A group of Prussian reserve officers.

Active officers received their commissions and with that went a certain respect and admiration. Reserve officers received their commissions differently and tried very hard to mimic the regular officers. The reserve commission was considered the “open door” to many advantages in private life. Primarily, they served as One-Year Volunteers (OYV) and were recommended by their company commander as potential reserve officers. Preparation and training consisted of two periods of annual training, each lasting eight weeks. The reserve officer corps of the corps district would vote on them. If accepted they would gain a commission and serve as a Lieutenant of the reserve.

Yesterday, Tuesday 22 January 2019, Greater Manchester Police welcomed 100 new recruits to the Force. The officers were officially sworn in at a formal ceremony attended by Chief Constable Ian Hopkins, senior officers and magistrate Stephen Paine.

The attestation ceremony was held at Stockport Town Hall.

The Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Walter Brett, was also on hand to welcome the new recruits.

Family and friends watched the new officers make their oath to uphold their role with fairness, integrity, diligence and impartiality throughout their time in post.

New recruits have to complete a two year probation period which includes classroom based learning and a year of active patrol. During their training they will have the same of level of authority as regular officers, including the power of arrest.

The new recruits are replacing those who have either retired or left the organisation and therefore helping GMP to maintain current officer numbers.

Corporal Garrett Hull succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained the previous night as he and other members of the Criminal Intelligence Unit attempted to apprehend three armed robbery suspects.

The officers had been conducting surveillance of the three suspects, who had been involved in more than 15 armed robberies in which three people were shot. The suspects entered a bar on the 400 block of West Biddison Street shortly before midnight and robbed the ten patrons at gunpoint. As they fled from the building, the officers attempted to take them into custody.

All three suspects attempted to flee on foot into the surrounding neighborhood. During the foot pursuit, one of the men opened fire, striking Corporal Hull in the head. Other officers returned fire and killed the subject before placing Corporal Hull in a patrol car and transporting him to a hospital.

The other two suspects were apprehended nearby. One suspect was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Corporal Hull succumbed to his wounds the following evening.

Corporal Hull had served with the Fort Worth Police Department for 17 years. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

He was posthumously promoted to the rank of corporal.

An appropriately named room in the 3rd Battalion 112th Armored's Headquarters building in Brownwood, Texas. This building was almost certainly used at some point for law enforcement firearms training, as evidenced by the bullets holes in the wall, and by the spent shell casings and empty ammo boxes that litter the floors. It's been 62 years since it was used for its' original purpose.

Gas Identification officer wearing helmet with two diamonds identifying him, as he holds gas detection paper during gas attack preparations. This picture was taken during the London Blitz, a series of heavy air raids over Britain between 7 September 1940 to 10 May 1941 a total of 8 months of daily bombings. Hitler’s target were industrial buildings and civilian centres, especially those which shared a connection with war effort. Winston Churchill encouraged the population and lead Britain into a defence which became known as the Battle of Britain, where British airplanes, mostly the Supermarine Spitfire, gained popularity. Thus, the Luftwaffe and Luftflotten were ordered to attack London, with the aim of invading the United Kingdom. Hopefully, Operation Barbarossa in 1941 turned Hitler’s attention to Russia.

Although this photo does not have a tax stamp on the back as required between mid 1864 and mid 1866, the fact that the officer depicted is wearing a black crepe arm band indicates it was taken sometime after President Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theater on April 14, 1865. Two days later, on April 16, 1865, the Secretary of War and Lieut.-Gen. Grant issued General Order No. 66 from the War Department, which announced to the troops the death of the President and, among other things, stipulated, "the headquarters of every department, post, station, fort, and arsenal, be draped in mourning for thirty days, and appropriate funeral honors be paid . . . and that the officers of the armies of the United States wear the badge of mourning on their left arm, and on their swords, and the colors of their commands, and regiments be put in mourning for the period of six months."
