When we were discussing options for this year's autumn hiking adventure, it almost seemed like there was nothing left in northern Scandinavia that we all still wanted to explore. However, after some discussions, we realized that Finnish Lapland might be an interesting and convenient location for our regular autumn outdoor pursuits.
After conducting some research and planning, we narrowed our focus to Finland's northwest, bordering Sweden and Norway. More specifically, we honed in on the Käsivarsi Wilderness Area, which happens to be the second-largest wilderness area in Finland.

Käsivarsi is somewhat atypical for Finland due to its higher elevation (Finland's highest peak, Halti (1,324m), is located in its northern tip), rugged terrain, and limited wooded areas. This combination sounded particularly attractive to us because it meant we would hike across various types of landscapes, both on and off marked trails.
Our itinerary was as follows: Kilpisjärvi/Saana mountain -> Tshahkaljärvi lake -> Siktagurajohka river -> Meekonjärvi lake including trip to Pitsusköngäs waterfall -> Porojärvi lake including ascent of Saivaara cliff -> Guhturgurajávri/Termisjärvi lakes -> Ailakkajärvi lake -> Kilpisjärvi.
An option for 365. The leaves were suppose to be like leaves, and she was going to fly away somewhere. I don't know, but it was an idea.
This was my entry into Windsor Photographic Society mono competition for 25th March 2024. Amanda Wright was the judge and it was commended so pleasing result.
The image was actually a composite and was taken on an iPhone 13 Pro Max for the main background, on a really cold icy frosty and misty morning - 2nd December 2024. The event was a social walk for the camera club.
But the image lacked something in my opinion.
It needed some feature or wildlife and waiting for swans to turn up clearly was not going to happen. So a cut and paste of swans I took back in 2012 in Langley Park seemed the best option.
These were added in and then I used Flaming Pear - Flood2 filter to create the reflection in the dark water area under this bridge. Bit of tidying up and then just needed to enhance the mist.
Used one of my cloud shots and after a few YouTube videos got the mist I liked.
Added some more mist patches using brush and the de-haze feature in Lightroom but adding negative dehaze (ie. slide to the left the de-haze).
In the competition 11 images were held back and mine got a commended, thanks go to the judge.
With this option the ant in question secures his/her/their footing and the metal rods (each side of the upper lip) simply pivot the saddle into place, assuring a comfortable fit across the bridge of the nose.
This model, on Marcel, is fully bluetooth and WIFI compliant, both to international and 'Infrathin' standards. The extendable antennae ear studs are optional (though recommended for premium connectivity, whilst supporting inter-species communication).

Visible in this view are not only the unique undercarriage layout with the four directional main undercarriage legs - in this case they are very slightly turned to cater for the crosswind, but in addition the outrigger wheel can be seen - designed to protect the wing tanks and low slung engines on take-off and landing as when they taxi or when the lift is dumped, the wings droop and the outriggers take up the slack
Additionally, on top of the wings you can see those huge 'tufted' ailerons - here the pilot is working hard to keep straight and level and which double as air brakes too
If you look closely along the tops of the inboard part of the wings - and on the tailplane top surface are rows of spiked vortex generators - used to smooth out the airflow over the wings - decreasing turbulence and therefore increasing the lift
At the very rear, on the earlier models a tail gunner would have been carried but the later models deleted that option with more modern equipment being carried as an alternative
A sobering thought is that the last B-52 to roll off the Boeing production line was in 1962!

The demonstrators at the Parliament Hill whom the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau once called fringe society might have the last laugh. Trudeau's poll has plummeted to all time low in Dec 2024 following Liberal's Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland's resignation from the cabinet on Dec 16, 2024. Now dozens of Liberal MPs are calling for his resignation.
Justin Trudeau, once called Canada's feminist prime minister, now has three prominent female MPs out of his cabinet. First, there were Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott over SNC-Lavalin_affair in 2019, a scandal involving attempted political interference with the justice system by Justin Trudeau and the Prime Minister's Office. The latest is Freeland's resignation over policy disagreements with Trudeau on tax breaks, disbursements and tariffs proposed by US President-elect Donald Trump on Canadian goods. I do wonder what are Justin Trudeau's options, we will see.

A nice creekside hike within the Olympics with an option to check out Marymere Falls. This hike has all types of old growth and lush vegetation.
Most hikers follow Barnes Creek towards Lake Crescent Lodge, but at the junction you will turn left to follow the creek. Soon enough you will come to another junction where you have the option to check out the heavily visited Marymere Falls. This is a popular portion of the trail where most people will be heading. Take a right to stop and check it out if you are interested, otherwise continue onward for Barnes Creek.
Continuing onward, the trail has a much different feeling, as it quickly becomes less crowded.
The trail rolls mostly up and rarely down over the next 5.5 miles. Despite being unmaintained, it is in relatively good condition.
The trail fords four creeks and numerous seeps. While the first is unnamed, the following three creeks are Lizard Head Creek, Happy Lake Creek, and Barnes Creek. The mossy trail winds its way through old growth Douglas fir and western hemlock forests. Younger stands show evidence of the valley's fire history.
In spring, watch out for bunchberry blooms and starflowers peppering the mossy forest floor. In summer, pipsissewa bloom profusely next to wild huckleberries and blueberries. In the fall, creekside vine maples paint ochre hues into the verdant landscape.
For those wishing to camp, potential sites are just below the start of this trail at Dismal Draw, 3.5 miles up lower Barnes Creek and next to Happy Lake Creek, 2.9 miles past the Aurora Divide intersection.
After 5.2 miles and 3300 feet of climbing, the trail peters out in a dark stand of stunted western hemlock on the ridge top. Just before reaching this terminus, the trail forks, leading steeply up to the left. Take this trail another half mile up to the top of Lookout Dome.
The trail winds around the backside and up to the top of the dome, where the intrepid hiker can enjoy cliffside views of the Hughes Creek valley sprawling below. Baldy Ridge extends rocky and cliff-faced to the North, the Elwha River meanders far below, and behind, to the West, one can see the Barnes Creek watershed draining down toward a glimpse of Lake Crescent through the trees.
It's possible to day hike this trail from Storm King Ranger station to the top and back but, at around 20 miles round trip, this trail is much more doable as an overnight backpacking trip.
Dispatchers have a lot of options when it comes to routing trains through this busy junction within the busy Nuremberg rail yard.

I shot in DX mode which crops away the extra pixels and takes me 1.5X closer while allowing for up to 7 FPS with the Nikon D810's Nikon MB-D12 Battery Grip using the 8 AA battery option! 8 Duracells took me through around 3,000 shots no problem--maybe more! I was shooting at the equivalent of 900mm with the 1.5x crop factor! Pretty close! Had I gone with the Nikon D4s, I would have gotten 12 fps, but no DX crop factor, as the sensor has only around 24mp, compared to the d810's 36 megapixels! Sure the larger pixel size on the Nikon D4s full frame sensor comes in handy indoors or at night, but in the bright sun, there's more than enough light for the smaller pixels in crop mode! Sure we lose some pixels from the outer edges when shooting in DX crop mode, but most of those pixels would be cropped away in Lightroom anyway. And the smaller files make the memory cards last longer, while also upping the FPS to 7 shots per second! Not quite 12 FPS, but still awesome and enough I felt!

Some US Army infantry dismounted from their Matvee while on patrol in support of NATO's Stabilization Force in Eastern Europe (SFOR). Much of the American contingent of this peacekeeping mission is a armored brigade intended to deter aggressive action by the revanchist Yugoslav People's Army, so separate infantry brigades are often rotated into theater to better provide a lighter-weight way to interface with the local population. Options such as the Reconfigurable Integrated Weapons Platform are an outstanding choice for this job, and provide units quite a bit of flexibility on what kind of weaponry they bring to the field.
