This year I'm using a different film format each month, starting with the smallest and working my way up through the sizes. The format for November is Polaroid SX-70, which has a slightly larger image area than last month's 6x9cm 120 format.

This was taken with a Polaroid 1000 camera (known as Polaroid Onestep in the US), it uses SX-70 film, which is once more available, having been revived by The Impossible Project a few years ago.

The SX-70 is a folding single lens reflex Land Camera first produced by the Polaroid Corporation in 1972. It was the first instant SLR in history, and the first camera to use Polaroid's new integral print film, which developed automatically without the need for intervention from the photographer.

The SX-70 has a folding body design, a 4-element 116mm f/8 glass lens, and an automatic exposure system. The camera allows manual focus as close as 10.4 inches (26.4cm), and has a shutter speed range from 1/175s to more than 10 seconds. This makes the camera incredibly versatile, and it can be used in pretty much any situation, from portraits to long exposure photographs.

This type of SX-70 is a "SONAR Onestep". Quite literally it is one of the best model of SX-70 cameras available.

The main feature of this amazing model is its AUTOMATIC FOCUSING system. When the shutter button is pressed halfway, a series of ultrasonic chirps is emitted from an electrostatic transducer located under a gold plate above the lens. These chirps travel to the subject and bounce back to the camera’s receiver, alerting the camera to the subject’s distance, and the lens is turned via a motor to focus accordingly.

Don't think for a second that this automatic focusing is gimmicky! Simply put, its one of the most accurate automatic focusing systems ever made, and will outperform most new digital SLRs. It can focus from infinity down to 26cm in under 1 second!

Of course, you can over-ride the auto-focus and focus manually with the touch of a button if you want to.

The SONAR SX-70 models also features a tripod socket as well as a neck strap, to make the camera more portable to carry around. Most standard SX-70 models did not have these features.

This particular model is the rare "BC Series" version. The BC Series was the name designated to cameras specially branded for sale at USA K-Mart stores. Although we do not think of K-Mart as a very serious brand these days, back in the 70's K-Mart was actually quite heavily involved with photography, selling many lenses, cameras and flashes under the brand name "Focal". It differed from standard models in its color scheme, which featured a mix of both black and chrome look panels and a unique, grippy pebbled rubber leatherette.

Sadly though the original rubber leatherette does not usually stand the test of time, and most BC Series coverings crumble away in your hands. The original leather on this camera was crumbling away, so I replaced the original covering with genuine pebbled black cowhide leather, to give it the luxurious finish it deserves while maintaining the originality of the color scheme.

Broken Polaroid SX-70 Land Camera Sonar OneStep -

Here is my SX-70 Sonar that I broke during Roidweek. I found a beautiful replacement so now I can look back at this train wreak camera and start thinking of what sort of mods I can do to it. At least my flash didn't break.

Sometimes, I want to capture only the sky because it is clearly blue.

However, capturing only the sky is a little tedious and difficult task to carry out.

So, I was looking for the consistency, and I found the long, long, plain tree and captured it together to make the space more stationery.

My SX-70 Sonar stopped working. Well, the nifty sonar auto focus did anyway, manual focus works fine.

I thought it would be a simple fix, and opened up the housing. Nothing looks wrong mechanically, so I guess it's the electronics.

This is 1970's electronics (just look at the big hunk of a motor), but still way beyond me. Fortunately, I know how to check for simple things like cold solder joints and all that electrojigglyjumbobooga stuff. Yeah!

left side: me in 1982 or '83, taken by one of my parents. i'm holding up two fingers, which, initially, led me to assume that i was two at the time; but on the back of the photograph, my mum wrote "3" underneath my name. anyway, i'm a little blonde kidlet in that one. :)

right side: me, now (2007). the hair's a bit darker, i'm a bit older, and i'm wearing glasses.

either way, i'm posing with the same camera--a polaroid onestep land camera, first manufactured in the late 1970s. my parents have had it for longer than i've been alive. recently, i got some sx-70 blend film for it, so i can have a little fun. whee!

edit (feb. 12, 2008): i suppose with polaroid discontinuing all their film, this "then and now" takes on a whole new meaning...a very bittersweet one, at that. *nods*

Week 25 is dedicated to the Impossible Project. TIP was formed to bring back Instant Integral Film after Polaroid stopped producing it. They went as far as purchasing the last factory in the Netherlands.

PX70 Push, was the second released of colour film from Impossible. Personally I could never get this one to work right but I suspect there's something up with my camera.

This is another full page advertisement from "The New Yorker" magazine dated May, 21st 1979 for the Polaroid SX-70 instant film and announcing the "Polaroid SX-70 Sonar OneStep" camera.

One of the main breakthroughs with the SX-70 series instant film was that it was an Integral film (develops automatically) that had improved color saturation over earlier pack films.

The unique feature of the "Polaroid SX-70 Sonar OneStep" was that it featured an automatic focus; while other OneStep cameras were either manual or fixed-focus. This was achieved via a miniature "Sonar" device, which would emit sound waves from the camera, and by measuring the delay of the reflection the distance between the camera and the subject was calculated. Then the shutter speed and focal length of the lens was adjusted automatically. At the time (c. late 1970s) automatic focus would have been considered very high-tech.

I tried to capture the photo of Sydney City from Darling Harbor side.

Um. I like this trimming of it, and also, I feel nostalgic about the color of the reflection on the sea. This place is very close to my house, so I come here very often. Whenever I come here, I feel very relieved and I can stay away from the PC and IT things, that are my work, peacefully !!!
