"When you ask a person to jump, his attention is mostly directed
toward the act of jumping and the mask falls so that the real person appears."
-Philippe Halsman
Halsman was a famed Life photographer who towards the end of his
career would customarily ask his subjects if they would like to
jump for him. My particular favorite image of his is the Duke and
Duchess of Windsor (1956) jumping.
I have been asking people to stick their tongue out
for a picture. I've been doing it for some time - back to the
old days when you used "film". For convience I have only searched
my collection of digital images, and come up with the following
mosaic of images. It includes family, friends. acquaintances, and even
relative strangers - people who I met briefly and never learned their name.
As far as I know there is no one famous. (Halsman took pictures of royalty
and celebrities - like Marilyn Monroe.)
I am not sure what sticking your tongue out symbolizes anymore.
A little research on the internet turned up that "Sticking out
the tongue is still a polite sign of greeting in northern India and Tibet"
And a lot of SMS/chat/email icon references...
:o)Sticking your tongue out
:-P tongue hanging out in anticipation
:-r sticking tongue out
:-P sticking out tongue (symbol of disrespect)
:-q trying to touch its tongue to its nose
It is not clear if in the act of sticking their tongue out
for a photo if the "mask falls" and the real person shows
throuh or not - clearly I'll need to do some more research.
(Comments on this preliminary effort are welcome.)
There are stories to go with these pictures. (aren't there always?)
My Uncle stuck his tongue out without prompting. I sent my Aunt a cabinet
card of my Uncle with a photoshopped in tongue piercing.
Evidently the family laughed about it all weekend (though it is unclear
what response my Uncle had - we haven't spoken since I sent his family the
image over a year ago :-)
The "Office Space Compliant tongue piercing" (B&W with
Red push pin "tongue piercing") was a setup shot, and thanks to
my co-worker for modeling. We actually used a green push pin with
the pin cut off to do some non-enterprise critcal activities during
that work day. Inspired by the movie Office Space - that captures what
corporate cube culture really is to those of us in the cube- we
created this particular piece of flair, only a few more pieces
of flair and we'll be able to fully express ourselves:-)

Google lounge provided next to their too-small office cubicles. Loads of these primary-color-scheme bouncy balls are throughout the building. Also, the little brightly-colored ball paperweights. This lounge area is also quite tiny, stuffed with this table and apparently a massage-chair. There's one of the many scooters lying on the floor as well.
I used this picture to illustrate my article comparing the office cubicles of Google, next door to us in Texas, with our company's cubes. Google's cubes are much smaller than those of the Superpages operation center next door.
Do not taunt Happy Fun Ball!
Happy Valentine's Day! In an effort to make an annual Etch A Sketch dedicated to love, I present to you the love between Milton and his Swingline stapler.
3 ' X 4' sheet of galvanized steel attached with super-duper double sided adhesive tape. Photos hung with tiny rare earth magnets.
My 99.8% complete office/studio space. It's a quaint lil' 10'x9' room, but i LOVE IT and it's all mine! I still have more organizing to do, and a few more blank spaces on the walls to fill.

My inspiration wall. I didn't realize how many toys I had! Artwork prints by my two FAVORITE artists at the moment, Stella Im Hultberg (www.stellaimhultberg.com) and Audrey Kawasaki (www.audrey-kawasaki.com).
Fun days at the office (beats a cubicle any day). This is where I get to worship robots and work on the AI System that will inherit the Earth (insert cynical laugh here).
If you ever come to Austin, TX and want see some neon signs I got three hints for you: Lamar Boulevard North & South, 1st Street South and--of course--South Congress Avenue. That's easy hunting ground for neon. There's probably more but it'll take awhile until you find 'em all.
This is as you probably can guess the Alligator Grill. It's located at 3003 South Lamar. It's photographed from the south side. If you'd see the north it's partially kaput and reads "All Grill"
This is a HDR image from 5 exposures ranging from 1/4 up to 4 secs. The darkest exposure was finally blended over all bright spots and neons.
Here is a decent shot of my 'office space'. We don't do doors and we also don't really have any desks that don't have curves somewhere. We can thank the design firm that owned this office space before us.
A few mundane details:
I do put my monitors so they are wider than tall; worth it for coding and reading documentation. I also test our application in a lower resolution, so it fits one screen perfectly. (well, and that's the normal resolution of most of our users too)
The desk space on the left side is mostly storage space. I love it as it keeps my space empty. I also keep my office phone over there as I don't use it much.
Yes, I do have two trash cans. Dunno how that happened exactly.
That blue cable along the back wall is my power connection because there is no power plug in the wall on the side my computer sits.
I know the glaring white power cable for my under-shelf lights doesn't fit the decor. I didn't have time to do better, and it works... so it remains.
And yes, that is a Red Swingline stapler. It's the best stapler in the office, so it is often stolen/borrowed. Not sure if that counts as irony or not, but it makes me laugh.
