Sixteen Year 9 girls from 13 Hampshire schools undertook a residential work experience programme from the 16-20 February 2009 on HMS Bristol. The girls and three staff from the Women in Science and Engineering campaign visited HMS Sultan on the 17 and 19 February 2009. The aim of the visit was for the girls to have an oppurtunity for practical experience in engineering and to meet female engineer role models. This visit also aimed to increase the girls interest in engineering and inspire them to take engineering up as a career.

Saturday was the day of the annual 'Scott Kelby photowalk', and I bagged myself a place on the Manchester tour being run by David Johnson (the most excellent MaxBlack on Flickr, check his work out here - www.flickr.com/people/maxblackphotos/)

It was a great day just to stroll about town and spend some time with other photographers, some I know from the past, some I'd not met before.

We were set some tasks, one of which was to get portraits of your fellow group members... so I have a variety of shots to meet that particular requirement....

Bhakti Summer Sangha 2016

The second year of the Bhakti Summer Sangha was a great success, as it gave an oppurtunity to the younger generations to explore spirituality and practice activities such as meditation, kirtan, satsang, seva, and much more among their own peers.

The Summer Sangha has a schedule built around the 9 forms of Bhakti, so that each day the kids and young adults a taste of each of the forms of devotion. The participants are getting a chance to participate in workshops on music, on meditation, and throughout everything, on building a deeper and sweeter relationship to God - in the Guru, in His many many avatars, in the people, and especially within themselves.

I've taken the oppurtunity to get some background uni reading done on the flight to london. I'm reading the veru accesible "Barth for armchair theologians" by John Franke, its a concise introduction which even includes illustrations (that is my kind of theology!).

Franke Details Barth's famous depart from liberal theology which was, amongst many other influences, when Barth learnt his former revered german proffesors had publically condoned the german effort in WWI.

Franke goes on to explain Barth's other impetus in the depart from liberal theology which is what particularly interested me.

"For barth, the fatal flaw in the libera approach to theology was its limited ability to speak of God in ways which challenged the assumptions and presuppositions of a particular culture. While liberals could speak with conviction concerning matters such as religion, history, culture, and ethics, their approach to theology did not provide them with the necessary resources to speak about God in ways that called into question and challenged the status quo"

I wonder whether just under 100 years later the same critique can be levelled at liberal theology?

Although I am often impressed at how liberal theology manages to engage culture specifically on ethical grounds with more of a neighbour love principle in place, I can't help but feel it is deficient in its ability to stand apart from the world as a witness to a coming kingdom.

For me the continuation of liberal theology outside the ivory tower of the academy is in part due to the lack of vigour in which those in my own traditon of evangelical theology have engaged social justice issues and sought to think theologically and compassionately about the individuals involved in the theological ethical issues which they engage whilst adhering to an evangelical doctrinal basis.

Are we starting to see movement on these issues? If so, then I think we still probably have a long way to go.

Today I went for a little plane ride over the Madison area, and for dirt cheap at that. Today was the 50th annual "Waunakee Fly-In Breakfast," back home and I couldnt pass this oppurtunity up after missing out on the helicopter ride at the state fair. For tthe cheap price of $31 dollars, one could enjoy all the yummy pancakes, sausage, and orange juice to their hearts desire. But on top of great food, the $31 covered also a 25-30 minute flight with a local pilot: really $25 bucks for a flight? How do they do I dont know, but I knew that this year after battling rain and haze for a good picture at the fly-in I had to go again.

After doing a bit of research last night after loading my picture, I found that the best advice is to use a prime lens and use fast shutter speeds. Obviously being up higher in the sky, although not actually much closer to the sun then being on the ground: I found it quite easy that the early morning sun helped with faster shutter speeds. Shooting around f2.8-4 on my 50mm f2 AI kept my shutter speed up but also maintained a great amount of sharpness and detail in my shots. I was quite impressed as well, because I didnt change my lens once during the entire flight!

Last year I shot the capitol so this year I tired to shoot some different angles, and I was pleased with the way the world looked thru the lens. Going more for the shapes and curvatures of landscapes, we passed over Madison West High School. Which just happens to be next to one of the largest cemetarys in the Madison area, I only managed to snap one frame and kept the camera to my eye after words not even bothering to look at my shots. When I finally got home tonight, I started to to see that most of my shots of Madison from the sky were cliche and overdone which although it is something that i havent shot, others have seen it. The cemetary shot popped out with a black and white edit in photoshop elements 7, although very small the shadows created by the early morning glow really popped out. The curve of the road in the corner, or the diagonal cutting thru the frame. Or if you follow the road from bottum left and find the dead tree shadow on the road, just way too cool!

What really kills me the most is the high school practice fields are not far, as seen upper right hand corner. Interesting that the school would decide to build/play so close to the cemetary. Obviously one came before the other, but maybe at one time one was initially smaller and then grew larger? All in all a good day!

Taken at the start of the womens tour 2014 in Oundle, Unfortunatley (or fortunatly dependant of your view point) I got stuck in a traffic jam due to the rolling road closures for 20min, so took the oppurtunity to grab the camera and get some shots as they passed by

While photographing another subject this guy decided to land on this perch only after I walked away from the post. Snapped photos as I gradually walked closer and closer to him. Perch is a little bit overpowering but these guys are a tough challenge here in Ohio so I was more then happy with this oppurtunity. Taken in Bath Nature Preserve, Ohio.

As part of my job, I got the oppurtunity to spend 4.5 months in Abu Dhabi, UAE. On one of my side trips I came across some camels in the desert on the side of the road between Dubia and Al-Ain. They were miles from anyone. They had there front feet hobbled so they could not wander. We saw others that were free to move about. But I stopped to take a few images of this group.

The film processor in Abu Dhabi messed up this roll - almost all the photos had a shadow down the middle.

From London. I attended the University of Richmond in Virginia from 16th August to the 16th December 2015 and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

One of the lovliest thing the Richmond office of International Education offered was the oppurtunity to join host family. For me, I was, along with three other english girls, partnered with Betty-Ann, who had graduated from Richmond all the way back in 1949! (Then she graduated from Westhampton College). This photo was taken at Monticello - Thomas Jefferson's Virginia Home, a wonderful excursion I, and my Host sister in this photo with me, were able to take thanks to having such a wonderful Host mum who wanted to take us everywhere to see everything. It was a wonderful, interesting day, and I couldn't have done it without Betty!

In the night, after work, I went to the place where greenpeace undertook an action against a proposed coal powerplant. I had the oppurtunity to take one single shot there, before a car stopped with two security guards inside asking me all kinds of questions. They made it sound as if it was illegal to take pictures from a public road. They asked me for my ID, so i refused as they had no right to ask (only police may). Well basically my big mouth almost got me into trouble as reinforcements arrived and later a police car. I handed my drivers license to them and they went to check it in the car. By then I had packed my camera in my car again and wanted to leave basically. They refused to give my license back and I objected. Being up against 3 guards and 2 officers was kinda intimidating, but luckily it ended up allright. They told me they would contact me soon. I'm curious about it, only time will tell.

Fall on the Colorado State University campus. This may be the last great oppurtunity to enjoy our great autum colors.
