ift.tt/2H1Dtkg Osteoporosis is a condition whereby the bones in your body become extremely porous, less dense and much more brittle. Your bones become extremely weak and are more prone to breakage. It is a fairly common condition amongst the elderly, especially amongst women. It is dangerous condition if left unmanaged as osteoporosis symptoms are barely noticeable. The Postcard
A photograph of a sailor on a postcard produced by the USA Studios who state on the back that they have studios in London and the Provinces.
Also on the back of the card, the sailor has written the following:
"Dear Jack,
Do you remember this face?
Have not forgotten you quite.
Hope to see you before long.
Please remember me to Rockey
if still in existence, and others of
the old school.
Best of health and luck yourself.
C3 Ward,
Royal Naval Hospital Haslar,
Hants."
The badge on the man's right arm implies that he is a medic. If anyone out there can infer anything else from the initials on his arm, please leave a note.
Royal Navy Hospital Haslar
The hospital from which the card was sent began life in Gosport as a Royal Navy hospital in 1753. In 1902 the hospital became known as the Royal Navy Hospital Haslar.
In the 1940's, RNH Haslar set up the country's first blood bank in order to help treat injured sailors from WW2.
In 1966 the remit of the hospital expanded to serve all 3 services - the Royal Navy, Army, and Royal Air Force. In the same year it became known as the Royal Hospital Haslow. The hospital grounds are said to contain the bodies of at least 20,000 service personnel.
In 2001 the provision of acute healthcare within the hospital was transferred to the NHS Trust.
The last military-run ward was E5, an orthopaedic surgery ward. This closed in 2007, and the hospital itself closed in the summer of 2009, with the site being sold.

A photograph of a ceramic casting and the finished product produced by investment casting. This product is a part of a knee joint implant used in orthopaedic applications. Investment casting is a method of precision metal forming whereby metals are cast with extremely fine detail, hence its importance in the manufacture of medical device materials.

After ORIF (Open Reduction and Internal Fixation) surgery. The screws and plate stay but the big pin (the nail!) will probably come out.

A weird planning application to build a skyscraper above the Grade II listed Islington House was rejected.
Hopefully the developers wont come back with something like that again. What were they thinking?

Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre
An internationally recognised centre of excellence, providing care for patients with disabling or long-term musculoskeletal conditions and those suffering neurological disability.
The main part of the hospital has been completely rebuilt over a number of years.
Brief History
It began in 1871 as the Wingfield Convalescent Centre.
During the First World War it was a military hospital and was expanded by building a fresh air annexe of wooden buildings.
By 1929 the Wingfield Morris Hospital badly needed rebuilding and Lord Nuffield, then Sir William Morris, donated £70,000 to build new nurses' quarters, seven new wards and a massage department.
In 1936 Lord Nuffield announced another gift to Oxford Medical School. This gift was used to created five clinical chairs. Professor G. R. Girdlestone became the first Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1938.
During the Second World War the hospital was controlled by the War Office.
In 1948 it was designated as a regional orthopaedic centre and in 1956 it was renamed the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.
In 1991 the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre became the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre NHS Trust.
In 2011 the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust merged with the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre NHS Trust to create The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.
This trust currently has control of all three of Oxford's hospitals.

Sayed Habibi Naimi came from the ICRC's Orthopaedic Centre in Herat to take part in the training last May. During the week he discussed the finer points of the rules several times with trainer, Jess Markt. "Before coming here, our knowledge was zero," he admits. "Now everything is clear, and I will share what I have learned with the other basketball players when I go home."

I had to go to the hospital today, funnily enough, not for my ailing back, but for a follow up to my knee operation last year.
When I got to the orthopaedic clinic, it was absolutely packed. There were people everywhere!
However, this was the scene moments before I was called for my appointment. Appointments were running over an hour late, and I was the last person seen!
At least my knee was given the all clear, and I was presented with a colourful photo opportunity! :)
