The weak shall fall to Hell! For the strong are always beautiful!
Let's have fun! 😉
When a few flowers died in each of two bunches of flowers I was given, I merged them together and think the colours go well.
Day 17 post-op yesterday and I took a walk down the road, with Ray and 2 crutches for company (although I can now manage fine with 1 indoors) my target being to the local church and back. It was slow, the traffic a bit noisy to somebody unaccustomed to walking out but there is a handy seat near the church.
Once home, Ray checked the distance and found I had walked just over half a mile - well pleased!
The windmills are the quintessential features of Mykonos landscape. There are plenty of them that have become a part and parcel of Mykonos. Visitors to Mykonos can see the windmills irrespective of the locale. From a distance, one can easily figure out the windmills, courtesy of their silhouette. They are primarily concentrated in the neighborhood of Chora and some are also located in and around Alevkantra. These innovative wheels were primarily used for crushing agricultural yields. In all, there were 16 such windmills in operation.
They are conspicuous by their snow-white color, spherical shape with the customary pointed roof made of the finest variety of wood. In the good old days, they were wind operated as Mykonos is renowned for their gusty wind, which continues to blow even today. The Windmills of Chora and the ones at Ano Mera were a great boon to the people of those localities and they were primarily used for grinding the agricultural products that were meant to be transported to places outside Mykonos.
As of now, with the advent of modernity, the windmills are no longer operational. But they continue to be a symbol of Mykonos rich virile past. Being hundreds of years old, most of the windmills have been thoroughly renovated and some have even been converted into museums, the most famous being the Bonis Windmill.
Mykonos windmills are a living testimony of the island's use of innovation when it came to tapping the enormous power of the wind to grind Mykonos agricultural produces.
Moored barges.
There is a major operation underway to cap and landscape the old Victorian/Edwardian rubbish tip at this site. The tides are exposing and eroding the old waste that is then carried away and deposited throughout the area.
The old beached barge (left) has been mostly buried in the last few years, I once found a pair of old flying goggles in the mud beside it (1990's).

We stumbled by chance on a coast guard rescue operation while visiting Las Teresitas.
Helicopter and boats were searching around a specific spot on the coast.
We checked later and found out that tragically two young swimmers got trapped in a small cave and drowned before help arrived.
I like the new bridge, the steps are all the the place though and after the hip operation I take them rather slowly, another fall would not be sensible.
First time in ages we have been to town, so sad. So many shops are empty. The town looks sad and scruffy. Not one bread shop selling fancy bread and cakes. We had to walk to Iceland to get ordinary sliced bread. No fancy chocolate shop and the only place to look at clothes was charity shops. New shops opened in a couple of places. Two with Liquor in big letters over the top and a pawn shop.

In September 2008, driver for Yellow Freight lines waits as the Manufacturer's Railway ease down 2nd St.
The "Manny" as it was known, had operated since 1887 serving owner Anheuser-Busch along with other customers in the lower downtown area of St. Louis. It eased operations three years later, in 2011. Some of the railroad was taken over by Foster Townsend Rail Logistics, but this street running up 2nd St. was not included. While some of the street trackage is still in place as of summer 2023, it's in reality an island of track awaiting removal.
On the rubber tire side of this scene, Yellow Freight lines, which started operations in 1939, ceased operations in August 2023 following bankruptcy proceedings.

These boats remain stuck in the mud of Chichester Harbour although the tide is coming in to release them. About two hours after this photograph was taken all of the green areas in the foreground and in the middle of the shot were under several feet of water. High tide - an amazing natural phenomenon which takes place twice a day and has done so for millions if not billions of years!
Chichester Harbour has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Behind it are some of the hills of the South Downs National Park which only came into operation in 2011.

The first depot was built on this site in 1905 when the Louisville & Nashville Railroad Line came to Foley. The railroad was once known as the Bay Minette and Fort Morgan Railroad. At that time, logging was an important industry in this area and the railroad was built to help move the timber out of the area.
At one time, there were two trains per day going in each direction - one to Foley and the other to Bay Minette. These trains were wood burners. They had fairly high smokestacks in order to deaden the live sparks that could cause fires in this timber area. There was also wire netting stretched across the smokestack to help keep the cinders from flying into the woods.
Wood racks were found along the railway so that the wood burners would always have a supply of wood. The settlers would cut and haul their wood to these racks. When the wood was loaded into the train’s tinderbox, the engineer would sign a “wood ticket.” The settler would turn in this ticket for cash.
The trains would also bring in passengers from the North who were coming to Baldwin County to buy land and build homes. In Bay Minette travelers would transfer from the main line to a small coach. This small passenger train became known as “The Pine Knot Special.” The train would make many stops along the 36-mile trip from Bay Minette to pile on wood or to let people off near their farms.
Foley became a growing and thriving community. The railroad served as a means to get the various crops to market. Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes, tobacco and cucumbers were some of the main crops that were shipped on the railroad.
The first depot that was built in 1905 burned to the ground in 1908. It was rebuilt and served as the center of activity for the community for many years.
In 1971, word was received that L & N was going to discontinue service to Foley and would destroy the building. John Snook, owner of Gulf Telephone Company bought the building for $1.00. He cut the depot and the freight area into two parts and moved them to Magnolia Springs. There it stayed for approximately twenty-four years and served as storage for Gulf Telephone. In the early nineties, Mr. Snook deeded the depot back to the city of Foley. In 1995, it was returned to the original site and renovations were begun to make the depot into a museum for the city.
Abandoned sometime ago, was used by an artist for a "1,000 shadows" project - seems to have gone downhill since then.

Operation Barbarossa started on June 22nd, 1941, with the Germans rapidly invading the Soviet Union and decimating Soviet forces in virtually every battle. Hitler's plan was to conquer Eastern Europe for future German colonization called "Lebensraum". Ukraine was especially desired since at the time it was the breadbasket of Europe. When the Germans were conquering the Soviet Union, the Ukrainians and other peoples welcomed them as heroes because of the fact they "freed" them from communist oppression. The Holodomor was fresh in the average Ukrainians memory which was an artificial famine that killed millions and they were still resentful towards Stalin.
Two groups that wanted to take advantage of this moment was the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) which was into Italian fascism, was led by Andriy Melnik and the younger more violent OUN-B, was National Socialist which was led by Stepan Bandera. They originally existed because they were angry that Poland was "occupying" the province of Galicia which is claimed by both Poles and Ukrainians (even to this day).
However, the Ukrainians would learn that the Nazis were replacing one form of oppression with another. Hitler hated Slavic peoples and wanted them enslaved, "transferred" (possibly to Siberia) or at worst exterminated. When the OUN declared an independent Ukrainian state, that was shut down as quickly as possible. The Nazis committed atrocities against the Ukrainians which soon led to the growth of more partisan groups and led to some joining the Soviet army by the time they started "liberating" it from the Nazis.
In a last ditch effort, the Nazis freed imprisoned Ukrainian nationalist leader, Stepan Bandera to inspire the Ukrainians but that ultimately failed. Even during his imprisonment all the OUN-B did was mass murder Poles in the provinces of Galicia and Volhynia. Today he's seen as a controversial figure as he is popular in Western Ukraine which is full of Catholic Ukrainians and hated in Eastern Ukraine which is full of Orthodox Russians.

Natur-Park Südgelände:
Natur-Park Südgelände is a public park located in the Schöneberg district in the Berlin borough of Tempelhof-Schöneberg. The 18 hectare park is located on the former Tempelhof railway yard. The park is known for its mix of wild nature, decaying railway facilities and art.
History
In 1889 the Tempelhof marshalling yard was built on the site and extended several times until the 1930s. A Bahnbetriebswerk was constructed in 1931. After the closure of the Berlin Anhalter Bahnhof in 1952 the western section of the marshalling yard was closed. Nature began reclaiming the disused yard and lines. However, the eastern half of the yard remained in use for limited shunting operation with the Bahnbetriebswerk continuing to be used by Deutsche Reichsbahn. During the late 1970s construction of a new freight station on the site was proposed; however these proposals met community resistance and were finally abandoned in 1989. In 1995 Deutsche Bahn donated the site to the Berlin city government as compensation for other environmental impacts caused by the company. The state-owned Grün Berlin was responsible for the expansion, and received financial assistance from the Allianz Umweltstiftung (Allianz Environmental Foundation).
The park was officially opened in 1999 and was a project of the Expo 2000. Thx to Wikipedia!

Almost done for the season! All the volunteers and most of the staff are finished for this year. Just the shippers remain, but have a break right now until January 7th. The remainder of all the shoebox gifts are destined for West Africa. We will start to ship on January 9th. I will be part of this, along with my son.
Happy New Year, my Flickr friends! I will be out of the country on a road trip until January 6th.

Hard to tell here, but the light is extremely low in this very cool old stone recreation center, so hard to get descent photos for me.
Annual Operation Wildlife Eagle Days at Wyandotte County Park. Wonderful organization that takes in injured and abandoned wildlife and nurses them back to health then releases back into the wild. Some that can't be released participate as educational ambassadors for their species.
In organising this stealth operation times were agreed, watches synchronised and 4 troops would meet at the given time.
Officer Dixon and Fly by the seat of his pants Pedlar had assembled at the RV point, yet no signs of the other 2 soldiers.
Polite whistling was exchanged between OD & FP to while away a bit of time, but still no show.
So the two dedicated soldiers decided to put on their combat equipment, namely wellies and set off alone on this mission.
As the two soldiers were almost approaching the venue to be photographed, their attention was drawn to a lady several metres up the cliff face sitting at a table of the Port William pub, waving her arms in an uncoordinated manner, shouting “get up here, my glass is empty again, your round”.
So the two soldiers duly obliged where they joined Christine and Dave.
With glasses charged a thoroughly enjoyable 4 way conversation ensued in one of the most idyllic drinking locations on the north coast of Cornwall.
Following a whole load of banter it was felt while we were still able to walk we had better head down and see what we could load onto our memory cards at Trebarwith Strand.
So good to meet up again Christine, Dave and Mark.
Hope you all have a great weekend out there in Flickerland.
I so appreciate you viewing my photos and leaving the comments and banter

Paris. 2017
After last year’s terrorist attacks on Paris, the French government launched Operation Sentinelle, in which combat troops patrol streets and protect key sites around the cities. The now permanent presence of thousands of soldiers in full combat gear across Paris and major cities has transformed the image and mood of France.
