An estimated 15 million devotees and tourists joined the annual "traslacion" or the procession of the Black Nazarene. The event commemorates the "translacion" or the moving of the image solemnly to the minor basilica.
Devotees are determined to touch, wipe and hold the image of the Black Nazarene because of their deep belief and devotion to the image. Even if the devotees are used to crossing the old route, they followed the new, prescribed route in the end. Like most of the incidents in the past years, there were a number of incidents of suffocation, minor injuries, cuts and bruises--a far cry from what should be a solemn, holy event. —

I've always been fond of this candid portrait I took of George Saunders several years ago. I think he looks like a kind person here -- and from everything I could tell that night, he seemed to be one. Saunders' site

On their footpath to the North of Greece, refugees are looking for places to sleep. They break in empty housing containers in camps like here at Filippiada, located in a remote region in Epirus.
Since there is no police and no security staff from afternoon until morning, inhabitants of the 260-people-camp have no means to close the camp to strangers. "We heard them in the night. We could tell they were from Syria and Iraq. They had little cans of tear gas, so we were afraid to talk to them", a young Afghan father of two little children says.
The next morning, the burglars are gone to continue their way to the border to Albania or Macedonia, disappearing in the forests and mountains - they are using the new "Balkan route".

In just one of the buildings, 475 families occupies 27 unfinished floors.
Kids play and run.
Clotheslines on the outside of the building, without any protection from falling down and in front of the entire city.
Windows, with breathtaking views, of one of the biggest and most populated cities on the Planet, made of compensated wood or sticks, even at the 27th floor.
People that use strength and organization to impose their reality, to a society that doesn’t care to listen.

The legendary Brooklyn Bridge. Damian tells me it's more impressive than London Bridge. I wouldn't really know. What I do know is that it was fun to shoot and even more fun to walk. It was a blast to tour the sights of NYC, places we've heard about, read about and seen on the silver screen all our lives.
I was lucky to have Jahrensy and Damian along for the ride on this NYC adventure. See what they have to say about it.

The Geeks, Itaewon, Seoul, South Korea.
On assignment for Groove Magazine.
I am still lagging behind - months and months behind, in fact - when it comes to posting published material and/or fun stuff. By June 2012 I should be back on track.
I went out to shoot The Geeks the weekend before Megan and I left Korea because I didn't have enough to do... (right!) but mostly because I like shooting and writing for Groove. Good people, that bunch. Likewise The Geeks are a good bunch. For a hardcore band they are pretty even tempered and never once hit me, kicked me or threw me into the crowd. I'll say I was a little disappointed.
Megan helped me shoot these guys on a scorching hot day in Itaewon. The indoor space I had booked bailed on us so we had to do this on the street. That meant tiny apertures, tons of power out of the flashes and heavy duty neutral density filtration. I came away with something close to what I had envisioned but this is a concept I'll be revisiting again and again until I get it right.
