Many of Trondheim’s old alleys, known locally as smug, were originally built for easy access between the busy waterfront and merchant houses. Some of them still follow the same paths laid out in the Middle Ages.

This past Saturday was my first time to Robinson Falls near New Florence, PA. While it's a fairly easy 1.5 mile hike through the woods from a parking area, this is one secluded waterfall where you really have to know where it is. Luckily I was able to attain good directions and almost walked right up to it...took a little bit and I ventured off the path for a while accidentally, but I made it.

This is a very nice little swimming hole mostly attended by the locals. I may venture here under high water at some point as while the water level is good here, I would like to see some heavier movement. I also like this location as it's close to Buttermilk Falls in Indiana County.

Coming from Pittsburgh, take US 22 East through Murraysville and Blairsville. Right out of Blairsville, turn right onto Chestnut Ridge Road. Follow Chestnut Ridge for 2.4 miles and bear right onto Muir Road for 1.4 miles. This is on the edge of State Game Lands 153. There is a rutted gravel road that goes down to the right. Follow this gravel road straight back to a parking area for the game lands.

Follow the trail that starts at the gate by the edge of the parking area. Follow this trail until it crosses a creek. A short distance after the stream, a highly visible trail leads down to the left. Follow this trail, being careful to stay on the trail as you will be hiking further than you think. There will be a dense patch of rhododendron on the left as you get closer to the creek. Your eyes will catch something on the hillside across the gorge and you will soon realize it's a wrecked Ford Explorer. A short distance past the Ford, the trail will seem to disappear as it crosses another stream. While the water isn't high, this is difficult to cross as you have to duck under rhododendron and climb down the bank of the stream to cross. On the other side, the trail is non-existent as far as I could tell, but you need to hang a left down the hill, walking parallel to the stream you just crossed. A short hike will land you at the base of the falls.

I don't consider this a difficult hike, but it is a good 3 mile round trip from the parking lot and back again.

Century Farms and Small Town Charm Along The Elkhorn Scenic Byway in Baker County Oregon

Spent a beautiful early summer day exploring small towns and century farms along the Elkhorn Scenic Byway in Baker County. Baker County is home to more than two dozen Oregon Century Farms and Ranches and the Elkhorn Scenic Byway and back roads along the way, are a great way to explore this working landscape of the American West.

Small towns along the way like Haines and Baker City offer visitors a glimpse at small town Americana at its best.

This scenic byway circles through the Elkhorn mountains of Northeast Oregon beginning and ending in Baker City and passing through small towns like Sumpter, Granite, and Haines. The drive is incredibly scenic with wide open panoramic views across the Baker valley, high alpine forests, and following pristine rivers and creeks along the way. In the winter Anthony Lakes is home to Oregon's highest base elevation ski resort. In the summer the pristine alpine lake is a fishing and camping destination. Stunning view of Mt. Ushba (4,710 m / 15,450 ft) in Caucasus mountains, as seen during the trek from Zhabeshi to Adishi, in Svaneti region, northwestern Georgia.

Although it does not rank in the 10 highest peaks of the range, Ushba is known as the "Matterhorn of the Caucasus" for its picturesque, spire-shaped double summit. Due to its steep profile and unstable weather, Ushba is considered by many climbers as the most difficult ascent in the Caucasus.

Luosto is a scenic tourist destination located in the heart of Lapland, Finland. It is particularly popular for its beautiful natural environment, with extensive forests, hills and impressive scenery that attracts visitors in both winter and summer. Luosto is located in the middle of the rugged Lapland landscape. In winter, the forests are covered with a thick layer of snow and offer excellent opportunities for activities such as skiing, snowmobile tours and husky rides. The Pyhä-Luosto National Park is known for its spectacular fjells mountains and untouched nature. Hiking trails lead to the top of the Pyhä-Luosto Fjell, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding wilderness. Luosto is also home to one of the world's only active amethyst mines. Visitors can participate in guided tours and look for amethyst stones themselves, a unique and fun experience. Luosto is an excellent location to see the Northern Lights, especially during the cold winter evenings when the sky is clear. The dancing lights are a magical spectacle that attracts many visitors. In addition to winter sports in Luosto, there are also cozy restaurants and accommodations to enjoy the local cuisine and relax after a day full of adventure. Luosto is a destination that will appeal to nature lovers and adventurers alike, offering a unique combination of Arctic wilderness and exciting outdoor activities. It is an ideal place to enjoy the peace and beauty of Lapland, away from the hustle and bustle of urban areas.

Luosto is a well-known tourist destination in Lapland, Finland, situated in the municipality of Sodankylä. It is celebrated for its stunning natural surroundings, winter activities, and the Pyhä-Luosto National Park. In January, daylight hours are very short due to the polar night, a phenomenon occurring in areas above the Arctic Circle, including Lapland. We set out early in the darkness on our journey to Luosto. In Lapland, the colors of the sky during sunrise and sunset can be very intense due to the low position of the sun on the horizon. The long twilight periods can produce unique colors in the sky, including green hues, due to various scattering effects of sunlight. Our adventure starts at the secluded hamlet of Ukko-Luostontien in Luosto. In Finland, traditional wooden houses are often referred to as "wooden cabins" or "wooden chalets." The Finnish word for a wooden house is puutalo. BieJee walks on the ridge of fjells Ukko-Luosto along the primeval forest in the area. The snow here resembles an untouched white carpet, with trees draped in a thick layer of powder snow. Every step disrupts the serene silence of the snowy surroundings; the crunching sound of fresh snow under my hiking boots fills the air. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow, and nature here in Luosto appears to be in a deep winter slumber. .

A beautiful New Year's day exploring and watching wildlife along the Burnt River Canyon

A beautiful winter day exploring and a little wildlife watching along the Burnt River Canyon between Durkee and Unity in Baker County Oregon .

The Burnt River Canyon near Durkee is always one of our favorite drives for taking in the majestic scenery of Eastern Oregon and watching wildlife along the way. Saw lots of wildlife this trip as colder temperatures have pushed lots of deer down into the canyon. We were excited to spot a few Bighorn Sheep this trip and a napping Barn Owl

Tybo, named for a word derived from the Shoshone, meaning “white man’s district, was was once a thriving mining town. In 1866 when a local Indian led white settlers to the site where he had discovered gold ore. The main lode discovered in 1871. The mine ultimately produced silver, lead and zinc. A smelter was built in 1872, but it would take several years before the town was officially established in 1874.

By 1877 the town had swelled to a population of about 1000. At one time, the town included five stores, a number of saloons, two blacksmith shops, a post office, a newspaper, a schoolhouse, a jail, whiskey shops, a literary society, and an International Order of Odd Fellows.

By 1879 the Tybo Consolidate Mining Company had started to fail when the quality of the ore dropped drastically . By 1880 town was practically dead and in 1884 a fire destroyed many of the remaining buildings.

The last production to come from Tybo between 1942 and 1945 when some old tailings were hauled out for treatment. A handful of people still live there and while much of the property is accessible to the public, portions of the area are privately owned.
