We found the worst aspects of the Black Sea to be due to these many river inflows. A steady array of logs swept into the sea added to navigation problems - and the inflow of nutrients gave a huge population of jelly fish almost where ever we went.

The Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria) is a butterfly found in and on the borders of woodland throughout much of the Palearctic ecozone. In North Europe, Central Europe, Asia Minor, Syria, Russia and Central Asia where subspecies P. a. tircis occurs it is brown with pale yellow or cream spots and darker upperwing eyespots. In southwestern Europe and North Africa the subspecies P. a. aegeria has a colour which is more orange in the background; the hindwing underside eyespots are reddish brown rather than black or dark gray. The two forms gradually intergrade into each other. The speckled wood also occurs on the Atlantic island of Madeira. Molecular studies suggest that the African and Madeiran populations are closely related and distinct from European populations of both subspecies, suggesting that Madeira was colonized from Africa and that the African population has a long history of isolation from European populations.
Females have brighter and more distinct markings than males. The wingspan of both males and females is 4–4.5 cm, although males tend to be slightly smaller than females. Males are highly territorial and will defend their territory against intruding males. Two basic strategies exist for finding females: some males will vigorously defend a perch and the immediate surroundings, waiting for females to pass by; others will patrol a larger territory.
Males have either 3 or 4 upper hindwing eyespots; the fourth spot shows only in flight. It appears that the 4-spotted morph tends towards patrolling behaviour to finds mates. This agrees with the probable function of the eyespots to entice predators like birds to aim for the wing margin (which may be damaged without much affecting the butterfly) rather than the body. On the other hand, habitat is apparently a major factor influencing mate-finding strategy as perching behavior is more common in males of conifer woodland, whereas males of meadows tend towards patrolling behavior.
The caterpillar is green with a short, forked tail and feeds on various species of grass, especially couch grass. The chrysalis (pupa) is green or dark brown. The species is unique in its ability to overwinter in two totally separated developmental stages, as pupae or as half-grown larvae. This leads to a complicated pattern of several adult flights per year.

January 5, 2023: I’m continuing with exploring the #prompts raised in @rachelastorauthor’s @dailyom course, WRITING TO UNCOVER THE AUTHENTIC SELF, and today I’m going to consider the following: “Are #obstacles really just #fears holding you back?” & “What is the longest-running obstacle in your #life?”
For me, my obstacles are definitely buried in #fears that are intertwined with the #roots of #depression that stem out from the souls of my feet into the mud of the #earth below. My depression is linked to fears that I’m #unworthy, not good enough, not wanted. A pretender. An imposter. That I’ll always be #abandoned by others for something or someone better in life. Like Amanda left me. And Sheri, Lisa, Sheila, & Christie left. And Jessie too, for the man she would marry. It’s also linked to fears that I’ll never look good enough, that I’m sexually unattractive. Boring. That I’ll never be enough, & that I’ll never have enough. Ultimately, my #anxiety & depression are the longest-running obstacles in my life. For as long as I can remember, I’ve lived life trapped in some kind of #haze. It’s like this all comsadness that has draped a veil over my line of sight for decades now.
Today’s #selfie was taken as a part of the @photographycoursenet offering, SELF PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY ON A BUDGET as taught by Taya Iv. The section I’m playing with involves intuitively using ISO and Shutter Speed in manual mode while taking #selfportraits. Here, I #photographed myself under an LED light by @westandarrowco which was actually broken when I opened it.

And of course, there will be the various Costume Contests so get creative! AshKicker offers a little something for everyone!
Get a front row seat to all the action by camping right on site! It is held at the beautiful Toutle River RV Resort just north of Castle Rock, WA. Their gorgeous grounds, heated pool, cedar saunas, and too many other amenities to list, will give you a place to prepare before the race, as well as a relaxing place to recover after the grueling race. www.ashkicker.org/
Lance Cpl. Adam I. Kelly, Billy and I ran in the 2011 Warrior Dash running race and Obstacle Course on Saturday, October 1st, 2011. The race was held at Berkeley Plantation in Charles City, VA. and was "3.56 hellish miles" with the following obstacles:
Barricade Breakdown - Hurdle over the barricades and crawl under barbed wire.
Rubber Ricochet - Ram your way through the rubber jungle of tires.
Road Rage - Stampede through the scrap yard of rusted wreckage.
Chaotic Crossover - Crawl across tangled nets.
Deadweight Drifter - Trudge through chest to overhead deep water and over logs.
Teetering Traverse - Level your nerves as you teeter through a soaring track.
Deadman's Drop - Climb to the top and over the unhandy hurdle.
Great Warrior Wall - Conquer the wooden barricade.
Rio Run - Dash down the river.
Warrior Roast - Leap over the Warrior fire pits.
Cargo Climb - Maneuver over the cargo nets.
Muddy Mayhem - Scramble beneath barbed wire in a pit of mud as you near the finish.
We had a blast doing it together and created some awesome memories!
The Sable river makes its way over the falls and through the boulders and felled trees on the way to Lake Superior about a ¼ mile from here.

Lancaster County 4-H is one of the only county 4-H programs with a county fair llama/alpaca show. The 4-H Llama/Alpaca Show at the Lancaster County Super Fair includes Showmanship, Obstacle Course and Pack Class. All exhibitors are expected to care for their llamas and alpacas (feed and water) and cooperate in keeping pens and alleys clean, neat and attractive.
