Exploring the back roads and a little birding as winter turns to spring in Baker County Oregon.
Spent the day watching the seasons change in Eastern Oregon, with big dramatic skies and snowcapped mountain peaks. While it’s a little early for spring migration, still spotted a few fun birds including lots of Red Tail Hawks, snow geese and tundra swans.

The province of Nan is located in the north of Thailand and borders Laos. It is one of the lesser known provinces of Thailand, but is known for its natural beauty, rich culture and ancient history. It's a great place to visit if you're looking for adventure and relaxation in nature. Road 1256 passes through the mountains of Nan and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding nature. Almost the most beautiful road in Thailand, the view on the side of the road is very beautiful, if you go during the rainy season, the atmosphere will be very good. You can see the green along the two sides of the road on the ridge. In some parts you can see the beautiful view of rice fields over the hills. It may be overgrown on some parts of the road. There are several interesting sights and activities to enjoy along the way. It's great for bird watching, camping, and hiking, and you're unlikely to meet many other people while exploring. You can also visit the Doi Phu Kha National Park, which is known for its beautiful waterfalls, lush forests and spectacular views. Wonderfully cool weather all year round. In addition, there are also several hill tribe villages along the way, where you have the chance to experience the local culture and traditions.
Somdet Phra Maha Muni Si Phu Kha Pagoda is a beautiful gem on top of a majestic mountain that lies at the beginning of the enchanting Doi Phu Kha National Park. This small pagoda is in an idyllic location with a beautiful view of the mountain peaks and a well-tended garden. At an altitude of no less than 1700 meters above sea level, the air is characterized by its freshness and clarity, resulting in a pleasant temperature of about 22 degrees Celsius. Staying in the mountains of Nan province offers travelers a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the peace and quiet of nature. It is also a great way to experience the local culture and the hospitality of the Thai people. The Burnt River Canyon near Durkee is always one of our favorite drives for taking in the majestic scenery of Eastern Oregon and watching wildlife along the way. Saw lots of wildlife this trip as colder temperatures have pushed lots of deer down into the canyon. We were excited to spot a few Bighorn Sheep in rut during this trip

Close to the village of Arsha in the Kazbegi region lies the Arsha Waterfall, about five kilometers from Stepantsminda Kazbegi. The hike to the waterfall is considered easy and typically takes three to four hours. The trail is unpaved but well-trodden, surrounded by lush meadows, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The waterfall is one of the lesser-known natural attractions in the area, contributing to its untouched and serene atmosphere. A bit further along is the Toti Waterfall, accessible via a steep trail that passes above the Arsha Waterfall. This waterfall offers spectacular panoramic views and is an ideal spot for a picnic. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility, the breathtaking nature, and even take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear water. The hike to Toti Waterfall leads through a rugged mountain landscape with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and deep valleys. The trail winds along steep slopes and rocky paths, surrounded by dry grasslands and scattered shrubs. Along the way, impressive cliffs and natural formations add a unique character to the scenery. The fresh mountain air and the tranquility of nature make the journey an unforgettable experience. At the end, the spectacular Toti Waterfall awaits as a rewarding sight after the challenging climb.
This photo shows a beautiful view on the way back from Toti waterfall to Arsha waterfall. The golden autumn colours of the trees contrast beautifully with the rugged, rocky slopes and the snow-capped mountains in the background. The sun illuminates the leaves, giving nature an almost magical look. Such landscapes make the walk between these waterfalls impressive not only because of the water, but also because of the surrounding nature and the ever-changing views. A truly picturesque moment in the mountains!
Nabij het dorp Arsha in de Kazbek regio, ligt de Arsha-waterval, op ongeveer vijf kilometer van Stepantsminda Kazbegi. De wandeling naar de waterval wordt als eenvoudig beschouwd en duurt doorgaans drie tot vier uur. Het pad is ongebaand maar goed begaanbaar, omringd door weelderige weiden en biedt prachtige uitzichten op de omliggende bergen. De waterval is een van de minder bekende natuurlijke attracties in het gebied, wat bijdraagt aan de ongerepte en serene sfeer. Nog iets verder ligt de Toti-waterval, bereikbaar via een steil pad dat bovenlangs de Arsha-waterval loopt. De wandeling naar de Toti-waterval voert door een ruig berglandschap met adembenemende uitzichten op besneeuwde bergtoppen en diepe valleien. Het pad slingert langs steile hellingen en rotsachtige paden, omringd door droge graslanden en verspreide struiken. Onderweg zijn er indrukwekkende kliffen en natuurlijke formaties die het landschap een uniek karakter geven. De frisse berglucht en de rust van de natuur maken de tocht een onvergetelijke ervaring. Aan het einde wacht de spectaculaire Toti-waterval als beloning voor de inspannende klim. Deze foto laat een prachtig uitzicht zien op de terugweg van de Toti-waterval naar de Arsha-waterval. De gouden herfstkleuren van de bomen contrasteren schitterend met de ruige, rotsachtige hellingen en de besneeuwde bergtoppen op de achtergrond. Sapan Waterfall is a beautiful waterfall surrounded by lush green mountains and lush natural landscapes. The waterfall is located deep in the mountains and is surrounded by lush tropical jungle, making for an enchanting landscape. To reach the waterfall, you must follow a path that winds through the lush jungle. It can be an adventurous journey, but the reward of reaching the waterfall is totally worth it. Along the way, enjoy the region's abundant flora and fauna, including exotic birds, reptiles, and wildlife. We encountered a Blue Crested Lizard on a tree in the undergrowth.
The Blue-Crested Lizard, also known as Calotes mystaceus, is a species of Dragon lizard that is found in province Nan of Thailand. As the name suggests, the Blue-Crested Lizard has a vibrant blue-colored crest on its head, which is more prominent in males. The rest of its body is usually green or brown, providing excellent camouflage among the vegetation. It has a slender and agile body, growing to an average length of around 30 to 40 centimeters, with the tail being longer than the body. These lizards are primarily arboreal, meaning they spend much of their time in trees and shrubs. They have strong limbs with sharp claws that enable them to climb and cling onto branches. They are also proficient jumpers and can swiftly move between trees. Blue-Crested Lizards are active during the day. They primarily feed on insects, such as crickets, grasshoppers, and beetles, but they may also consume small fruits and flowers. In Thailand, the Blue-Crested Lizard can be found in a variety of habitats, including forests, gardens, agricultural areas, and urban green spaces. It is a common and widely distributed species, often encountered by locals. Observing the vibrant blue crest and the agile movements of the Blue-Crested Lizard can be an exciting experience for nature enthusiasts and reptile lovers. However, it's important to remember that these lizards are wild animals, and it's best to admire them from a distance without disturbing their natural behavior.

This secluded path winds quietly through the dense wilderness of Gorumara Forest, its soil packed down by the silent, ancient footsteps of elephants. Towering sal and teak trees form a leafy canopy overhead, filtering the sunlight into shifting patches of silver and shadow. The air is thick with the scent of damp earth and wild grass, occasionally stirred by the calls of unseen birds or the distant rustle of movement deep within the undergrowth.
This is a path less travelled by humans—untamed, mysterious, and deeply alive. It holds the raw, unspoiled spirit of the forest, where every bend might reveal fresh tracks, and every silence hints at the presence of something watching. Following this trail is like stepping into a forgotten rhythm of nature, where elephants have walked for generations and the forest keeps its secrets close.

The David Gareja Monastery complex was founded in the 6th century by the monk David Garejeli. It consists of dozens of caves, churches, chapels, and hermit cells scattered across the sandstone hills along the border between Georgia and Azerbaijan. For centuries, the monastery served as a major center of faith, art, and learning. It is especially renowned for its distinctive rock-cut architecture and impressive medieval frescoes. A small cell is hewn from the soft sandstone, with a wooden door marked by a carved cross. The stonework around the entrance features arched brickwork that reflects Byzantine influence, typical of medieval Georgian religious architecture. On either side, the natural forms of the rock wall remain clearly visible — giving the impression that the structure has grown out of the mountain itself. A narrow staircase to the right leads to other parts of the monastery or additional cave cells. During our visit, we were the only visitors, allowing us to explore the entire complex in complete silence. From the monastery, you can enjoy breathtaking views over the vast, quiet semi-desert plains.

This very secluded location enhances the spiritual atmosphere of the site, which has served for centuries as a retreat for monks seeking to withdraw from the world. The monastery was founded in the 6th century by the Syrian monk David Garejeli and is partially carved into the soft sandstone cliffs. On the left side of the photo, you can see the dramatic, sloping rock wall with carved cells, chapels, and caves that once served as living and prayer quarters for the monks. Some of them are still adorned with delicate, centuries-old frescoes. On the right, the fortified walls and round watchtowers can be seen — silent witnesses to the monastery’s defensive function throughout history. In the center, a green, open courtyard connects nature and architecture in a harmonious way. Beyond its historical and architectural value, David Gareja is still a living religious site. Today, it is home to Georgian Orthodox monks who lead a modest, secluded life devoted to prayer, study, and the maintenance of the monastery. Luosto is a well-known tourist destination in Lapland, Finland, situated in the municipality of Sodankylä. It is celebrated for its stunning natural surroundings, winter activities, and the Pyhä-Luosto National Park. In January, daylight hours are very short due to the polar night, a phenomenon occurring in areas above the Arctic Circle, including Lapland. We set out early in the darkness on our journey to Luosto. Our plan is to climb its spectacular fjells (mountains) and explore its pristine wilderness. Our adventure starts at the secluded hamlet of Ukko-Luostontien in Luosto. In Finland, traditional wooden houses are often referred to as "wooden cabins" or "wooden chalets." The Finnish word for a wooden house is puutalo. The snow here resembles an untouched white carpet, with trees draped in a thick layer of powder snow. Every step disrupts the serene silence of the snowy surroundings; the crunching sound of fresh snow under my hiking boots fills the air. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow, and nature here in Luosto appears to be in a deep winter slumber.

Railay Beach is a paradise for rock climbers, and it did not disappoint! The towering limestone cliffs offer incredible climbs with breathtaking views. Visited in October empty mostly as it was still raining time, but the stunning scenery and turquoise waters made it worthwhile. A must-visit for adventure seekers!

Exploring the back roads and a little birding as winter turns to spring in Baker County Oregon.
Spent the day watching the seasons change in Eastern Oregon, with big dramatic skies and snowcapped mountain peaks. While it’s a little early for spring migration, still spotted a few fun birds including lots of Red Tail Hawks, snow geese and tundra swans.

From the high mountains of Gergeti, via Mtskheta, we arrived in the semi-desert landscape of Udabno — a world of vast emptiness and rolling hills. Udabno is located in eastern Georgia, near the border with Azerbaijan, and forms a fascinating contrast to the green, mountainous regions of the country. Here stretches a vast semi-desert landscape of colorful, rolling hills, dusty tracks, and endless horizons. The earth glows in shades of yellow, red, and brown, especially when the sun hangs low in the sky, and the silence is almost tangible. In this rugged environment, traditional shepherds still roam. With small flocks, they move across the open terrain on foot or horseback, searching for patches of grass. Sometimes they appear as tiny dots on the horizon, their loyal dogs at their sides. Their simple, hardy way of life has changed little over the centuries, giving the region an authentic, timeless feel. The combination of the striking landscape, the profound stillness, and the presence of the shepherds makes Udabno a truly unique place where time seems to stand still.

You can see the green along the two sides of the road on the ridge. In some parts you can see the beautiful view of rice fields over the hills. It may be overgrown on some parts of the road. There are several interesting sights and activities to enjoy along the way. It's great for bird watching, camping, and hiking, and you're unlikely to meet many other people while exploring. You can also visit the Doi Phu Kha National Park, which is known for its beautiful waterfalls, lush forests and spectacular views. Wonderfully cool weather all year round.
