Nearly one-eighth of NY Democratic primary-goers vote ‘blank,’ stick it to Biden in protest over Gaza

Almost 40,000 Democrats — 12% of New York’s primary electorate — voted “blank” Tuesday to protest President Biden’s stance on Israel’s war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, an analysis reveals.

Crunching those numbers — as City & State did — finds another 39,271 “blank” votes for president.

With the blank votes included, the president’s share of the vote drops from 91% of the total to 79%.

The ongoing Israel-Hamas war in Gaza is causing a political headache for Biden by creating a large divide in the Democratic Party.

Polls now show an overwhelming majority of Democrats want a cease-fire in Gaza, which Israel’s military has leveled to root out Hamas terrorists who invaded the Jewish State last Oct. 7.

Biden, Netanyahu, Gaza’s beleaguered population and Israel’s imperiled hostages. Everyone is losing

Six months into Israel’s war with Hamas, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanhayu looks increasingly like a man with nowhere else to turn. He’s boxed in at the Knesset (Israel’s parliament), where thousands of protestors have spent the last four days camped out in tents and calling for his resignation, and derided by the families of Israel’s remaining hostages held in Gaza who – for the first time since the war began – are openly blaming Netanyahu for their loved-ones’ continued captivity.

He’s boxed in in Gaza, where Netanyahu and his Hamas counterparts have been unable to succeed at any sort of cease-fire negotiations since the first pause in the fighting ended late last year. Boxed in along Israel’s northern borders with Lebanon and Syria after a series of increasingly brazen bombings – including a deadly attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus this week – make an expansion of the war look inevitable. And boxed in by Israel’s powerful Ultra-Orthodox community, who as of this week must now serve in the army after more than seven decades of religious exemptions, threatening Haredi support for Netayahu’s every-precarious Knesset coalition.

Yet no matter how quickly the walls close around him at home, Netanyahu’s has never been more boxed than he is right now by his faltering relationship with the United States and President Joe Biden. Never natural partners, the Biden-Netanyahu marriage has always been one of convenience. But while an all-out divorce remains unlikely, the bombing of the World Central Kitchen (WCK) convoy on Monday suggests the president is increasingly amenable to some sort of formalised diplomatic separation.

As The Wall Street Journal declared in a mid-March headline, the relationship between Biden and Netanyahu “is in a serious crisis.” And while many hold out hope that a Donald Trump re-election will repair the relationship between America and Israel, the Republican front-runner’s murky Israel messaging could see him being far less sympathetic to Jerusalem during a second term than he was during his first.

Although Israel has issued a formal apology for the WCK tragedy, it clearly wasn’t enough for Biden, who described himself as “outraged and heartbroken” by the deaths of the workers. Displaying uncharacteristically tough language, the president went on to describe the drone attack as “not a stand-alone incident,” but rather part of a “conflict [that] has been one of the worst in recent memory in terms of how many aid workers have been killed.”

Biden, too, has never been more boxed in by the war in Gaza – which began with the President warmly embracing Netanyahu during a visit to Israel just days after the Hamas attack and has steadily deteriorated since then. While few could have envisioned the scale of Hamas’ murderous ambitions, even fewer conceived of just how damaging Israel’s defense operation would become to Biden’s re-election campaign.

With his roguish tone and recalcitrant rhetoric, Netanyahu finds himself increasingly isolated on the international stage – just as Trump muscles in with competing calls for both a cease-fire and Israel’s right to defend itself. In a typically chaotic late March interview, Trump said Israel had “made a very big mistake” by invading Gaza, going as far as to suggest that Netanyahu’s aggressive battle tactics were responsible for the ongoing surge in global anti-Semitism.

As Israel slogs through its longest war in history, the nation is being torn apart from within. Boxed in with fewer options than ever, Biden and Netanyahu are now turning on each other, and everyone is losing – Biden, Netanyahu, Gaza’s beleaguered population and Israel’s imperiled hostages. Everyone.
