Art on the streets of Ehrenfeld

The "Basilica di San Vitale" was erected on an octagonal plan from 526 on, when Ravenna was under the rule of the Ostrogoths, followers of the Arianism. It was completed and got consecrated in 547, when Ravenna was part of the Byzantine Empire.

The church combines Roman with Byzantine elements. It is most famous for its wealth of Byzantine mosaics, the largest and best preserved outside of Constantinople. It is one of the most important examples of early Christian Byzantine art and architecture in Europe.

The impact, that this church had on the Wesern European architecture, can hardly be overestimated. The Palatine Chapel in Aachen, commisioned by Charlemagne, has strong parallels to San Vitale.

Made entirely of 700-1000 year old oak beams, supported on eight stone pillars, this is the centre-piece of Ely Cathedral in the UK.

The challenge here was getting the settings right on my manual-focus wide-lens during a very short time-frame: to get into the right spot to get the symmetrical composition I needed special permission which was granted as long as I was very quick and very discreet.

Consequently this shot is nowhere near as sharp as I would have liked, but it is the scene as a whole that I'm trying to display.

The Frederick Clausing family came to America from Saxony in 1846 and settled in what was then Washington County, Wisconsin. Grandsons Ernst and Theodore built one round and ten octagon barns in the area. This barn was built in 1897 for Henry Kiekhaefer at a cost of about $1000. Henry's grandson Elmer Carl Kiekhaefer grew up on this farm and became founder of Mercury Marine which started in nearby Cedarburg. The farm was named "Lake View Farm" due to its proximity to Lake Michigan and situated at the southwest corner of Highland Road and Lake Shore Drive east of present day I-43 in Mequon, Wisconsin.

When the Sisters of Notre Dame purchased the property they stated they had no interest in preserving the farm buildings. The barn collapsed and was dismantled sometime after 1983. The farmhouse was taken down around 2004 when Concordia University expanded and developed the bluff restoration project.

Captured on film early in 1978.

Octagonal boxes from squares.

You can't go wrong with tato-boxes, always a pleasure to fold.

Once a look-out tower, now an outdoor cafe, this edifice stands on the site of an earlier building, a camera obscura,- a popular late 19th century attraction on Plymouth's Hoe.

Well maintained octagon barn will see many more Wisconsin winters.

An octagonal toroid, for which I still haven't found a construction method. It's out there, I daresay.

Another design of mine with octahedral symmetry. This is a fairly simple model so it may have been developed by others independently.

Casa Octogonal

Driving from Appalachia to the Columbus airport, we took a short detour to view an 1800's house, moved to this site for future restoration in Circleville Ohio

Since my external hard drive crashed this summer AND 4-5 years of photos with it, I'm trying to salvage edited photos that were saved elsewhere. Came across the Crites house in Circleville taken in 2011 that begged for an uplift. Below is the dark 3 photo merged copy. Also included a more saturated version of the painterly version. Now back to work on saving, deleting, and cleaning up my computer.

Paper: Octagon

Model: Martin Quinn

Learned that at CDO 2017. As you can see

on Ilse's stream Martin brought his kilt all the way to Italy and we enjoyed both his model and his outfit ☺

And I got a small light box with LEDs for Christmas which works way better than my old self made one 😊

Perfect house for entitled kids to grow up in. Like a round house, can't be made to stand in the corner. Hudson,WI. Tours available. Similar structure in Hastings,MN.

View of the lantern room.

Built in 1864 but inactive for many years. The stone tower is 52 feet high and sits on a stone base which in turn sits on the wall of a stone fortress. The lower 2/3 of the tower is octagonal and the upper 1/3 is round.

Located at the end of a breakwater on the north side of the old inner harbor which is used now for small boat dockage.

Octagonal twist from 2 squares

Happy Fenced Friday! One of my favorite old silos around these parts. It's off the beaten path a bit and I discovered it by chance a few years back when exploring the area. So every time I find myself in the area, I have to stop by for some photos; this time it was in Autumn mode. In Johnson County, KS.

From an octagon of Tant paper.

An attempt to turn a modified version of the Keller twist into a flower-tower recursive thingy.

A dead end, actually, the second twist is different, no opportunity to get a third one.

Ok, so there might be easier ways of constructing this tangle pattern, but I was playing with octagons and this is what resulted. Looking at it gives me a headache after a while...

Another round with the flat polygon crosses.

Here an octagon cross with a starish center.

It is similar to the center of the Octarhombi Cologne Star or the Triangle Star.

I have free arms, so it is ready for a quilt. Let's see.
