doing so for about 15 years. They are a miraculous piece of thermoextruded plastic that enables me to walk and run and keep up with my 5 year old. Otherwise, I'd have to stop and rest every 400 feet or so.

Because my daughter may someday inherit this, I make it a point to wear shorts when I wear these to pretend I won't change my life because of a relatively minor disability. Some days are tougher to tolerate than others.

Most people take a glance and go on their way. No problem, the braces are odd looking. I'm a curious person and appreciate their curiosity.

Some people just stop and glare.

For them - a special message.

Maybe I should sell website advertising on them?

Kelly VanderBeek – Analyst

A three-time World Cup medallist, VanderBeek, a native of Kitchener, Ont., is one of three members of Canada’s ‘Speed Queens’, including Canadian alpine teammates Britt Janyk and Emily Brydon, all of whom are considered among the country’s brightest stars in their sport. VanderBeek brings a great deal of familiarity of the sport to her broadcasting role at Vancouver 2010, having represented Canada on the World Cup circuit and at the Olympic Games. VanderBeek is unable to compete at the 2010 Winter Games due to injury – a torn ACL in her left knee during a downhill training run in Val d'Isere, France in December 2009. The 27-year-old competed at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin and just missed the podium, finishing 4th in the Ladies Super-G event. VanderBeek is married to fellow Olympian David Ford, a kayaker who competed for Canada at Beijing 2008.

John Kucera – Guest Analyst

The reigning downhill World Champion, Kucera began skiing when he was 18 months old and racing at the age of five. The 26-year-old represented Canada at the Turin 2006 Olympic Winter Games, finishing 17th in the men’s combined event. A three-time World Cup medallist, Kucera captured his first-ever World Championship title in February 2009 at Val d’Isere, France. The native of Calgary was considered a medal threat for Vancouver 2010 before breaking his left tibia and fibula during a crash at a World Cup event at Lake Louise in November 2009. As a child, Kucera, whose parents immigrated to Canada from the Former Czechoslovakia in 1981, attended the last Olympic Games held on Canadian soil at Calgary 1988 and watched the alpine events with his parents.

Two Rivers Running Redux

I was so impressed with my shoe fitting from Michelle last week at Two Rivers Running that I made an appointment for Anna. Michelle’s husband, Nick, met us there Tuesday afternoon. He measured Anna’s feet (she is a size 9) and asked a few questions about Anna’s physical abilities. He pulled a few pairs of shoes and Anna liked the first pair best (Nick joked that he runs about 90% success rate with the first pair being the winner). He also did some research about EDS and said sometimes orthotics are not as helpful as we thought. They can make the foot weaker as it is relying on the orthotic to do a lot of the muscular work. Interesting huh?

A sign at the Cambodia Trust's Kompong Chhnang rehabilitation centre, reassuring clients that all services are free of charge.

Disabled people in Cambodia are amongst the poorest of the poor. At $120 - 300, a prosthetic limb or brace costs more than many people earn in a year. Many disabled people will not seek help as they are afraid they will have to pay.

Many landmine survivors try and make their own prosthetic limbs out of wood and scrap metal. They often do not know that rehabilitation services are available, or they are worried that they will have to pay for them. At US$120-300, a prosthetic limb costs more than most landmine survivors will earn in a year.

The owners of these home-made devices have now received proper limbs at the Cambodia Trust rehabilitation centre in Phnom Penh.

The 3-D computer model of Clark's head from which they will make his custom helmet.

Xavier has developed a flat spot on the back of his head that progressively got more noticeable. After his six month visit, we we referred to Monroe Technologies for potential cranial remolding treatment. We had a consultation & turns out he was a candidate for a helmet that will give his skull a chance to round out. This condition is much more common now that every baby is supposed to sleep on their backs to help prevent SIDS. Xavier is a great sleeper & don't roll over just, keeps on lying on his back. That & all the time in the car seat, another flat, relatively hard surface for his skull to rest on. We agreed to the treatment & thankfully it was covered under insurance but we we going to treat him no matter what. This treatment will last two to six months depending on how he responds to the helmet. We figured what ever social embarrassment we have to put up with during this time is instantly out weighed by a lifetime of not having hats fit right or getting teased about a funny looking head. We are sharing the documentation of this experience for everyone to see what it like. The marvels of modern medical science...

my knee issues have made the whole SHOE thing a real pain in the tush.

when I was fit for my orthotics, the guy told me that they "probably would only fit in sneakers" and asked me if I "could just wear sneakers to work?" Which, sure, I'm a software dev and while our company technically has a "business casual" dress code, we are not very strict (assuming no one is wearing anything offensive, yadda yadda).

But I was really tired of wearing sneakers all the time. I looked at the orthotics and thought, "I bet these will fit into my tan Keen mary janes. And perhaps my Danskos."

Yep on the Keens, no on the Danskos.

No on all of my non-running shoes except for the tan Keen MJs (Calistoga).

That's a lot of cute fun funky shoes of mine (mostly mary janes!) that I can't wear anymore, at least not for long periods of time. Sad.

I decided that at the very least, I needed a pair of black shoes that I could wear to work either with pants or a skirt. I ordered the black Keen MJs above (Sydney II). The orthotics fit into them! Hooray!

I also slipped the green Newport H2s into my order -- just to try them on. I really did not like them at all when they arrived. The orthotics don't fit in them (I didn't expect them to). They make my feet look funny. They are a bit of a pain to put on. The green color is REALLY. FRIKKIN'. BRIGHT.

But I've worn them around the house off and on and they've been staring me in the face since they arrived. They have more support than my Tevas and I really like the toe protector. The color has grown on me. They're summer sporty sandals after all. They're for fishing and (maybe some minor) hiking and walking the dogs. They're not for wearing with anything formal. So I'm gonna keep them, too!

Children feel more stable, balanced, coordinated and have more endurance when they wear their SureSteps.

SureStep shoes have custom-designed features especially for kids who wear orthoses. Their wider, deeper heel, toe box and instep allow for adequate room and a comfortable fit.

The SureStep PullOver is a completely unique AFO. It is the first custom AFO that can be used as a freely articulated AFO or as an SMO simply by removing the proximal strut. This convertible device allows children to develop balance reactions and strength while wearing the SureStep SMO's and still gives the option of adding the proximal strut for increased stability and assistance with ambulation.

I'll have three months in that thing.
