Due to my efforts our province participates in Orange the World

From November 25th to December 10th, Second Life joins the global movement to Orange the World, supporting UN Women’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. This year’s theme, “Towards Beijing +30: UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” reminds us of the urgency to take action.

At Artsville, immerse yourself in a vibrant campaign featuring:

🎨 Art exhibits & installations

🎶 Live music & DJ parties

📜 Poetry readings

🎁 Special gifts from partners

We also invite bloggers, photographers, and explorers to share their experiences and paint SL orange on platforms like Flickr using the hashtag #WeOrangeTheWorldSL.

Why does this campaign matter? Gender-based violence exists in virtual spaces too. Let’s stand together, raise awareness, and create a respectful and safe community both in-world and beyond.

The global theme for this year is “UNITE! Activism to end violence against women and girls”.

UN WOMEN LINK about the campaign.

Why having this campaign in our virtual world?

Let's face it! Gender-based abuse also exists virtually, it may be in an unintentional or intentional form. The extent of this violence may not be physical but will always result to short-term or long-term emotional trauma and anxiety to the member victims resulting to a violation of the Community of Standards (not TOS) of SL. Raising awareness in our SL community will give us reminders that one cannot just violate and do things according to their pleasure in-world with the expense of another person/ persons. It is time to at least put light into this issue by supporting us.

Looking forward to joining us! This will be an awareness campaign and participation are free!

Color the World Orange is an awareness destination supporting the UN Women's 16 Days Campaign Against Gender-based Violence from November 25th to December 10th. It's a relaxing and healing region where everyone can come to hang-out with friends, enjoy the zen view and listen to nature or meditate and have self-reflections. ABUSE IS NOT ALWAYS PHYSICAL.

This abuse can we also experience online specially here in SL.

Often we hear these:

- Women can't do anything.

. You are manipulating me.

- She's just a girl.

- You're not even pretty.

- I never wanted a daughter.

- You cannot wear that.

- You need to lose some weight or you'll never find anybody.

- You're useless.

- Don't be such a woman.

Abuse is not always physical and it doesn’t always leave visible scars. #OrangeTheWorld #16Days

International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Internationaler Tag zur Beendigung der Gewalt gegen Frauen.

I am so glad for the opportunity to partner with 500px Studio and UN Women to create a photo series for the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, part of the United Nations Secretary-General's UNiTE to End Violence against Women Campaign. For 16 days (November 25 - December 10), with 16 photographers, we are coloring the world orange in an effort to raise awareness.

This first photograph, “1 in 3,” references the statistics that 1 in 3 women and girls worldwide will experience gender-based violence in their lifetime. That is a huge number of people, and with those kind of numbers it is almost certain that we all know a woman who is going through abuse. This issue is so widespread but often not discussed or brought to light. The more we acknowledge that this violence is a real, prevalent problem - both physical or emotional/psychological - and try to help, the more we empower women and begin to make a difference.

See my whole photo essay (and article) here. I will be posting the rest of the photos each day this week!

*What are some common signs of abuse?

- Your partner keeps track of everything you do. They monitor where you are and whom you are with at all times. They prevent or discourage you from seeing friends, family, or going to work or school.

- Your partner insists that you reply right away to their texts, emails, and calls, and demands to know your passwords to social media sites, email, and other accounts.

- An abusive partner may act jealous, including constantly accusing you of cheating. They may attempt to control how you spend money and your use of medications or birth control. They may make everyday decisions for you, such as what you wear or eat.

- They may be demeaning. They may put you down by insulting your appearance, intelligence, or interests. They may try to humiliate you in front of others and attempt to destroy your property or things that you care about.

- An abusive partner may act angry or have a quick or unpredictable temper, so you never know what might cause a problem. They may blame you for their violent outbursts and physically harm or threaten harm to you, themselves, and members of your household, including children or pets.

- They may hurt you physically, such as hitting, beating, pushing, shoving, punching, slapping, kicking, or biting. They may use, or threaten to use, a weapon against you.

- They may be sexually abusive, including rape or other forced sexual activity. They may incorrectly assume that consent for a sex act in the past means that you must participate in the same acts in the future. They may also incorrectly assume that consent for one activity means consent for increased levels of intimacy. For example, an abuser may assume that a kiss should lead to sex every time.

- An abusive partner may threaten to turn you in to authorities for illegal activity if you report the abuse, or if you resist.

You can talk with someone who has been trained to help by calling a local helpline.

*What are some safety tips if I am experiencing abuse?

If you think you are being abused, seek help. These tips provide guidance on how to find safety and support.

- Consider sharing your concerns with a trusted friend, family member, or neighbor. Work with them to develop a plan for when you need help. This plan may include, for instance, creating a secret code or multiple code words, sentences, or emojis that would help you communicate more safely with them.

- Develop an escape strategy, such as saying you need to go to the pharmacy or grocery store and, once there, asking to use the phone to call for help. Think through several plausible reasons for leaving home at different times of the day or night in case you need to escape.

- If possible, keep a telephone always charged and accessible and know which numbers to call for help: a friend, a family member, or the police. If your life is in danger, call the police if you believe it is safe to do so.

Try to identify patterns in your partner’s use and level of - violence. This can help you to predict when abuse may escalate.

Image 2 of 5 in collaboration with 500px Studio and UN Women. It is important to me to not only bring awareness, but to hopefully empower others who have been, or are currently in, situations of violence and abuse. This image, “Reclaiming your Voice,” is about finding your voice again in the midst of abuse, and speaking out although others try to silence you. Too often women are met with opposition when trying to speak up or ask for help. Abusers are great at trying to silence their victims, and speaking up is often incredibly difficult when dealing with feelings of shame or fear of not being believed.

For the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, part of the United Nations' UNiTE to End Violence against Women Campaign, I have partnered with 500px Studio and UN

Women to create a photo essay on the subject. For 16 days (November 25 - December 10), 16 photographers are coloring the world orange through their art in an effort to raise awareness.

Save the Girl, Educate the Girl.

Violence against women and girls is everyone's problem. It brings down an entire society. We are ALL touched by femicide in India. Census data shows that poverty and illiteracy are not key factors in India’s female genocide as many assume. The survival of girls is determined by a patriarchal politics of wealth control.

In recent years, the voices of survivors and activists, through campaigns such as #MeToo, #TimesUp, #Niunamenos, #NotOneMore, #BalanceTonPorc and others, have reached a crescendo that cannot be silenced any more.

UN Women and Unilever teamed up in Tanzanian tea plantations to create safer communities for women. Under a new partnership with UN Women, Unilever is supporting over 1,000 small holder farmers and raising awareness among its 6,000 employees in Tanzania.

This year, the partnership will strengthen Unilever’s Women Safety Initiative, which is paying closer attention to prevention and response to sexual harassment and other forms of gender-based violence in all Unilever tea estates and factories. The programme will also work through strategic alliances with service providers, such as the police, legal aid officers, health workers and traditional leaders, who are often among the first points of contact for survivors.

A scene from the Black Women's March against Racism and Violence in Brasilia, Brazil on 18 November 2015.

Daughters, mothers, grandmothers, midwives, ministers, academics, activists, domestic workers and a diverse range of women came from all over the country to draw attention to the double discrimination faced by women of African descent in Brazil on account of their gender and the colour of their skin.

Approximately 48 million black women constitute half the female population of Brazil, yet 70 per cent of the 13 million families benefiting from the Bolsa Familia (Family Grant) programme are headed by women of African descent. There are practically no black women in management roles in business and the 2015 Map of Violence indicates that killings of members of this group have increased by 54 per cent over 10 years. It is urgent to meet their specific needs to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women in Brazil.
