Opera @ 寶藏巖河堤

The Opera House took 14 troubled years to build at a cost of $102 million – $95 million more than was anticipated. The short fall was met by lotteries. The Opera House has never been visited by its Danish architect Jorn Utzon, who resigned half way through the project following a clash with the Minister of Public Works.

It opened on the 20th October 1973.

The Opéra Garnier is one of the Paris National Opera's two home venues in the city. It was built from 1861 to 1875 on a commission of Napoleon III, along with the Place de l'Opéra on which the building stands, at the intersection of Boulevard des Capucines and Avenue de l'Opéra. Inaugurated as "le Nouvel opéra de Paris" (the New Paris Opera), the venue became known as the "Palais Garnier" within the first decades of its existence, acknowleding the plans and designs of its architect Charles Garnier. The Paris National Opera now uses the Palais Garnier mainly for ballet. The Palais Garnier also houses the Bibliothèque-Musée de l'Opéra de Paris (Paris Opera Library-Museum), although the Library-Museum is no longer managed by the Opera and is part of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.

Beijing opera, more commonly known as Peking opera to westerners, is deemed the national opera of China. The accompanying music, singing and costumes are all fascinating and artistic.

Got some nice reflections

Acrobatic opera performances in Chengdu, Sichuan China. The guy "wielding" the huge flag would swing and whirl it while the other guy does somersaults and stuff over the flag!!

A pretty imposing building, it's very impressive inside too.

Crawley Camera Club members might remember Edwin's photo of this from the inside :-)

1300 seats

Note the seriously overhanged seats at the rear of the balconies. Certainly the only solution to fit 1300 seats in such a small an intimate space. For those seating at the rear (under the overhangs), the feeling is not that intimate though...
