After working inside with artificial lighting, we moved down the road to a favorite site. Working out of doors under natural light was a challenge. I needed to find somewhere that the sun could be controlled. So we worked predominantly in the shadow areas.

For this series, I am working in muted colors and layered mono-tones. I hope these strike the right balance between the typical styles that folks tend to shoot in, and something that bubbles up through the multitudinous layers of my artistic being.

This morning I spotted a young person who carried a bag with a message I connected strongly with.

After I processed the image, I realized that the hyper-reality of the situation was exactly how I felt about the scene as it played out before me at 7:06am.

In addition to the tone-mapper application, I used the Gimp to get things the way I wanted. Powerful combination that these open source tools provide, eh?

I love it!

Quari Mission ruins.

I like ruins you can see peaking over a horizon, even if the horizon isn't that far away.

These places have limited hours so even with hours of daylight left in March we had arrived too late the afternoon before, however, there are several rural decay type shots to be had in the area and if you're lucky some buckhorn antelope here and there.

Its been very interesting to work through the sequence of images for the Bogvillians. They have the "look" that I have been dying to photograph and work with artistically. Alas, it takes more than just good subject matter to express the kinds of things I am after. Watching from a third person position, I see that I need to take the technology, learn it, understand it, and apply it. However, its so easy to get stuck there thinking that technology will "save" an image. It doesn't work that way for me. I find that I also need to let the mind's worrying and fretting over technology find another place to "be" while I'm actually working an image. I see that I must also work to allow my whole being to participate. I can't really explain it, except that I feel more "open" and connected on more levels when I work to stay in the body and to share "space" with my mind. Oh, and I find I get the best results when I let the mind "do its thing", but not to let it take over the process.

First bull snake we saw on our vacation, this one up in Mesa Verde.

It was crossing the street so I stopped to block traffic and to take some shots as it crossed.

This was the sharpest of those taken of the face. A bit out of focus on the face.

Open Source Embroidery: Craft and Code

Facilitated by Ele Carpenter at HTTP Gallery 27 May - 15 June

Early morning at Wupatki National Monument somewhere near the Citadel ruins.

There are so many things to learn and experience. Each step I take seems to go deeper into the kinds of images I was only in my wildest dreams ever hoping to create.

Has anyone mentioned that image making can be fun? LOL!

It was cold and dark. This image was much darker before processing as was the sky. I will probably fix this back to its original darkness if I can do so without losing too much detail.

In the distance you could see a flame from some gas tower.(outside this shot to the left)

This picture is warped with a filter in the gimp. The gimp is a free open source capable of just about anything and everything you would do with photoshop.

This is the second and last Bull Snake we saw on our vacation. This one was crossing the street down at Coronado State Monument Just north of Bernalillo, NM. Bernalillo is just north of ABQ and not too far south from Sante Fe.

Once again I parked to block traffic and took some shots while I was at it.

As you might have noticed, the main drivers have been removed. They were sitting on the floor and were being prepared for a run up to Vancouver, BC as part of a holiday celebration.

After creating the brightness mapped version of this image, I thought I'd try the local "microcontrast" enhancement approach to tone masking. I used the Gimp and my own Sepia sample colors.

I think the contrast is nice. Nothing too dark nor too light. It's definitely a different image when deploying tone mapping as opposed to brightness mapping.

My favorite cemetery called to me earlier this past Spring. I wanted to see the massive and very beautiful Copper Beech in full leaf. I wanted to study the headstones for their bas-relief and details. I wanted to enjoy the peace and quiet of this old place.

The Caterpillar and Alice looked at each other for some time in silence: at last the Caterpillar took the hookah out of its mouth, and addressed her in a languid, sleepy voice.

`Who are YOU?' said the Caterpillar.

I took photos of these in the morning. By lunchtime the leafblower crew had come by and all the 'shrooms were gone. I'm glad I grabbed my camera to capture the fun before they leapt into the afterlife...

I have wanted to photograph city hall for its interesting entry. For me, the best time was to capture the pre-dawn light as the morning sky bathed the stonework in soft light.

... and so it begins.

I have several renditions of this, so if this one doesn't "work", let me know and I'll post other version.

After photographing the new mural across the street, I took a very quick moment and grabbed a few images of this really huge Cadillac that we'd parked in front of.

For this I varied the tone-mapping parameters and played with the 3 image layer alignment from handheld AEB. I think this will work.

Now... off to Paris and London sometime soon... handheld DHR will be possible... just need to figure out if the 40D needs to go... or if a new G9 would be more appropriate (ie: better hidden from the throngs and masses of humanity)...

I love the way the tone mapping application takes an otherwise blank sky and reveals the subtle texture. Similarly, the way the software works on metal is just astounding. It used to take me a month of work to get this kind of detail using traditional film pin-registration techniques.

More images have crossed the vast divide between the Ages in our incredible Multiverse. These just arrived.

I have stumbled upon something of incredible rarity. Images from across the gap between various Ages have, unexpected, become available to me. They have withstood the incredible stresses of Multiverse time sharing to be revealed here for perhaps the first time in this Post Modern Age. The scroll work looks to be mid-1800's French, perhaps from Paris.

I enjoyed working in the freezing cold. The snow was fun to watch as it fell. The temperatures helped make the steam from SP4449 really stand out against the sky.

For this series I wanted to continue with the hyper-reality enhanced micro-contrast work. These represent 3 images of a +/-2EV spread, tone mapped, sample colorized, and then selective colorized on top of all that.

For me, this is what photography and image making should be: Absolute unabashed fun!

I wanted to see what happened if I were more careful with my panorama scene capture and then processed the images using Canon's Stitch application. Well, it's still not what I was looking for.

Perhaps I used too wide an optic and the software can't handle the distortions? Or maybe their stitch software just sucks? Who knows?

Anyways, here's a couple images from the roundhouse.

Here is the second part of a little test that I'm running with everyone. These are the tone-mapped versions of the "straight" photos I just posted a little while ago.

I will post these new images to the same groups that I posted the first batch. Then I will watch to see the number of views. This may give me feedback as to how people respond to images.

Thanks for participating in my little experiment.

This is one of the most famous lighthouses in the USA. So I was reluctant to photograph it. I had this idea that I couldn't do something uniquely mine.

Well, when we drove by, my wife suggested we stop and I could try my hand at making an image or two anyway.

So... here it is... for better or worse...

These are the last of the portraits from the 2008 event that I'll post. Soon, with luck, I'll be able to share some battle scenes.

Out by Picket Post Mountain.

This critter lay right in the middle of the old highway looking much like a stick, terrible survival strategy.

I stopped in time to be able to get a few shots while it kept on playing stick.

Then the monsoon rain hit and I got back in the truck and waited for the snake to get out of the road.

It did so and we all went on with our lives.

As I continue with my hand-bound book project, I get excited about the possibilities. Here, for the first time, I have the ability to collect a few images, print them to 100 percent cotton rag (dual sided), stitch, and then bind into attractive books some of my photographic art. The results are looking good, thusfar.

I was in a workshop all last weekend. The place the workshop was held was just across the street from the Hand Built Bicycle Show at the Convention Center.

Finally, during lunch break on Sunday, I couldn't stand it any longer and headed over to the show. I went up to the window to buy a ticket and started counting out my change. D*mn! It costs $18 (yes, EIGHTEEN BUX!!) to get in and all I had was $12 and twenty minutes. No joy.

So, instead of oogling all the great stuff inside, I wandered around outside and snapped a few images. There was some fun stuff out there.

I visited the Roundhouse yesterday. I took the Canon 40D, three lenses, and a huge tripod. I wanted to begin working with high dynamic range images of the kind found in some of the HDR pools here on Flickr.

This image is a three layer +/-1 auto exposure bracketed image. This deploys the Gimp's capability to tone map from the over and under exposure layers in the "micro" contrast regions of the image. On the over/under exposed layers I ran desaturation, then edge detect Sobel filter, and finally a small amount of Gaussian blur (to keep the ripples to a minimum). The effect is more subtle than the brightness mapped image. I believe this is where some folks go wild with HDR to come up with false colors and extreme renditions of original scenes.

Around 1625 spanish conquest brings christianity to the native americans in the area. Forcing them to build large churches in the area and to fill their own spiritual "kivas" with sand. There was an uprising of the natives who killed missionaries, native converts, spanish settlers and burned the churches. The uprising was put down, leaders were hung and the natives were re-enslaved to rebuild the churches. It was all downhill from there for the natives as spanish rule, disease, drought and raiders from the plains took their toll on a once thriving people.
