The AshKicker is a demanding 5k adventure run/EVENT,with extreme obstacles through rugged, ash laden terrain. The numerous insane obstacles will cause you to push yourself to your physical and mental limits! Compete individually or call out your friends and gather a team. AshKicker is an amazing way for your team, group, or company to gain team building skills as you help each other make your way to the finish line. Nothing will bond your team together like mud, sweat, and adrenaline!
AshKicker is definitely an event. It has a beer garden that starts at 10am. Live music, raffles and games that continue throughout the day, as well as activities for the kids! And of course, there will be the various Costume Contests so get creative! AshKicker offers a little something for everyone!
Get a front row seat to all the action by camping right on site! It is held at the beautiful Toutle River RV Resort just north of Castle Rock, WA. Their gorgeous grounds, heated pool, cedar saunas, and too many other amenities to list, will give you a place to prepare before the race, as well as a relaxing place to recover after the grueling race. www.ashkicker.org/

This is one of a selection of the photographs that I took to illustrate my book “Cycling Manchester to The Malverns,” and this group show scenes from the alternative route between Marple and Birmingham via High Peak and Derby. Some of the photographs posted here appear in the book, others don’t, and there are quite a few in the book that are not posted here.
At Tutnall Wharf you need to make a choice, because just in front of you is Tardebigge tunnel that takes the canal to the top of the Tardebigge lock flight. There is no towpath through the tunnel but as usual there is a footpath over the top, and you will find it at the end of the road that is more or less in front of you, slightly to the left and over the bridge. The path will be in front of you at the T-junction you come to but, as you will see when you get there, this section is not currently suitable for cycling and you will need to take the on-road diversion unless you are walking the route.
In brief, very restrictive gates have been put up at both ends of the footpath section. The one at the northern end is the more user-friendly of the two – at least a pedestrian can get through the restrictive gate. But compared to the one at the other end, this is nothing!
It’s difficult to describe the southern one in simple words so I took a photograph of it. Basically there are bits of wood here, there and everywhere, and with what reminds me of a catch pit in the middle. I’m almost surprised that there isn’t a nest of vipers in there. It doesn’t even look like it’s supposed to be a stile – if you didn’t know about such things and you came across a contraption such as this, you would be forgiven for thinking that it was a sheep pen or something, and certainly not a public right of way. You would have to be a really dedicated, determined or just plain bloody minded cyclist to get your bike through this lot. Come to that, you have to be a pretty determined and agile pedestrian to use it as well.
On a more serious note, this is supposed to be a footpath. And a footpath is a public right of way on foot. And a public right of way on foot is something that should not be obstructed by the owner of the land. In my opinion, this contraption is not really following the spirit of the law. I did bring the matter to the attention of the local Public Rights of Way Officer when I was up there taking photographs, and sent a few to the Council to illustrate the situation. They never came back to me so it might be the case that there is an easier to negotiate stile at Tardebigge when you go there, or of course there may not be.
However, if once you have negotiated this little obstacle course you think the fun is over, think again. Once past “the contraption” the footpath leads steeply down a set of concrete steps. And then, in front of you, is the dual carriageway A448 on its way from Bromsgrove to Redditch. The national speed limit applies to this road, which as a dual carriageway means 70mph for most vehicles, which also means that a fair number of them will be hammering towards you at 80-plus. Nevertheless, across this road is the way the route takes you, so take your life in your hands and set off. It’s better to run, but try not to trip up on the way... There is a refuge in the middle so the cars can have two separate goes at bowling you over…
